I'm curious as to what everyone else prefers to carry into the Wilderness, when it comes to choosing a Swiss Army Knife model. Tell us about your favorite Victorinox or Wenger, and what you like best about it.

Mine is the Vic Huntsman. Has all the tools I'd ever need in the Wilderness, in a compact package. Makes an excellent companion to a larger fixed-blade knife.

I think its a fireman, I got it from marlboro, years ago, its large with a locking blade, Saw serrated blade, And a few other handy tools. THe corkscrew is useless but what can you do.

I like the german army issue both the current and previous issue.

Gotta say that I like a whole bunch.

Vic Trekker, Fireman

Wenger Ranger 57, Ranger 61

Unfortunately, niether Wenger nor Victorinox makes one that has everything I'm looking for.

I have to say it's the classic :)

I like my climber, I plan to get a one-hand trekker, but the classic will always be on my keyring.

About this: could someone explain me why the climber have a corkscrew but no saw?!?

Victorinox German Bundeswehr issue field utility knife. Same as the Vic OH Trekker, but with different handle scales, as well as, no pick and tweezers.

Not to be a conspiracy theorist, but maybe their marketing department has a strategy to make you want to own more than one sak?

If you could pick & choose to order, then they would just pretty much be in the warranty business after you design your SAK

Mine is the Vic fieldmaster ( I think this is a relatively new one) it is currently now part of my edc It has all the usefull gadgets of the huntsman saw, scissors, etc. with the addition of a phillipshead screwdriver

My Wenger Mountaineer doesn't qualify as a true SAK, so I guess I have to go with the old classic Champion, not Champ, Champion.

Doc knows, I think he has one, also.

Alox Farmer. The best all-around SAK for my needs, both outdoors and in.

Vic Classic gets an honorable mention. I keep one on my keys and stash them various places. Incredibly useful little knives.

More votes for the Farmer, Classic, and OHT. The Cadet and Solo have become my workday companions (office business attire).

I have a few different models including the Swiss champ but this is the only one I always have in my PSK !

SAK's are probably the most collectable knives around. I have a couple Classics, a Camper, and a Trekker. I'm always looking for them at garage sales and flea markets. There's a Classic on my keyring that gets regular use-- $3 at a flea market with some Honeywell marketing stuff on it.

I first learned about SAK quality by reading a self-defense article writen by Jim Grover (A.K.A. - Kelly McCann). He talked about carrying a SAK Climber for utility cutting chores. I went to a local Army & Navy Surplus store that sold various SAKs. I took a look at the Climber, but wanted one with a saw blade. The clerk handed me the Vic Huntsman.

If you want a Climber with a saw blade, get a Huntsman.

I read somewhere on this forum about how to disassemble your SAK and with some help from other SAK's put together a custom model with the desired functions. You would have to do a search to find the thread. My favorite SAK it the Swiss Champ.

Cheers

Monocrom, I'm not sure this is actually in answer to your question, but this Wenger (3.1 oz) has been in my pocket the last few weeks, so it gets the nod for the moment. Similar to your Victorinox Huntsman (3.4 oz), but smaller being 85mm. It has a fingernail file instead of a small blade, and the scissors in the Wenger have serrations. The awl is not as nice, and no hook. I do like the locking blade! :) It is extremely sharp from my charged leather strop and seems to stay that well reasonably well. This is probably in part because the blade is relatively thin. I don't know if it is "THE" SAK, but it would serve, especially if combined with a modest fixed blade.
