Your favorite SAK.

Outdoors: Vic One Hand Trekker

At home: Vic Sportsman

At work: Vic Pioneer

My Wenger Mountaineer doesn't qualify as a true SAK, so I guess I have to go with the old classic Champion, not Champ, Champion.

Doc knows, I think he has one, also.

I do have one (a gift from my lovely daughter), although I thought it was the Champ (not Champion). Mine came as part of the SOS survival kit - different sheath, w/compass, little ruler, little sharpening stone, small amount of cordage, couple of bandages, small mechanical pencil, small signal mirror, couple of needles and thread, little bit of note paper. I think that was it.

For the longest time, I didn't carry it in the woods - I thought it was too heavy, but doing a comparison, it is lighter than a lot of multitools. I started to carry it and I really like it. The only 3 things I find superfluous are the Phillips screwdriver, the corkscrew (how do you use that to open a beer? ) and the scaler (although it does have a ruler on it). I posted earlier, using the magnifying glass to start a fire. I now carry it when canoeing, etc.

For EDC, Vic Ranger.

At the moment, my favorites are the Victorinox Pioneer and Executive. I carry the Executive every day, but I use both of them everyday for various chores. For many years, I also carried Classics, and still have 'em all and carry one on occasion as well. I have so many, but those are the ones that see the most use. The Pioneer has taken over from the Tinker. I found the Tinker had some things I hardly had use for; I use every feature on the Pioneer, Executive, and Classic.

I will eventually get a OHT as well.

mine would have to be the huntsman even though i have the stayglow version :( but at 20 bucks cheeper who cares

About this: could someone explain me why the climber have a corkscrew but no saw?!?

I think the reason both the Climber and the Mountaineer have no saw, is because there are no trees once you have climbed the mountain high enough :D ;) .

I guess the corkscrew is more of a European thing. You reach a Base camp or the top of the mountain, out comes the wine! :D

Fireman here. 2 large blades for redundancy and a large saw, the only model with this exact combo;) as far as I know.

Skam

Classic - always have one on me wherever I am.
Rucksack - - outdoors carry all the time knife. Locking blade, saw, and awl are nice on this one.
Swiss Officer - - nice combination of a couple blades, can & bottle opener, tweesors,& tooth pick - in a fairly compact package that compliments the Classic nicely

Vic Camper or Bundeswehr Mauser Pattern. (outdoors)

EDC: Spartan or Wenger Standard Issue.

My favorite SAK is my Rucksack, with the OH Trekker coming in a close second.

Quick Question, off topic: My Rucksack has been my EDC for years. I have often considered picking up a OH Trekker. As someone who has both would you mind posting a brief pro/con comparison. Thanks for any insight you can provide.

I like my picknicker, but no one hand opening so Im gonna beat the snot out of it and replace it with a trekker. Some more favorites are my recruit and classic. I edc them on my keychain, and theyre always together so I consider my keychain to be one big multitool :)

Hi Eyegor:

Postives for the OH Trekker are that it has the one hand opening feature, a liner lock that is a bit easier to use for closing the locked blade, and a serrated/plain edge combo that makes more sense to me than other serrated blades with the serrations close to the ricasso. The main blade comes out of the center layer, making it feel a little better when really bearing down while cutting.

Negatives are that the plain portion of the blade edge is asymetrically ground and I find it sometimes inconvenient when whittling. The black scales make the knife easier to lose if you put it down in poor light. It is heavier and slightly bulkier. It has a phillips screwdriver in place of the corkscrew - and I like my wine :)

All nitpicks aside, both are excellent knives.

Thanks for the reply. I actually prefer the slide lock 111mm over the liner locks. Doesn't rule it out, just personal preference. How is the thumbhole in the hand when using the other tools? Is it uncomfortable or obtrusive? No more hijacking, I promise.:)

Doc, I agree about the fishscaler, of course, in a survival situation when I catch a fish, I might change my mind. :) What blade would serve better? I'd maybe like to see it be a full serrated blade?

For wilderness, I would like the corkscrew to be an auger style drill bit. Having a drill bit that could drill holes big enough for a piece of 550 cord would be very nice.

If we have any gear that has phillips heads, then the phillips bit might be nice, otherwise, I'd like to see it be filed down to a sharp pointed poker.

The Champion was the predecessor to the Champ.
Champ has pliers, Champion does not.

Right here has some comparisons of models:
