Your favorite SAK.

When I was around twelve or thirteen, there was a cutlery place on Pike Street in Seattle that claimed to be the only authorized "assembler" of Victorinox in North America. These guys would build you a SAK from Victorinox parts that had the blades that you wanted. One thing that I remember is that they had a zippo-type lighter arrangement that replaced one of the handle scales as an option. Last time I was back there, the place was no longer there. Does anybody else from the area remember this place or did I just get some bad acid around that time in my life or something? I always thought the lighter was a neat idea but haven't seen anything like it since.

I've had the same SwissChamp for something like fifteen years and it's still going strong. My son used the woodsaw on it just yesterday to cut partway through a fallen log that was blocking a trail.

My in-laws (non tool users) used to bother me about always carrying a knife. They haven't questioned it since I used the corkscrew to open a bottle of wine for them although they still refer to any sheath knife I carry as my "shiv".

Trailmaster: I prefer the traditional nail nick over the one-handed models. The main blade on the one-handed models always seems to have excess play -- I suppose to make it work one-handed it has to be loose. The traditional Trailmaster has no serrations, which I think is even better than thoughtfully-placed serrations.

Farmer: The best compromise of tools in that size alox model, plus a lanyard loop. I think that's pretty important in a survival tool. A just wish the lanyard tab was on the other side of the handle. As it is now, it digs into my heel when I'm using the main blade.

Alox Farmer. The best all-around SAK for my needs, both outdoors and in.

Another vote for the Alox Farmer - got one for Christmas and I carry it every day now.

For me, it's a Vic Farmer. I, too, got mine for Christmas. It replaced a Vic Rucksack. (Although the Rucksack still has it's place.)

Great knife but dont break that single blade ;) :).

I like the Outrider. It has pretty much the same tools as a Huntsman, but bigger and with a locking knife blade. The Outrider is my working SAK now that I've retired my 24 year old Huntsman (until my daughter is old enough to have it).

Vic's fieldmaster is the perfect sak imho. It is my outdoor/out side of work carry, sometimes it also goes to work. I am also fond of my Wenger backpacker.

I have alot of favorites;) But I have carried a hiker for a long time and it's been used and abused but keeps coming back for more.

I also give the farmer and fieldmaster a vote for being about perfect.:)

As far as the larger models I preffer the liner lock and am happy with the standard trekker.I also have a rucksack which is great, but I like the extra heft of the liner lock models.

The tinker seems to have all that I need in a pocket knife. Besides two very sharp blades, the screw drivers both large and small slotted plus a phillips, and the can and the bottle openers and finally the awl. Useful tools all and in one small and useful package.
I have re-shaped the smaller sharper blade to provide a excellent craft tool. There is not much that the larger blade can not cut. You add to that the Victorinox guarantee and there is not much more you need.

Though I'm frustrated with the inability to get the exact tool lineup I would like, I cant help but marvel at their quality per dollar. Vic in particular IMHO. How do they do it?

Though I carry a LM wave, my heart is with the several Vic SAKs I have.

If only Vic would make a Spirit S with OH high-carbon blades...I swear I'd pay $200 for it.

When hiking I like the Vic Hiker. While in town I like the Deluxe Tinker. The reason I prefer those two models is that they have the tools that I consider necessary for those environments, without unneeded extras.

I carry a Handyman, which to me is great but a bit heavy. The Ranger (which is identical to the Handyman, but it doesn't have those small and a bit useless pliers) is probably the one I like the most.

I guess the corkscrew is more of a European thing. You reach a Base camp or the top of the mountain, out comes the wine! :D

I can confirm that. :D

For a small sized SAK it is about perfect agreed.;)

Mine is the Vic Huntsman. Has all the tools I'd ever need in the Wilderness, in a compact package. Makes an excellent companion to a larger fixed-blade knife.

I wholeheartedly agree on the Huntsman. Its my favorite, and I've got 7 or so stashed around. I do have one complaint. I'd love a set of pliars on my Huntsman. So I tried a layer mod, guided by the guys at KF. Disaster. Then a guy there volunteered to mod one for me. So I now have a modded huntsman with an added set of pliars.

A lot of good models listed, but I wanted to mention another one - the Hunter. It is a larger (111mm) model with locking main blade, small serrated gutting blade, woodsaw, combo tool, corkscrew and awl. For me, too big for every day carry, but nice oudoors knife.

I have a Huntsman that my brother bought me years ago. It is about perfect for my hand and it has served me well.

I think, though, for the features, I would trade it for a Deluxe Tinker.

If I could get a saw added to that - it woudl REALLY be perfect.

Well - unless I could fold out a Carmen Electra. THEN it would be perfect. ;)
