Within the larger total collection, sometimes themes emerge. It might be your group of titanium knives, dive knives, or scandi knives. Or it could even be a seemingly incoherent mess in the eyes of others but a sort of alluring chaos can be seen through the perspective of the owner. Do you have a favorite sub-collection in your arsenal?

My "theme" is variety, especially colors. Black plastic is boring. I have wood, cf, titanium, circuit board, aluminum, etc. Everything has to be different from another, which is why many are customized.

My three most carried knives share no theme...unless being liked enough to claim EDC status is a theme. Sometimes, I choose my carry knives based on color or handle material, sometimes size; but usually it's just what I want to carry on any given day, or for the particular tasks at hand.

Dual action side opening autos are definitely my thing, weird locks and mechanisms would be the secondary. Beyond that, I have no rhyme or reason🤣

Folding stilettos. It's something that goes back to my childhood.

Plastic handled users, mostly Spyderco Salt models with serrated blades, and a Hogue Ritter RSK
Ti & CF folders for urban EDC (CRK, Buck, Spyderco, Böker)
Fixed blades and folders with wooden and burl scales (Bark River and rescaled Spydercos)
SAKs (Victorinox)
Machetes, mostly parangs (Condor)
Traditionals (mixed bag)

Abandoned/aborted sub-collections: black tactical stuff (I still like the camo/DLC Military though) and made in China affordables (Ruike, Steel Will)

It is hard to pick a favorite group. I always liked titanium frame-locks the most, but I can't work/live (at least properly ) without my plastic beaters and the SAKs. And without the organic beauty of the burl and wooden group, my collection feels too austere and bleak.

In theory, I could keep a couple of pieces from each group and be happy, but realistically I think the Ti & CF collection will slowly keep growing, and the knives in all the other groups will be just replaced if lost or damaged.

Small to medium fixed blades for me. I carry one daily in my pocket. I have one in pretty much every room of the house, in all the vehicles, in all the backpacks and suitcases, and have given numerous out to my family and friends. I still carry and use folders daily, but I would be just fine without them.

I have kind of recently changed up my theme a bit. Now I’m buying to fit my edc carry group. So what I mean is I buy a blue handled knife, a blue flashlight, a blue pen and a blue pocket tool. Carry them all at same time. I’m doing the colors of the rainbow. So far have 4 colors down and maybe 4 or 5 to go. Some things are hard to get in certain colors and expensive I’m finding.

One of the fun thing about collecting anything is finding the creative stories that lie within your collection. Whether you physically set up a presentation or just do it as a mental exercise, those stories just keep on coming. Perhaps it is whimsical; your knives for the zombie apocalyps; or the knives owned by your grandfather; or knives made during a particular period, for a specific purpose or by a certain group. The same physical item can be rolled into any number of collections or just as easily edited out. I enjoy history and the wide diversity of knives across the many cultures: but each of us can enjoy their things however they please.

My Olamics seem to be my dominating venue lately. I enjoy the creative process of making each one unique.
