Your favorite sub-collections or themes

I don’t have a ton of knives and when I find something that really works I tend to stick with it. So as odd as this is, my favorite sub collection would be my four CRK small Sebenzas. I say odd because I only have five folders I consider keepers.

Great choice!

More of a category, but knives that look like they good be from old frontier days, then there are small fixed blades, and finally some spear point knives mostly in folders.

Military knives are all fun to collect. I focus on USN knives.

For a while I had a goal of having at least one good representation of every production knife brand, until I began to realize just how many knife brands there were and how much some of them cost. I still sort of do that, but I'm more realistic about it not being a feasible thing to accomplish in the short term.

I also occasionally go for a dive into a brand that can sometimes get out of hand: Benchmade (12), Cold Steel (10), Joker (13), and Morakniv (23). I've managed to keep myself in check from buying every Spyderco in sight (just 7 so far), no matter how many of them I'd like to have, because they're the potato chips of knife collecting when it comes to how many models, steels, and colours they come in; let alone limited edition releases.

I also collect a lot of knives because of who designed them (Ernest Emerson, Rick Hinderer, Andrew Demko, Ethen Becker, Mel Pardue, Ken Onion, Jasper Voxnaes, Alan Folts, Joe Flowers, Shane Sibert, DH Russell, Jose Sabater, and others) and like to have representations of different steels.

I'm currently focused on adding to my fixed blade collection, preferably from brands, steels, and types I don't already have representations of, while keeping an eye out for sales of certain Zero Tolerance models and knives designed by some of my favourite creators.

I also tend to avoid black plastic handles if there's another option.

One of the fun thing about collecting anything is finding the creative stories that lie within your collection. Whether you physically set up a presentation or just do it as a mental exercise, those stories just keep on coming. Perhaps it is whimsical; your knives for the zombie apocalyps; or the knives owned by your grandfather; or knives made during a particular period, for a specific purpose or by a certain group. The same physical item can be rolled into any number of collections or just as easily edited out. I enjoy history and the wide diversity of knives across the many cultures: but each of us can enjoy their things however they please.

Yes indeed. The overlaps and interconnecting themes add to the fun. Great insight.

I’m a sucker for a good fixed blade belt knife to walk around with in the woods. The most overrepresented theme in my collection are fixed blade between 3 1/2”and 4 1/2”.

Within that category, tool steels with micarta scales comfortably hold the lead as my most represented material combo, with overmolded handles taking the second spot.

Cocobolo series Queen cutlery D2 lineup and 1095 steel African Blackwood and ebony GEC lockbacks. Both are getting rare and too expensive to add to the collection so what I have is likely all I'll ever have. Spyderco Enduras in all different steel versions. I was getting all the mules until maybe the last 3 when they got too difficult for me to get.

My theme? I cut stuff that needs cutting.

I use several different types, designs, colors and sizes of knives at different times depending on what I’m doing. I never really thought about having a theme cause a theme gets in my way of what I’m trying to accomplish lol.

They all look a feel the same in the dark. Lol

Mine theme... sharp and to the point.
All can easily slit my fingers when careless.

I got a bunch of Buck 112's with finger grooves a while back. Not sure why, but I'd just get another one if I didn't see anything else I was interested in. It wasn't very exciting when I got a new package though. I guess I could say I collect Case trappers too. Nothing to crazy...

Really no rhyme or reason for my collection!!! Although green canvas micarta does seem to rule my brain.

Currently, have the reverse-S theme, which I am adding to... trying to get them all, plainedge, Spyderedge... almost bought an $800 dollar pimped out Civilian, still might...
Also, the Janich-liffe, but I only have two of those. 4+ inch folders. General Spyderco defensive knives, I like those. Purple is something that I'm going to be getting more into. PM2s.. I have five PM2s. Old-school Spyderco. Old-school (designed 100+ years ago) folders such as Opinel, Douk-Douk, Higonokami, Mercator (or any Otter-Messer knife!). I have multiple styles of those and want more, want all of them, actually.
