Your favorite sub-collections or themes

Variety because every job needs the right tool.

Bronze washers on a folder, though the ZT 308 still makes a strong case for bearings.

Smaller fixed blades.

I don’t really have a theme as I don’t consider my knives a collection. To me they’re tools to be used and enjoyed not something to sit on a shelf.

I suppose I could group a few due to brand but that’s about it. I have a few Busse/kin.

I think you got one of those, the one with the metal boosters. Yours is just the larger size, I’d be looking for a smaller model.
‘I think this is it:

Oh! I call that the "fancy" one, not the "custom" one. Yeah, we were on different dialects on that one. I do have both the fancy/custom and the regular Espada XL, but I want to actually customize it by engraving white patterns on the aluminum. Someone on the forum showed me that, it was gorgeous and spruced up the plain aluminum greatly...
Or, or... anodization. I know nothing about how to anodize and therefore I have no idea if you could anodize just the alum purple and engrave patterns on it while the knife is still together. If I can, however, I will pay someone to do that. Will also pay someone to tune up my custom scale PM2s. I love them, but there is just a LIIIIITLE blade play, and the action is not as good.

Imagine a purple engraved alum Espada XL, my man.

Say you are buying five knives for specific purposes, kitchen, hard cutting, SD, serrated and rustproof. And you are like "Okay, I want these knives for their purpose specifically, I would not buy them if I would not use them".
But say your favorite color is purple, and you can get all of them in purple G-10. Would you not rather have that, than red, green and black?

No.

I went through a "try to buy all the colors phase". I tried doing that with the Rat 1 D2, Delicas, and Enduras and realized I don't have enough disposable income for that in addition to the firearm/ammo want to buy list. So I stopped.

No themes for me anymore.
I don't get this, I get buying different steels. I have six PM2s in S45VN, Cruwear, Rex 45, BD1N and Maxamet, and I enjoy being able to maintain and use the steel on the same platform. I could not buy six S30V PM2s in titanium blurple, micarta, copper, aluminum and grey G-10.
This seems illogical to me, but no disrespect intended when I guess your reasons for a staunch "No." It is either you 1.) Prefer different colors and materials for your scales, like I do, I like blurple Ti the most, but I still love my copper, alum, and G-10 in the same knife, would not make them all purple even if I could. or 2.) You specifically do not want your favorite on a scale or steel, over and over?

Is the reason 1, 2, or do you have a different reason? I am sorry, I am just curious as to why you would not, if you had the choice, make your knives with your favorite material or color or shape. Why is that? Wanting to try the company's factory knife?

I understand not wanting to care about a vain collection, but the situation here is if you COULD have everything the way you want, that works the way you want. You do not want that - why?

If money was no object I still wouldn’t have everything in the same colors/materials. Since it is, I take what I can get in the exact knife I want. Sometimes it’s like a Model T (any color you want, as long as it’s black). I think a No-e would look great with a mirror polished blade and jade G10 scales, but guess what they had…

Bottom line is I don’t care much about colors as long as I can get the knife I want in the materials I want for the price I want to pay. That equates to a very eclectic assemblage of knives I use for different purposes. Not something I would consider a collection.

That was my hypothetical, that money was no object. Okay, makes tons more sense now.

Yeah, we agree way more than not. Sometimes, what you'd love is just not there. I want a purple carbon fiber, waved, retention ringed Civilian, but it ain't gonna happen, unfortunately.

Like, I would buy many PM2s because I use the model a lot and different steels for different purposes, not just "Collect 'em all!" mentality. For knives like the Douk-Douk, Opinel, Mercator, i do kind of have a "collect 'em all" mentality because those are very historical knives with different variations for not a lot of money.

But yeah, same here, I want the knife to work the way I wanted it to, first and foremost. Though, I consider it a collection even if you are not hand-picking pieces based on aesthetic. 😁

Love your Kraton-handled original one! Ooh, and that plain-edge Matriarch is nice, too! Some people think these look silly, but I love them and think they can be workhorses, too! I really want a Dodo, and I cannot wait for the Civvie 2, I hope they wave the sucker and put it on a comp-lock, lack of wave is the one thing preventing me from carrying the Civvie like I do the Matriarch (that, and my model is an ATS-55 like yours, kind of "antique", hah). I see that mine is a slightly earlier version, though, because my backlock has no Boye dent. Do you have liners in your Civvie or no?

I put a wave on my Lil Matriarch, about to put a signet ring on it! I want a plain-edge Cricket, too. I have been looking at a fancy $800 Civvie with mother of pearl inlays and dual serrations (filework) on the back, that is my dream Civvie, that or the dual-bladed one. You know, as an actual specialized defensive tool, though, I wonder how a knife like the Lil Matriarch specifically, would carry, if you sharpened the other side of the blade, just to where the hollow grind ends, like a traditional karambit. It'd not be something you want in your pockets all the time! Just as an exercise, though.
One liner (clip side) on my Civilian. Personally I don't like serrated havkbills. I have serrated CF Harpy and serrated version of that Matriarch too, but they aren't "speak to my heart" ☺️
And about rings - my Maxace Red Queen came with ring accessory which allows conversion to kerambit.

Got it… I’m not huge on purple, more of a “black“ kind of guy but I agree, it might look nice in purple. That Espada has very attractive, sexy forms. The picture I used is from a site where this particular model is available, $300, not bad Inthink. Maybe they can customize it for you ? Honestly, when we get to this point, I’d trust a professional, befor start doing anodizing for myself…

It's a rare shot, but they did make plain-edge Civilians, Lil Matriarch style. Oh, and I love that backspacer! I have one for my PM2, RAT1, Matriarch 2 and Lil Matriarch but I have been kind of freaked out to disassemble the backlocks so I am enlisting my girlfriend's mechanically-inclined hands as standby 😂

I was lucky, paid $300 for my fancy XL, but that was "used". Oh, and when I say "anodize my aluminum", I'm actually alluding to smoking weed. Get up on the hip slang, would ya?
Jk, I would absolutely have it done by a pro, that is what I meant by "anodize it". No idea how to anodize myself, though.

Each of my " families " is broken into sub collections. Only 3 families here but many models. Olamic,Cheburkov and CRK
The rest of my knives are mongrels waitng to be adopted.

You and @BobDenman are totally going to screw up both my sensible plan and finances if you keep posting shots of your incredible Olamic collections!

I’m starting to wonder if retirement might not be over rated.

Lol...I'm always treading in that water and I've been retired 18 years.
We each have another one coming. We are trying to get a sponsorship from them.

Now, edited with better pictures!

Modern traditionals (it's a thing: watch out for the Traditional guys, some of them carry those canes to extend their reach!)

Yes, there was a picture of some non-locking knives, which I forgot to re-do with the good light. There is also a "tactical black" thread running through my collection. Maybe I should use this opportunity to boost my post count....................
