Your knife at the restaurant...

Have used my smaller EDC knives, the RAT 1 or ZT 350 are just too big for people to handle. The stares are ridiculous.

At nicer restaurants, it can be considered insulting to your server to do something like that. They're there to take care of every little detail for you, so even handing your plate to the bus boy can be considered rude (as if you're doing their job for them to make them feel inept). Just be careful what type of place you use a pocket knife. Most places will probably be fine, but if there's a bathroom attendant handing you towels and breath mints you should probably keep your knife in your pocket.

My edc is a super karambit, the ring is exposed, and people tend to notice. I don't ever have a reason to use it at the dinner table. Pulled it out a few times to cut Styrofoam food trays and yes people will look at your like you're gonna kill someone, rather avoid it if I can :)

No, I'll find other, easier, less embarrassing ways to play with my pocket knives.
lol :D

As for me, never have, only because I have really felt the need to.....
Im ok with ripping my food apart like a cave man

some of us don't carry toys in our pockets to play with and don't eat with our fingers, but enjoy your happy meals and lack of embarassment.

Respectful, therefore clever.

I have never pulled out my own knife at a restaurant.

When I order a steak at a nice place, if I cannot cut it with a butter knife, then it needs to go back, and that never happens.

I eat filet, and most of the time I can cut it with my fork.

I have used my pocket knives at home for fun, but never at a restaurant.

best regards -

Do you use a personal knife at the restaurant? If yes, which one?
How do people react? Do you care?
Any funny (or sad) stories?

Do I use my own knife at a restaurant on a regular basis? No.
Have I used it ever at a restaurant? Yes.
Did people react? Not that I noticed.
Do I care if they react? Hard to tell. Never had a reaction.

I stopped carrying a folder a fer months back and only carry a 3.75 blade DP hunter everywhere, I don't hesitate to use it whenever something needs to be cut. I also don't really worry about the M4 blade dulling on the plate either. Havnt really got any looks that I'm aware of, but don't really care either.

i couldn't have said it better myself.

my knife is a tool and i use it accordingly.

Now, I have used my knife to cut meats while camping, and I regularly use it to cut beef, deer sticks/summer sausage in my "Man Cave. These just seem like appropriate settings, and it's fun to boot. I will also use it to check meats when I'm grilling out on the back porch, sometimes, if I forget to bring out by grilling "tools".

There have been a few occasions where I have used my Large Regular Sebenza to cut up a steak when the provided 'steak' knife couldn't cut warm butter. The last time I did this, a friend of mine actually asked if she could use the Sebbie as well. In short, whether or not I use my EDC depends on the sharpness of knives provided. ;)

And frankly, I do not care if my EDC surprises anyone who is not knife friendly. :D

When I was in OK a few years ago, I went to a real uptown steak place with some friends. They brought us our steaks, and just had plain table ware. I and a few other gents asked for steak knives, to which the server informed us that the marinating they did to the steaks made them so tender you cut cut them with a fork. They must have had very dull forks.

A few of us had pocket knives, and those that didn't shared with the rest. The server was not happy, but then neither were we...

I would feel a little silly pulling out a pocket knife at a restaurant to cut my steak/potato/etc. I could get past the "silly" part if it were truly necessary. However, the part I can't get past is the idea of the knife being unsanitary to cut my food with. Pocket lint, pocket change, and other bacteria and germs build up on it--not to mention that I frequently oil the joints and keep the blade lubricated--last thing I want to eat is some Benchmade Blue Lube. If my knife were too dull to cut my food I would ask for another.

YMMV

I simply wipe my blade with a napkin if I notice any lint, smudges, lube(although I use Tuf-Glide(dry lube)), etc., on my knife before I use it on my food. And I tend to only use as much CRK grease as needed for the pivot on my Sebbie, so I don't have lube oozing out from there. As for germs.....I don't worry since my immune system doesn't allow me to get sick if someone looks at me wrong.

IMO, 'steak' knives that are provided in restaurants are only slightly sharper than butter knives for the simple reason of keeping customers from cutting themselves.

Nah, haven't done that, I think it's kind of silly. For one thing if I'm eating at a nice place I don't want to embarrass myself or invite looks, and if I'm paying money to dine out I expect them to have a sharp knife in the house.

Kind of saves on hassle of cleaning steak knives if you're just grilling at home or something.

i use only food safe lubricants on my knives, also, my money and knife don't share the same pocket. if i have to use my knife for food, i just wipe it off (i'll run it under water if possible).

I dunno, I think it's kinda' nerdy to whip out a knife of your own at a restaurant if it isn't necessary.
If the knife they give you isn't sharp enough to cut the steak or whatever, just ask for another one.
If the steak wasn't hot enough I wouldn't whip out my portable jungle stove and start roasting away either -- I'd ask them to heat it up again in the kitchen, like a normal person.
