Your knife at the restaurant...

i never have had to before, any place i buy a nice steak at usually the dull steak knife or butter knife will cut through fine w/o damaging the goods

i use my knife around co workers who know i carry one and use it like a sane human. today i opened my zt 0300 and opened a case of water for a struggling girl fumbling to open it and she said "oh, thats smart. maybe i will bring one tomorrow" lol. but then later that day with a dirty 10" chef knife beside where i was, a customer needed something adjusted to the container offered. i opened the knife again when a passer by of the large kitchen i work at looked at me in shock and asked what i was doing. while i simply didn't want to contaminate the customers property with a dirty knife.

I've had tons of steaks that we're cooked right that a crappy steak knife couldn't do justice to. A nice sharp knife would've just made the amazing steak even better.

maybe you guys should be bringing a rod sharpener or wet stone to the restaurant and just sharpen the knives on the table during the time between you ordering dinner and the delivery ha

Dammit you beat me to it!

I did today for the first time actually, at P.F. Changs. You know what I wasnt to impressed with P.F. changs, first time ive ever been in one we dont have one locally and I was down in Pittsburgh to go to REI. It was good, but I thought changs was a higher scale restaurant.

Ohh well, I only used the knife to help cut because the whole knife game is still new to me and I use any excuse I can to use my delica.

I've never felt the need to use my own knife while eating out, but I can understand where people are coming from when they say they have.

And I find it hard to believe that those of you pretentious enough to send a steak back because you can't "cut it with a fork" wouldn't also appreciate the advantages of a nice clean slice. I also fail to see how asking for another steak knife is really going to help your situation. Do you think they are going to cut open a brand new package? Or perhaps have the head chef take a break and hand sharpen it to your liking?

Do you use a personal knife at the restaurant? If yes, which one?
How do people react? Do you care?
Any funny (or sad) stories?

Nope I don't.... And never had to either.

If the steak or whatever can't be cut with what they supply then it's not worth eating and it goes back.

But then I tend to go to good restaurants when I do go out to eat so I have never had any issues.

Ok, that was damn funny right there!

I dont think its so much the fact that the knife the restaurant gives you is adequate, its just that people like to play with their knives. I dont know where the heck you are eating if the knives they give you cant cut your food.

Yeah really, even places like the Waffle House supply knives that will cut the food well.

I've sharpened knives for a restaurant that I frequented, nothing fancy, so in a way I sharpened the knives that were used to prep my food, for use of my knives, sure thing, I prefer my steak / chicken cut up, not ripped up, I leave that work for my teeth.

If I had the money you could bet that I'd have my manservant deliver my cups, plates, knives, spoons, forks and monogrammed table linens before I arrived, I would have my chef and food prep team arrive beforehand to cook for me as well. :foot:

I don't care if my fillet can be cut with a fork, I want to cut it with a knife, preferably one that will slice with ease, nothing is as barbaric as a man that saws at his food or is too ignorant to use the proper tableware!

Real answer, I'm not rich, the servers don't know or care so yes, my knives on occasion do get used and after the meal they get washed while I wash my hands, it's a time thing, wait for 5 minutes at a place like the cheesecake factory where the servers are mostly lazy college students who won't even keep your drink filled much less respond to a raised hand OR pull out the knife and start eating, hoping that by the time you've finished your food the server will be back, bill in hand, so you can squeeze in the "Pardon me, could I get my drink re-filled"

some of us aren't pretentious and don't feel the need to show off our knives everywhere we go.

If you are eating at a restaurant and need your ultrasharp pocket knife to cut a steak, return the steak cuz they cooked it wrong...

Some of us can manage to use a knife without being an attention whore, and also manage to eat more than steak. Some of us have also received no flatware at all after requests for such or had to wait 20 minutes for the wait staff to show up before they or management got an earful. But good for you, I'm sure you don't need a knife in your fairy tale land where you eat rainbows and gumdrops all day and can't take out your knife without doing a backflip and screaming "LOOK AT MY KNIFE".

I've never used my knife to cut steak in a restaurant...you guys are doing it wrong. I've used my knife to cut large items I can't hold or eat without being a complete slob; things like gyros, burgers, sandwiches, and burritos. Mostly at hole in the wall places that only have plastic.

I never really had a need to. The steak houses here have knives that look like a butter knife(rounded tip) but with deeper serrations. So far they worked good enough for me. All this talk is making me want some steak :D

Now that makes some sense.

hardheart,

You sound angry. Please don't let our comments make you so. We're not saying you can't can't play with your pocket knife at your local steak house. I'm just saying...doing so is, well how can I put it...is just a little lowbrow. You know, kinda like your comments in this thread.

The difference between you and I is that I won't insult you if my opinion differs from yours.

Point is, if you CAN cut your filet with your fork, and well you should be able to if it is prepared correctly, then the provided knife at the restaurant will do the chore just fine, and be quite civilized in doing so.

best regards -

So then I guess I'm lowbrow, Doug. I carry my knife to use it when it needs to be used. Whether that's breaking down boxes, envelopes, cutting string, stripping wire, cutting up an apple, or a steak, my knife gets used. When the place I go to grab a bite to eat gives me a butter knife to cut up my food I use my pocket knife. You may call it lowbrow, I call it using my brain.

There's nothing wrong with using your pocket knife at a restaurant. I don't care whether you're at a dive serving burgers and fries or you're at the newest and trendiest of restaurants. If you have a pocket knife and you would rather use that than the subpar, dull, piece of garbage they hand you then it's your prerogative. For those of you who don't feel it's necessary to use your pocket knife to cut up your food and would rather use whatever they hand you, that's just fine and that's how you feel. For those of you who would feel embarrassed or lowbrow for using your pocket knife to do what it was made to do, maybe you shouldn't be carrying a pocket knife?

Tony8179,

My comments weren't intended for you. I apologize that they come off as a blanket statement. They were directed only at the one indivdual who seems to keep making "lowbrow" insults in response to others point of view. Though, I really struggle to understand how my feelings that the local steak house is not the place I want to use my pocket knife, should in any way disqualify me from carrying a pocket knife.
