For me these 5 types are essencial:
-swell end jack
-medium stockman
-pen knife (something a wee bit on the fancier side)
-scout/camp knife/SAK/Sportsmesser
-lockback

This has been a very interesting read ... and how dramatically different I see all of our favorites patterns are.

OK. Please keep in mind that I am weird and/or strange. :)
1) Buck 110 and 112
2) Large Stockman (4" or more closed) and a large Moose or Trapper
3) Large (4" closed or more) Sunfish/Whaler/Elephant Toenail/British Rope Knife/Pocket Axe or whatever other name you might know it by.
4) 4 Blade Scout Knife and a 2 and 3 layer SAK
5) 2 Blade Barlow (at least one each Sheepsfoot, Spear Point, and Clip Point main, with pen secondary)
6) Marlin Spike/Clasp Knife
7) Opinel At least one number 6 or larger, and at least one number 5 or smaller.
8) Okapi

Fixed Blades:
1) Morakniv Number 1 and/or 2
2) Buck 103
3) Buck 119
4) Bird and Trout
5) Ontario 499 'Jet Pilot Survival Knife
6) Ontario 499 Marine Combat Knife
7) Cold Steel Bushman (it makes a heck of a nice spear head)

My simple list of must have traditional pocket knives.......
1) U.S.A made Medium Stockman(3-5/8”)
2)U.S.A made Standard Stockman(3-7/8”-4”)
3) U.S.A made Stockman with a punch.
4)Solingen or Sheffield made Stockman.
5) Any jack or pen configuration with a clip and sheepsfoot combo. See above reference for preferred countries of origin.

At least this works for me.....

Still thinking about the last four but my #1 would be an amber stag copperhead by Bill Ruple. It's probably more of a "never-own" than a "must-own" though. :D

I agree that the copperhead is a very good choice... Ruple made would only improve it. The mini copperhead would also be a wonderful addition and a must own.

I know my tastes are a bit different, but....

You simply must put a good cigar pattern somewhere in the mix. A Case 55 Jack or GEC 68 pen are both excellent examples.

My choices:

1) a medium size 3 blade stockman such as the Schrade UH897 or GEC #66

Must own traditional folders from around the world:

  • Buck 110 - US
  • Barlow - Great Britain
  • Mercator “cat” - Germany
  • Opinel #8 - France
  • Douk Douk - France
  • SAK - Switzerland
  • Okapi - South Africa
  • Higonokami - Japan
  • Stiletto - Italy
  • Balisong - Philippines
  • Mikov fish knife - Czech Republic

1. Opinel 6,7, or 8.
2. Sodbuster
3. Stockman or SAK, preferably one with a punch
4. Mora
5. A single blade sheepsfoot, like a MAM Tipica, Okapi Biltong, or the 2016 BF Barlow, or a multi with a long sheepsfoot, like Improved Muskrat or Hawbaker.

1. Barlow - I prefer the TC clip/pen variety but a 77 or Case is a fine substitute.
2. Case Swayback Jack
3. SAK Pioneer/Soldier
4. Case Trapper
5. Sodbuster - any brand

Here I go, but I can't go 5, and I'm going to name general types.....

1. A pocket knife on the small side, along the lines of a peanut; or pen knife; or small stockman; something easily carried in the front pocket of suit pants or slacks, or carried all the time because this will be the knife you find yourself using the most if you have it on you.

2. A SAK or Boy Scout type of knife; one that has just the tools you would need 60-80% of the time, carried when you know you might need it, or carried all the time because you never know (example, Victorinox Pioneer, but just one example, and don't forget about scissors if so desired)

3. A folder on the larger size with one or two (or three) blades, perhaps a hunter, or large stockman, because you don't need a specific reason but you will find some uses for it

…….. Just my opinions, decades of hindsight.
