This 2023 Remington reproduction Hawkbill arrived late yesterday afternoon. I am especially pleased that the jigged bone covers have deep, rich red, coloring and not the light pinkish coloring shown on the vendors advertisement. The knife has excellent fit and finish what with smooth transitions between the bolsters and covers, and flush joints at closed, half stop, and open positions. There are no gaps, cracks, chips, drips, runs, or errors on this knife. Bear & Son did a great job on these knives. It's quite a large knife so carrying it will be limited. I got it simply because I wanted it and like the Remington Bullet Knife reproductions being built by Bear & Son and GEC commissioned by Remington in the past and now SMKW.

This Rough Rider Arctic Fox Hawkbill came in the other day. Really great, bang-on, fit and finish. Nice white micarta covers with black micarta accent liners underneath. They can be seen at the cover/bolster transition. The black micarta fox head shield is a nice touch.

Well guys, I just received my first traditional! NIB Colt Black Stag Canoe folder. I'm not sure who made this knife but it is long been discontinued from Colts merch line! Here are a few quick pics until I can find time for a proper photo shoot with some of my other Colt knives and guns!

So, in the last month, I gave a few Rosecraft models a shot. The Nolichucky Jack, the Savage Creek gunstock in micarta, and the Loosahatchee Jack in red sandalwood. All are fantastic in regard to fit and finish, especially for the money.

Wanting to try something of the US made variety in a budget model, I ordered a couple Bear and Son sheepsfoot barlows, as the seem to be getting pretty good feedback. I ordered one in smooth white bone and one in rosewood. I paid $72.50 for both of them (total, not each) on the big auction site.

The smooth white bone model arrived today. Fit and finish is not as machine perfect as the Rosecrafts, nor did I expect it to be, but it’s good nonetheless.

There is no gapping at the springs/liners, no blade play, and centering is good. Springs, liners, and bolsters are very well mated flush and smooth. Action is good and pull decent, with positive half stop, open, and close.

The blade shape is super attractive to me, with a lovely swedge and well done long pull, although the cutting edge is not dead nuts straight, but that may even out with some sharpening. It did come sharp. Spring is flush in open and closed positions, and only slightly proud at half stop.

The only real ding on the one I received, which I have not seen any other complaints about elsewhere (I think I was just unlucky), is the very white bone on mine came with what appears to be off-white color staining surrounding the rear spring pin on both sides. I’m not totally sure if it isn’t actually naturally occurring discoloration, but it certainly looks more like some sort of seeped oil or something similar localized to just that spot on both sides. I may try dyeing the covers to eliminate it, or not. Either way, it’s not problematic enough to me to return it to the vendor.

Overall, for around $36 for a US made knife, I think it’s a pretty good deal. Looking forward to the rosewood one to arrive.

I've been happy with the 4 of them that I've ordered. I love the Jigged Bone one with carbon blade and I've carried it quite a bit. I keep hoping they announce some other blade shapes, I want a spear blade.

The stark white bone scales with the odd discoloration on the new Bear and Son Barlow were bothering me enough that I took matters into my own hands.

Slathered them in brown Fiebings leather dye and let it marinate a while. Cleaned and polished them back out. Now they look like a nice golden antique smooth bone. I’m very pleased with how they turned out.
