Your newest addition:traditionals of course!

I drove to Canberra yesterday...3hrs🤨
Cardiologist visit.
So I went early to scrounge around the op shops and antique places....This gem for 28 bux was nestled in a cabinet among some grossly overpriced very worn knives...At least this one has some blade left and the wood is much lighter than the other of this brand I have....not sure about the bail...anyway Hick by name.

Welp ... the Szco Barlow arrived today. 😁👍
Sadly, too dark to get a pic when they gave it to me. I will take & post some tomorrow.

Very happy.
Both blades are centered, no spring/liner/bolster/cover gaps. Blades are sharp and have even bevels.

Quite excellent for an thrifty Barlow.

Im puzzled by this...heres the 2 of them side by side...identical twins...except for
The bails...maybe an older version but likely a home repair/replacement job...
The wood: I didnt like the scratched on name so sanded it away...and just look at the colour difference. I wonder if the darker one is the same without the patina. He scratched it on the blade as well but barely visble so it can stay
Both stamped 3097 JAPAN nut is one carbon and the other stainless??? So many questions.

Cheers.

Photos as promised, above. 😃👍
Centered blades.

20260306_085148.jpgNot too shabby for $12.⁴⁰ including the Governor's share (bribe/kickback needed to pay to spend yer money ... AKA: "Sales Tax") and shipping. 😎

The two I had before this one were of the same quality.

After lubing the joints and stropping, (standard operating procedure) I dropped it in my pocket with the other 2 that I am carrying.

Damn, where'd you manage to get this one ?
Did you pre-order from SHC and just maybe place your order long before me or something ?

That edge looks very nice, at least on the side I can see.
I had a suspicion that they'd be executing these about as well as they have been their Barlows, and I think my suspicion was right.
This is the 3rd I've seen and all have had fairly well ground blades.

The very first Case I bought almost 15 years ago was a black synthetic SS sodbuster Jr, the edge on that one was absolutely 100% perfect and while I've never had another Case that perfect my Barlows have been very good.

Yeah, I put in a pre-order pretty much as soon as I saw these being advertised. Looks like they did a good job on this run, I'm kind of regretting not ordering more than one.

So SHC has begun shipping?
They're still listed on backorder, but there is one that's listed as " new item shipping this week " .
I haven't really paid much attention to how it goes, but I'm thinking they're going to fulfill preorders first ?

I was gonna say wait for what else they release, but looking on SHC they've got a bunch of others I don't remember seeing before.
Sadly it's still just the 2 CS options though ( they always gotta burts my bubble somehow ) , so that's probably it unless SMKW steps in to offer an exclusive.
Hopefully it's something good and not PB&J or pocket worn grey.

They have, at least for certain options. I would imagine that they probably handle the preorders first, but I don't know that for sure.

I am a big fan of this old camillus pattern. It's thin and snappy and has the stamped tipped bolsters.

The newest one is a Cornwall knife Co, New York. It has two layers, the normal clip blade and a bottle opener/screw driver. Pearlish covers. Steel shield. Super smooth and snappy.

Here is the original one I found. It just says USA on it but it is camillus. Same pattern with just the clip and jigged celluloid.

Same pattern as the what a knife too. The "what a knife" is a bit heavier duty of course, and much younger.

I really like that clip blade.
It doesn't have any excess expenditures like swedges or anything, but it's just a perfect no frills clip point.

For sure! These must have been a more economical offering from the company but they are well made and as you said that clip blade is really nice.

I'm not a bottle opener guy and the stock for that is much thicker, but it's still cool

Gotta watch out when looking for those nicer knives like the camillus above.

There are many "colonial" style knives that look similar and they are not very nice. They're ok, don't get me wrong, but not near as good as the old camillus.

Only ground on one side, probably much much newer. Fit and finish is non existent. Looks like pop rivets holding it together. Novelty/advertising type knives.

Big haul from the Neverending giveaway box reduction. Some really great pieces here. A big thank you to everyone who helped start and continue that fun tradition(?) going for 118 some-odd rounds now.

These are the few that were instant favorites from the box, most were a complete surprise how much I liked them. The rest I'll have to spend more time with to get to know.

The Kabar wrench knife is smaller and lighter than I expected, which was a welcome surprise. It has reground at one point and needed some more TLC. Its not done yet but I started flatening the grinds over the weekend. But the thin profile, low maintenance construction and unobtrusive size make it a fun little knife once I can even out the bevels at bit more.

The XL Schrade liner lock hunter is a beast of a knife at ~6" closed, but the quality, fit, finish, and edge thinness remind me of GEC, except maybe cover fitment. This is peak Schrade USA and its an impressive knife. I'll have it this hunting season. Not sure if it will do any skinning, but I'll find something to cut this fall. Maybe a nice tenderloin from this year's future harvest.

The plainjane case sodbuster jr had some heavy patina but underneath the blade was in reasonable shape. The simple utility of the yellow delrin scales never appealed to me until I had it in my hands. Now its in my pocket along with the GEC 13 single blade. Nice rounded handle is smooth but hand filling. Feels like it belongs in the pocket. Perfect blend of quality and utility I had overlooked for years. Truly an underrated knife I think.

I was most excited for the case redbone Barlow, which I was eyeing for the past 5 rounds or so, totally surprised it stuck around so long. Uppon arrival it was clear why most photos showed it in the closed position. It was hiding some deep pitting and a hollow edge. It will need some work to hopefully win me back.

Lastly the Rosecraft is a pretty dang nice knife. I see why they hit the scene with a big following quite quickly. Can't find anything wrong with it from a user perspective, and with D2 steel!
