A Sheepsfoot plus pen blade is my favorite combination. A Wharncliffe is almost as good.
The Case Sway Back Jack strikes me as Case's attempt at a top of the line fit and finish knife. It costs about half again as much as a one of their regular patterns, but the fit and finish is a significant step above that of a lot of their regular knives. Too bad all they are making these days is the "gent" single blade models.
Picked up this one in Tru-Sharp and Red Barnboard Crimson bone that has been languishing on a dealer's back pages for some time now. The dye job on the bone is imperfect, but the fit of the blades is superlative. Springs are flat in all three positions: closed, at half stop, and open. A keeper for sure, but the imperfect dye job brings it in just a bit below the fit and finish of my CV Sway Back, which is as perfect as any GEC I own.
Snap!
As we used to say when I was a kid for a Big coincidence!
New one for me yesterday.
Basically been unsure about these sway backs since I was pattern browsing in the spring, and one caught my eye. For me sheepsfoot and clip is the perfect combo, but wharncliffe is good too, and I can live with a pen. But the size was a touch smaller than I prefer.
Couldn't justify the cost on a maybe-- And as you say, the cost premium on TB patterns is really annoying! And I too really wanted the jack over the gent.
I'd been eyeing that crimson one for a while, pretty sure I know where you snagged it. Almost did it a couple times, but just couldn't swing the $.
Anyway, long story shorter, last week I found a good deal on this one, used but pretty damn minty at a low start bid auction, and snapped it up.
2012 Limited Edition marigold bone SS Sway back jack.
It's got about as much wear on it as I'd put on in a week or two of pocket time, just light scuffing of the shine. I'd swear it's wearing factory edges too!
Have to agree, fit and finish on these is fantastic, and all the details too. Longer spring tail to fill the secondary blade chanel, the light almost ghosted swedges, smooth half stops, sunk joints. Just wonderful.
Really wondering why I waited now, haha! Might even snap up one of the single blade gents sometime too.
