I am new to this forum so please forgive me if this quesiton has already made the rounds, but would still greatly appreciate your input.

If you could only take one blade with you into the woods for an exteneded period what would be your choice......please share with me makers and models, store bought and folks that forge and how to reach them.

I don't have much at all to spend, so I'm looking for something reasonablly priced to. Thank you in advance for sharing your expertise with me.

Blessings,

Thundermoon

First of all, welcome to the campfire man!!

My JK kephart would be that one. John is very easy to work with, and will make you one with your choice of brown, black, 2 tone, or oak scales, and various pin combos and it will be just over a bill in cost, with a very quick turnaround time. I highly reccomend you take a look at his stuff.

Is there a website for his blades? Being so new I don't recognize JK. Thank you again for your help, I hope many will respond. However, this looks like a really great blade.

hey, welcome,
i think that i would go with the lowly mora #1 with plain birch handle that i ordered here:
http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.aspx?c=2&p=31077&cat=1,51222&ap=1 (letter C)

i've been using it pretty constantly since i got it about 7 months ago, and its still going strong. its a little uglier and the handle is a deep brown now, but it is still doing everything i want it to. won't break the bank either.

i would also say that i would probably be pretty comfy with my new large Case stockman in CV.

some popular knives that will likely be mentioned, and i agree with based on my limited experience, are;
fallkniven
bark river knife and tool
scott gossman (gossman knives on the forums here)
JK (stomper on these forums)
bryan breeden customs (on the forum here)

there are a ton more, the point being that there are alot of different knives that work for alot of different people, because it all comes down to personal skill level and the things that each person does with their knife.

Hey there. If you're looking for blade recommendations, flip a couple pages back. It was asked twice just in the last week or so and those posts have a wealth of information in them.

As far as what would I take for extended periods of time in the woods? I'd go with my Chopweiler. I hope it's not cheating that the little Swamp Warden gets to come along because he's in the same sheath :) They are made by a company called Swamp Works Knives, which is an offshoot company of Busse Combat.

There are lots of great choices. Its all in your tastes. I love my jk its perfect for me.
I also love the bark river knives such as the aurora, northstar, fox river, and bravo1
There are some great customs in the makers for sale area that would fit the bill nicely.
I am also liking brian breedens work, and koyotes blades as well. I dont own any(yet) but they have definatly peaked my interests.

You have come to right place to see lots of great knives from a variety of companies and makers. And the group here as a whole gets out and uses their knives. Tough choice though since the knives I have all suit me perfectly. But the one that has been on the most trips, is most comfortable in hand, holds a great edge plus is easy to sharpen is still my NWA forum knife. This knife has done it all, and continues to rock.

Welcome to the forum.
Another vote for the Bravo-1 (on the right in picture)

The one in the photo is my son's. I don't have a picture of mine in black canvas micarta.

I'd more than happy to have with me any Bark River Kife & Tool with a blade longer than 5 inches, a Rat Cutlery RC-4 or a Busse Combat Skinny ASH-1.

Welcome to the forum, How much is not alot to spend? I see alot of recommendations for the Bravo1 and it is well deserved, but cost around $200!

I second the JK knives kephart and throw will add the following makers. both custom and production. All can be had around $100 or less

David Farmer knives www.dfarmerknives.com
Koyote knives http://www.koyotemakesstuff.com

BRKT Fox River
Rat cutlery RC-4

I would definately recommend Fiddleback also, but his stuff is hard to come by, and then its just 1 more guy I got try to be quicker then in the for sale threads:D

Thanks.......regretfully based on my current financial situation, likely $100 or less....don't mean to whine, guess funds are tight for us all right now.

Thats plenty for a quality blade, you just have to ask yourself do you want it pretty or functional.

The FoxRiver by BRKT is a great knike that can be had for about $100 if you want simple handle materials like canvas micarta. you just have to look around online for the best deal.

The same goes for the RC-4, This blade has a choil and a black coating which some don't like, but its still a kick a$$ knife.

Any of the custom makers that were mentioned make an excellent blade to your specs, or you can let them choose the specs and just tell them what you want it for.

Oh i almost forgot Breeden Knives kickass knives at a great price!
http://www.myspace.com/breedenknives
tacklebreeden@yahoo.com

You could get an excellent custom from one of our great makers here for $100.
Check out Bryan Breeden, Stomper, Koyote, Charlie Ridge (there are others that I can't think of right now)
