If you can track down an older Becker those are a great value. While their not made anymore, they still pop up on the bay from time to time.

I've been doing alot of pimping of the RAT cutlery knives lately just because I really think their an amazing value and great knives. I wouldn't hesitate to take my RC-4 on any extended trips as it is right now.

And like has been mentioned, there are some great makers here on the boards who are selling great knives for around a hundred bucks.

All very good selections... Any of the knives listed above would be a good choice.

When we say "one blade with you into the woods for an extended period"... I think ok... shelter construction, food prep, perhaps some chopping and batoning for fire and other tasks, I'd want a durable blade that keeps its edge even through hard use.

For me that is a Busse. I haven't found anything tougher that holds an edge better (and is quite rust resistant as a bonus).

I have been enjoying this one a lot lately... It is a hell razor... not too big... not too small. ;) 7" blade, .187 thick.

When you taking it into the woods for extended periods, am I assuming you mean that you will be making shelters etc ?
If that is the case I would recommend something such as this.....

Couple it with something like this and you will be good to go and still staying pretty close to your budget !!!

I'll take that one off ya for $100 !!!!

if i could only take one blade into the woods it would be either my Gransfors Bruks small forest axe or my koyote bushcrafter. both are very well rounded tools and both can do most any outdoor task i can think of. they cant necisarily do ever task amazingly, but they can at least do it decently. i would be hard-pressed to make a figure four trap with the GB axe but it would also be kindof difficult to chop wood with the koyote bushcrafter, but in either scenario, each tool would be able to do that task.

here are some pics:

If I could only have one moderately priced knife...It would be a 5-6" and under or around a hundred bucks.

Fallkniven S-1
RAT-5
TAK 1
Cold Steel SRK

Welcome thundermoon! I would also suggest a Rat Cutlery RC-4 with a plain edge no serrations.

I am really surprised nobody has mentioned any Becker knives. in fact now that I think about it, I don't see them mentioned on this forum very much at all. Have they fallen from favor since they are on "vacation" until Kabar starts production???

I would take my BK10 Crewman.

Thundermoon?

At under $100, at least investigate the Mora 2000. Use it, go from there on your choice of more expensive or custom knives.

Be careful. Addictive stuff.

You have come to right place to see lots of great knives from a variety of companies and makers. And the group here as a whole gets out and uses their knives. Tough choice though since the knives I have all suit me perfectly. But the one that has been on the most trips, is most comfortable in hand, holds a great edge plus is easy to sharpen is still my NWA forum knife. This knife has done it all, and continues to rock.

+1 I totally agree! There are a lot talented makers on here. The hardest part is to pick which one you want to go with. :D SO now you are back to square one again. :D

Snakedoc...your screenname...

Are you are urologist?

Sorry, back to the topic.

No, just a fan of the unit... ok that sounds a little ghey... I mean the TV show The Unit..:D:D

I haven't seen a Becker for under a bill in quit some time.... Well worth the cash even at $125 - $150.

They are still great but hard to come by right now, until the Ka-bar made ones start rolling out. The Crewman and the Patrol Bowie are all stars in my book.

They are highly thought of on this forum but they don't get mentioned when someone asks what knife to get because, like you pointed out, they are not available at this moment in time unless you pay the crazy jacked up prices on the second hand market !!!

I second pitdog's statement I have a few Beckers (BK1,BK7,BK11) all users and I am sure after Ka-bar release, they'll be mentioned again.
