Your Number One Blade Choice?

Hi Thundermoon and Welcome This is what I take to the woods almost every day I cut trees for part of my living and make knives for the other part.
I call my knife the Pathfinder here is a couple of pics and the sheath I made for it. I beleive that it is important to see your knife if dropped or set down. That is why mine has a orange handle on it. This one has a 6" long by 5/32" thick blade I normally carry a Pathfinder with a 5" by 1/8" thick blade but since making this up a couple of weeks back for myself I am loven this blade length and thickness. I use this blade from in the kitchen to my camp chores and if this was the only knife I could take out of all the other
knives I have used and owned this would be it. This design is perfect for me.
These cost a round a $120 but most of the knives I make are under a $100.

Thanks.......regretfully based on my current financial situation, likely $100 or less....don't mean to whine, guess funds are tight for us all right now.

For about $60, you can easily hook up with a Ka-Bar fighting knife just about anywhere, except Kabar.com they want almost $100. It is a fairly decent blade made out of some pretty decent steel as I understand it. I baton, chop, carve, cook, slice, everything with mine and it is from the Korean War.

Also, don't discount some of the brands you find at local stores like Buck, Schrade, Gerber, etc. They all have some very fine knives and you have the option of feeling them in your hand before ordering alot of times.

Hope this helps

Hey Bryan... Great looking knife!

What kind of steel is it?
Does it hold a good edge with constant use?

Thanks...

coal digger, i am digging your budget set up. it could be under $20 if you got a tram (but they dont come with a sheath.

brian, great looking knives, i really like the sheaths to. do you also make those?

kdstrick the knives that I make our out of 0-1 carbon steel and yes they hold and edge well,0-1 is a really good steel. I use mine all the time for trail clearing and in the kitchen just for the fun of it. I normally carry two fixed blades there is a pouch on the back side of my sheath and I have a smaller fixed blade in it pouch/sheath. I just put the handles on another knife today that will replace the one I have been carrying. The new one has 4" blade and a 3.75" handle It makes me think of a Swiss Army knife like the rucksack but is a fixed blade. I will shape the handles in the morning and then start to carry that I have been carrying the carson 4 by crkt. I will post a pic or when done.

Take care,

Bryan

I got to thinking if I did not have my Pathfinder then my next choice
would be a Kelly knife like this one with a 5" to 6" blade
and either in 1/8" or the 5/32"

and with the sheath that I made for my pathfinder. I really like the look of the kelly knife and the way it shaped for a al round simple knife that can do the cutting from camp to kitchen.

Well as for price my number one at the moment isn't going to help you at $130 and that's that Gransfors mini. For cheapest I would go with, it would be the Gerber/Fiskars 14 inch hatchet at $20-$30. I like hatchet's but I'm really not a "hatchet snob." But, for a good fixed blade you have to spend $50 bucks or more. In there I would go with a shorty (5 inch) kabar or more likely on of the RAT line. Probably the RAT 3.

You very much need to look up Dave Farmer. His blades have some of the best edges of any knife I've ever handled. They will work for a living. The best part is it will cost a lot less than most all the knives listed here, and it's hand made. He's a member here, and also has a website.

I'd say you could get one of his and a Fiskars hatchet and still make it under a hundred, depending on what you order.

I'm w/ Spooky: +1 on David Farmer. He has made me a little 'un and is making me a big 'un, so I'm sure he can make something for 'one blade in the woods' purpose. And his convex edges come shaving sharp yet are tough for hard use. You are in luck as he just revamped his website for a better look at his craft and prices. http://dfarmerknives.com/Home_Page.html
Also, like many have said, there's lots of talented makers around these parts.

Coaldigger, That is a great low budget set up. It is funny or sick depending on your perspective but I have sent thousands on knives over the years (no joke) and really I could survive just fine with your combo.
