Your Personal Survival Knife

Rat 3 slung over my shoulder or in my pack.

I really dig that setup! Lots of paracord if you need it and the rest in a handy pouch. I bet that's great for the quicker outings. -Matt-

For my first and only *survival knife*, I chose the Becker BK-7 Combat/Utility knife.

Initially I left the knife and sheath stock and having read about the Altoids tin kits that were being made up for the pouches on the Becker knife sheaths, I went ahead and gave it a try.

Then after carrying the knife into the woods on a few occassions, I decided I was going to have to modify it some so that the knife rode high on my belt, which I prefer, but also because there was a slight rattle in the sheath when I moved. The modification worked, the knife is silent in the sheath and it's high and tight on my belt. At the same time, because the sheath was prone to catching on brush and stuff, I added a couple of ranger bands to the bottom, helping to eliminate that problem as well.

Then I added some paracord, a 1-gallon ziploc bag for water carry (since moved inside of the pouch after removing the bottle of Iodine pills) and because I found the handles on the Becker to be a bit small in my hand and noticing a slight vibration when chopping with the knife, I opted for the micarta scales that Camillus offered for awhile. The grip became solid for me, less prone to hand slipping in wet weather and for me, better weight to the knife. The difference in weight of the scales didn't affect the balance of the knife too much, so chopping wasn't affected much, if at all. Plus, I like the way they look.

Nice kits. Lots of great designs.

I am actually saving some cash for a custom sheath with similar attachments for a small kit.

I usually do some small amount of tweaking on my knives. On coated blades I remove the coating, I'll sand Micarta scales to roughen them up, grind down corners that may bite my hand.

Thanks Matt, I actually got the idea from bear gryll's water bottle. I have a small d ring that I sometimes use to clip the bottom of the sheath to a belt loop, works well.Chris

I have a pretty simple set up: Ranger 5.5" fixed blade, LM Wave and a small Emerson folder.

I just bought a Leatherman Wave today. I really like it. This is my first time carrying a multi-tool into the woods with me and I enjoy the idea of it. I believe it will take some pressure off of my knife for the small duties. The leather sheath was easy to attach to my fixed blade knife sheaths.

My current big knife is a Busse Combat Badger Attack TAC. It is riding in a Spec Ops survival sheath. The only modification was the addition of a leg strapp to keep from slapping into the side of my leg. The pouch is crammed with fire starting supplies. At this time no modifications to the knife. I try to buy gear that is as close to perfect as I can find so I don't have to a lot of modifing to make it to work for me. One of the reasons I like seeing other peoples gear and sharing what I have found.

Don't have a pic yet, but I carry a mini Bushman that I mod'ed. Reprofiled it into a drop point and sanded the blade down. Still gotta get a sheath from Eric. I really like it and it was so inexpensive.

Nice sheath, James!

The Urban Jungle of South Florida requires a different survival knife than what most of you would consider standard on this forum.
The main goal of this blade is retention of my primary pistol.
I've modified the kydex sheath by changing the Tec-loc to a loop allowing
IWB In waist band carry.
It's carried on the weak hand side, has a 6 inch double edged blade and is 1/8 inch thick.
This is a custom made Persian fighter. It has a Persian style blade with a Bob Kasper type grip.

nice knife! Scott sure does turn out some nice ones! What would you use it for that is out of the ordinary?

+1 on the Busse Badger. It rocks. I carry it in a spec ops sheath with a fire rod and a swiss army hiker.

My Ranger RD-4, at 3/16th, works very well. Especially paired with an axe and a Leatherman in a seperate pouch.
