Your real survival knife

Easy one for me to answer.
One of these two are always with me in the woods.

The Ritter/Benchmade fixed blade.

Charlie May's OSK 1.
As is my normal habit, a Ritter folder is in my left pocket.

I too rotate some of my knives, however I can assure you that if I'm outdoors I almost always have a fixed blade on me from 3" on up to 5.5" along with a decent locking folder and my SAK Outrider. As already stated, I wouldn't necessarily call it my "survival" knife, but more of the "knife that you'll have with you for the sitatuation you least expect". I enjoy larger blades, axes and machetes as much as most here, but you're right about the knife you have with you when you need it...a 5.5" blade is about as big as I go for a belt-knife, and that's the one I will have with me as long as I am wearing pants:o I do also carry my smaller Fallkniven WM-1 in a MercHarness...I'm sure that would come in handy during a visit to a nude survival school and something unforeseen popped up:eek: :D

If I'm in the woods I almost always have at least 2 fixed blades,(1 on me 1 in pack or bag),2 folders,(vic classic, tinker,or outrider) and my old Gerber multitool. And maybe a tomahawk or other chopper( outcast, ontario, tram).Probably overkill but (gasp) I like knives. ;-D

I pretty much always have my Buck 303 Cadet on me or a Spyderco Native everyday...so this is what would be on me no matter what. If I know I will be out of the city and in the mountains or potentially going to the mountains then I would surely have my Buck 110, my David Farmer small fixed blade would be very close by as well.

A sak or another pocket knife. If I have my pants on theres a knife in the pocket, and since I always have that, then that's what my survival knife is. Anything else, like my PSK and larger cutlery is gravy on the potatos.

Most likely? Hard to say, as I use a lot of different knives. I can tell you, though, that it will with absolute certainty be a fixed blade, under 11" in blade length. Most likely 3 to 6" of blade, could be anything from a traditional Tommipuukko to a Fällkniven A1.

Breeden Pathfinder every day rain or shine. With it's 5" blade
length it will handle all the kitchen to camp duties I have
ever needed to do. From cutting up french bread and then
spreading the mayo to making fuzzsticks and splitting branches
for the camp fire.

Now, when I went to "work" today...and had to travel by air about a half-hour's flight away...I had the following cutlery on or about my person:

Gerber Compact Sportsman Multi-Tool on belt
Benchmade Mini-Ares Stryker Auto clipped to right front pocket
Victorinox Scibeer-modified Farmer SAK with scissors in left front pocket
Cold Steel SRK on survival pouch belt
Leatherman Wave with black coating on survival pouch belt
Victorinox Ranger SAK in survival pouch
Benchmade Monochrome folder in survival pouch

But my "work area" is slightly different than most! And this is not what I would normally be carrying when out in the bush back home.:D

Victorinox Soldier or Farmer, Classic on keychain, and one of my Hiker`s Backups in my pocket.

My farmer and HB are always in my pockets. So its more then likely that they will be what I have. I also carry a medium fixed blade, but that varies. I would be comfortable w/ just a farmer and small fixed blade though.

Well I can say without a doubt, the one knife I always have on me is a Scibeer Woodsman SAK. Always.

When in the Bush my most likely fixed blade is a PSKsr or WTK by Scott Gossman, possibly a TAK-1 (but not really since I go the Gossmans). I may have a lockblade like a Kershaw Cyclone or my SAK fireman, or possibly a Multitool. But I am more likely to have the Woodsman and the PSKsr then anything else these days.

Unless I am in an area where I can't (which is pretty rare) I ALWAYS have my necker, SAK outrider, and my foorst forged sheath knife on me. Just always.

I've since wrapped 550 over the waxed linen on the utility knife

My opinions about carry knives track my opinions about carry guns pretty closely: the best one is the one you're going to have with you all the time. For knives, that would be my Gerber Freeman S30V folder. Drop point, 3-1/2" blade, sharp as a scalpel, and legal. Legal is kind of an issue around here. If I'm intentionally setting out for a day in the woods, my Ka-Bar 1210 (USMC) is rarely left behind also.

Yeah, I own 40 knives and two knives under $100 are the ones that are most likely to be carried. But isn't that the way it works?

Mine vary but just lately I seem to take my SwampWarden necker just about everywhere...

And my Bandicoot.....

I hate the saying that your survival knife is the one you have with you because surely all of us on this forum always travel prepared and would never venture out with say a $2 folder in our pockets ?

I love my 4" breeden pathfinder w/red G-10 handles. Its always in the sheath on my belt.

I use it to cut up fruit so much is has a funny looking patina now....

Also this is a pic of my sheath after i sanded the extra leather off of it. Some of you saw the before pic and it does look alot nicer now....

Looks good with the Patina and that sheath looks much better now as well !!!!

If a situation arises, then the survival knife I'll have will be the knife I have on me at the time. Since I carry the same set every single day from the time I get up until I go to bed, I always know exactly what it will be.

R.A.T. Cutlery RC-4
Leatherman Charge TTi with firesteel and mini maglite
R.A.T. Cutlery Izula Prototype Neck Knife.

If you ever see me outside my home, you are garanteed that I have, at least, these 3 things on me. It's better to carry your "survival" setup 24/7 then to hope that you have it with you on the day you need it.
