Your thoughts on the GEC #55 Hound Tooth???

Doug, no photos from me as ever due to no camera.... But I can tell you from ownership. The 57 Half Whitt has almost totally sunk joint on the Wharncliffe but the 55 Houndstooth does NOT have this desirable feature, probably because its Wharncliffe works from the smaller bolster, the reverse end of the 57 frame, less bolster to cover the joint. However, it's an exceptionally nice knife, heavier spring than the Half Whitt but about the same as my CASE SBJ. Feels far better in the hand than that knife and the Hound has a really good long Wharncliffe.

Sunk or getting cold feet?:D

Thanks, Will

Thanks Will, though I may still be in trouble, because I think the coffee house acrylic on the 57 is gorgeous!

You're not wrong there Doug, it looks fantastic gear! Modest pull on those Half Whitts, well modest by GEC measure...

Here ya go Doug

Question....

The name Hound Tooth. Is it a play on the name Dog Leg?

Thank you Steve and Jeff for the photos. That is a bit high off the frame for my taste, which is probably for the best as I don't really need to buy another just now.

Interesting point. I think it was just GEC's inventiveness with knife names....the Tidioute versions have a nice shield that looks like a dog tooth! The 55 is after all just a reversed version of the 57 Whittler/Half-Whitt frame. Curiously, the Houndstooth has half stops, the Half-Whitt none (much prefer no half-stops as smoother, the HW is single-spring)

So I think I have decided this will be my next knife. The question is though, liner lock or no? i have never used a liner lock on a traditional and not a huge liner lock fan on my newer knives. Do you guys prefer this model with a liner lock or no? Since this knife has a half stop, is the liner lock actually needed if using the knife properly? I am all for safety but not a huge fan of how it looks

My Buck Vantage Select has a liner lock and it's fine with no problems but I haven't put it through any spine whacking. :p All I know is it cuts and it's comfortable in the hand, but as far as the gec 55, I think I would go with the lockback on that one.

I wasn't sure about the liner lock on my 55 before I purchased it on-line, but must say that I haven't minded it at all. If anything, it seems to give it a bit of additional old-school charm. Not something I'd want on all my knives, but again, quite like it on the 55.

I really like mine, so much so that I decided I didn't need the Ken Coats custom swayback I also had. It does have a strong spring but can still be pinched open.

The #55 is my absolute favorite and is with me 24/7 since the day i got it in mid-June. It's slim and just fits the hand like a worn bar of soap.

Jerry,

Mine is the LL version with Spear blade. It was the only one available at the time. It's not a problem, doesn't bother me when in hand. If using the knife properly you don't need one, but it's not a hindrance either. I suppose it could save you an emergency room run if you did happen to have it close on you if you were doing something unorthodox with it.

The 55 is a fantastic knife I can say, so you'll love it. The heft and feel in hand is just perfect to me. It resides in my right front pocket 24/7 since the day it arrived. It will probably be sitting on the nightstand beside me as I whisper "rosebud" on my final day also...

The Autumn Gold covers are about as good as it gets. Mine is the LL too. Takes a little practice closing it one handed ;-)

Nice looking Warnie you have LeoGreg, I can see one in my future, they've been growing on me more and more. Didn't care for them initially but now I like them.
