Your top 10 necessary gadgets...

I am constantly looking to shrink and or lighten the stuff I carry around daily. Well, except for the knife and watch, paradoxically these tend to be on the large side.

Things will change soon, as I've just about decided to trade the phone and notepad in for a small PDA/phone combination (Treo 300). The Treo is the first PDA/phone combo that is of a size I can live with.

Oh, the GPS is not really an EDC, but I would be lost without it. Literally...

So, here's the list:

-a watch
-a folding knife
-a phone, smaller the better
-small notepad
-photon 3 light (on keychain)
-telescopic or bullet space pen
-keychain

not carried on person:
-GPS (in car)
-mp3 player
-very small shortwave radio

Here are the items that I consider to be Necessities.

It's an Uncle Henry 897UH "signiture" model. One long (sorta) blade. One sheepfoot or wharncliff blade. And one ? blade. I got it pretty sharp on crock sticks. It doesn't look like new, riding with the light and change in left front, but does a nice job. Was right at 20 bucks at Wally World.

Here is a list of my "always" gear:

1) 4" Cold Steel Voyager Tanto, plain edge
2) Leatherman PST2
3) Mini-Maglite
4) Schrade Tough Chip (The Shears come in handy)
5) Buck Model #704
6) Keys
7) Cell Phone
8) Ballpoint pen
9) Wallet
10) Handkerchief
11) Pocket Watch

The following are items I occasionally carry to augment the above mentioned essentials:

Leatherman Crunch
Zippo Cigarette Lighter (I don't smoke, but know people who do)
Simmons Compact 8x25 Binoculars

Here I list what I actually find that I have needed each day: (presupposes clothes and shoes, glasses, etc.)

1 wallet (with sewing kit, cards, bit-o-cash, magnifier, etc.)
2 keys - on belt hook. The hook itself is more essential than most of the keys on it. (Additional unlisted goodies include mil canopener, whistle, watch, etc.)
3 hanky. Sometimes 2.
4 keyring pen, usually clipped on beltloop (with photon 2 yellow)
5 knife, currently warncliffe mirage
6 swisstech screwzall
7 Arc AAA white clipped on either keyring or beltloop
8 cellphone
9 nailclippers on keyring (also work as flushcutters sometimes)
10 Vic midnight manager with pen and light and scissors and drivers, sort of a universal backup.

Things that I feel are missing:
I have ordered some sliver grippers, thanks to all who posted about them. They may break into the top 10, especially since my SAK has none.

I want some small plyers/wrench in pocket or ring. Have a sebertool, but it will not stay clipped to ring, almost lost it 3 times or more. Sits in the drawer now. Want to try the swisstech one. The 2.5 inch Craftsman adjustable wrench has come in handy several times, but gets too many strange looks, and is not big enough. A 3 or 4 inch visegrip has appeal....

Seriously considering the one-hand Trailmaster. With the "double" opening resistance could it be a one hander that is "inherently safe" in tip-up carry?

BM 710

8. coffee cup (should be #1)

9. breath mints (due to #8)

10. no palm pilot or gun for me at work ...

My daily loadout consist of :

2. knife- Either Emerson Commander, Spyderco Police, or Tim Wegner
3. wallet
4. belt and buckle
5. truck keys

Grommit:
"I want some small plyers/wrench in pocket or ring."

You should look into a Leatherman Minitool. I have used one for months now and I love it. I was an "all the bells and whistles-type of guy" so I carried a Swisstool, or Supertool, or Powerpliers. I still love these and use them; but the Minitool is so small and handy it's always on me. So now I carry other small tools and a pocket knife on my person to compliment the Minitool: works great.

Have you tried a Leatherman Juice? Maybe an S2. Pliers, 4 screwdrivers, scissors and can opener. It's not heavy and pretty compact. About $40 at Walmart.
