When I lived where I couldn't have a gun, I kept a rodent 9 or a SOG fixation dagger at hand. There wasn't enough room for a baseball bat.

With the rodent 9 I figured any way or how I connected would hurt. Even if I missed with the edge it would be like getting hit with a heavy steel bar.

The sog was cheap (free to me,) long, light, and sharp. I thought it almost perfect for a one time use item.

Not a knife, but I used to keep an old hatchet and crowbar in my car. I didn't intend on it being a weapon, but it would probably be better than anything I could have improvised.

i keep an axe handle under the bed, a winkler tomahawk in a shadow box on the wall and a katana on a stand over my dresser drawers all in my room... so i guess i don't have to think about which knife.

...however, there is a knife laying around on 3/4 of the furniture in my livingroom so i can play with them watching tv, so i guess i'm giving them a sporting chance.

These are what I would consider "battle" knives

Kukris, large bowies, and in general any blade that can chop a hand in one swing, or slash a neck, stab the heart...:D

Which Winkler do you have Rusty? I lust after the compact RnD...

I'll go and get my large screwdriver.

The large kitchen knife is a very good choice. A stiff thinner long filleting style knife would be my choice from the kitchen drawer.
There is something to say about a large threatening big flashy blade which might be a deterrent on looks alone. Standing at the top of the stairs with a huge machete might be enough to scare them off. A good fire pocker with a heavy end would be effective. Deterrence is far better than a fight.
Most of the world requires a reason to use force, so whatever you grab make sure there is reason it was so readily available.
Most break ins are when the occupants are asleep or watching TV, so having weapons around the house is just giving the thief a weapon.

Those that actually last fought with cutting weapons used swords and cutlasses, knives were desperation. Though the big bowie is popular in American folk law even in the American Civil War few actually used them for fighting. A kukri requires little skill and works in many ways, but most are on the too heavy side.
I'm in favour of pointy things. Bayonets are good, best on the end of a rifle. Slashing swords went out of favour regularly to pointy swords. The following is an example of what Victorians often carried for self defence:

I don't live in America but if I did I'd use a Glock.

I have at least one gun in every room of our house so if I'm down to a knife I'm probably in trouble but I guess I could use this

That Treeman!!!

What would you select out of your collection to protect your family and property if you had to use a blade. Let's limit it to your top 5.

I wouldn't be reaching for a knife to defend my family and I, and hopefully It never comes to a knife.. But if it did

$40 and works great for limbing felled trees

Because it is basically a Cutlass, of my big blades, my first choice would be my Cold Steel Frontier Bowie. Of my knives in the 5"-7" range, it would be a 3 way tie between my Blackjack Model 7, my D2 Cold Steel Leatherneck, or my 3V Master Tanto.

Dayum!

Alright, who let Mr. Paranee play? If this is a game, I guarantee you we'll all lose to that bloke.

Joe, I loved your last whip video.
