Hey, first post, very interesting forum you guys have got here.

What are you guys using for a good woods chopper/trail clearer? After a couple of years of not using firewood im back to going out on my land and getting some. I used to use this cheapy full tang mini katana that somehow slipped thru the cracks of odd useless stuff that Bud K but i decided that i didnt like a 2 handed chopper and gave it to my father who always lusted after it.

I have been using a cold steel kukri machete which im fairly impressed with, especially so for the 12 bucks i paid for it, but im in the throes of massive gotta-have-more-knives-itis and kinda went on a mini spree recently buying a Gerber Bear Whoever Parang, a Hibben IV forged machete, another Cold Steel Kukri Machete(because you cant just have one of a knife this cheap right?) and a Cold Steel Heavy Machete that has recently been used in place of my missing house hatchet for firewood.

So you guys using anything interesting? Im lusting after a Fiddleback Forge Bowlegged Chopper at the moment and im starting to more appreciate the shorter choppers vs the 22" Blackie Collins machete i was using before.

I Love choppers!!! They always make good thread topics:thumbup:
You would be very smart to get the bow legged and you'd make me super jealous as I too am lusting for one. All the reviews and feedback I've seen sing praise of it and Andy is a good guy to deal with, but if you don't want to spend $350 getting it, you should make your 2nd Fiddleback choice one of his machetes. They come as small as 12 inche blades I think, and a few larger sizes too and only cost $100. Also check out the Habilis Tools 'Wood Beast', its small but once you see it you'll see its potential for your needs.
Next would be the BHK machetes which are getting great reviews and are also around $100
Anything from Condor from the Hudson bay all the way to the golok(though I'd get either the Boomslang,Speed Bowie or Thai enep) their stuff ranges from $35-70
Of course a woodsman pal is classic along with an ontario machete or even an RTAK or Esee Junglas
And then there's the Hoodlum, Tops anaconda or Armageddon, Ka-bar Pestilence chopper, cutlass, kukri, or grass machete or check the exchange area or ebay for old vintage 'lamb splitters'
Finally there is my two new custom chopper which are very high quality and only $285 each(from 2 separate makers)

Although I do little chopping, I have no trouble using the BK7 for small stuff. Larger wood I pack a wire saw.

Gotta' love billhooks! :cool::thumbup:

I use an Ontario SP8 but that's all I have usedother then the Gerber Gator machete which requires too much effort for too little work. I've been impressed with the Ontario.

The wife got in a little accident and her rear car door was crumpled. I used the SP8 to pry it open and since there's no tip I had no worry of breaking it. It performed awesome and then put on a new door from the wreckers on.

I have quite a few that I use. My most used this past year has been a Culberson Golok, ESEE Junglas, and a Koyote Bushbeater. Condor Kumunga and Golok come up, too. In Spring I used mostly a Condor bolo for chopping, though. (it was my newest blade at the time :) )

Indeed we do :D:D

I put a proper convex on it the other day - the one it came with was a bit approximate. It is shaaaarrp now

Got to say I am liking the Beckers though :) I'd also like to get a decent kukri, but the choice just confuses the hell out of me

BK9 for me as well.

That said, most of the "work" is done by my Corona saw instead.

I'd love to try a KaBar Cutlass machete as a chopper, as well as someday a busse.

The Bowlegged is sorta expensive and i probably dont need it as my $12 Kukri does a great job(and makes a scarily effective throwing knife, albeit a monster one) but dammit i still want one. Or 2.

Or 27.....

right now my becker BK9 or my CS kukri machete. I'd like to get an ontario SP8 and maybe a 12" machete. I also just ordered a CS special forces shovel. I figured it would be good for taking in on trails where other people are likely to be that way I can have a decent chopper but not scare people with my big knife. bit of a "stealth chopper"
