Sorry about that we must have been typing at the same time. The edge does look like a mirror after the 8000 mesh ultra ultra fine but I still stropped it on leather afterwards.

I noticed more chipping in D2 blades after sharpening as compared to others, which makes sense considering the scale of forces applied at the edge when honing such large carbides.
I would like to try the 8000. Sounds like a winner.
From what I have heard the D8EE starts out giving a roughly 4000 grit finish, and some people have lapped then on finer diamond stones to get it to polish better. That can't be good for the life of the stone, but brings it much closer to the advertised grit rating.

What is that - finer diamond stones? But even 4000 is enough for edge being mirror polish.
Thanks, Vassili.
I broke mine in with a spyderco in S30V. They break in pretty quick usually a few hours of sharpening. When I got the stone it almost felt like a 4000 grit but after an hour of use it felt like glass.I believe people have used 1200 grit stones to lap the 8000 grit D8EE, but the consensus seemed to be most were happier with high end waterstones to get that 8000 grit finish. But, if you like diamonds and want to go finer than 1200 it seems like a good choice.
