ZDP-189 is it any good?

Sorry about that we must have been typing at the same time. The edge does look like a mirror after the 8000 mesh ultra ultra fine but I still stropped it on leather afterwards.

Where did you get it from? I just search the Web for 'dmt 10" ultra fine' - nothing found!

Thanks, Vassili.

Thanks, D8EE works better, they also have D8XX. I found that DMT works better then EzeLap, more aggressive. Looks like their advertisement about use of microcrystalline is true. Unfortunately they do not have 11" benchstones.

Thanks, Vassili.

I took my zdp caly jr and 13C26 Kershaw JYD to WLC for two weeks. I don't know what happened to the caly, as it was used for light cutting in garrison (kept in a cargo pocket while on the field problem), but it had a visibly ragged edge after some sharpening on Spydeco Profiles. The JYD lost shaving sharpness in the field, but I can't tell if it was from wear or corrosion, as it was spotted with rust.

The caly had chipped prior to my leaving when a friend of mine used it to cut through some light gauge wire. I find it sharpens as easily as other steels with the equipment I have, but chipping under load is getting to be an issue for this knife moreso than others I have sharpened in the same fashion. I noticed more chipping in D2 blades after sharpening as compared to others, which makes sense considering the scale of forces applied at the edge when honing such large carbides.

It is unfortunate that people simple don't put the right steels in knives and that most people don't even know what high performance actually means. A lot of people are impressed when a knife cuts a piece of hemp rope and shaves or chops through a piece of 2x4 and the edge isn't damaged.

I took a piece of mild steel and measured its cutting ability through 128 pieces of hemp. I showed how even really cheap knives like CRK&T AUS-4 blades could cut massive cardboard and still shave. Now what does this say about how a tool steel should behave if properly ground and hardened.

I would like to try the 8000. Sounds like a winner.

It will be really interesting to try. If blade will perform after this better or same as after 1200 then my hypothesis may be right and it is more due to method of polishing which may very well eliminates teeth one way or another. After 8000 (3 microns) it will be mirror polish (wich is just 9 vs 3 microns).

Thanks Vassili

nope, and I had it clipped to my PT shorts several times and was completely drenched in sweat during the STX.

Vassili, Sorry about the paragraph thing. Every time I try it on my computer, it stacks the sentences anyway. Nothing I do seems to make it work! I tried a full sized 1200 diamond bench stone while at the Loveless shop a few weeks ago. I liked it. I have a worn out diamond extra fine hone here, along with several others, It they needs replacing. It is by Hewlett jewlstik. Ive been looking for another one. I can fine the coarse, and med. two sided ones but not the three sided with the fine. Mike

From what I have heard the D8EE starts out giving a roughly 4000 grit finish, and some people have lapped then on finer diamond stones to get it to polish better. That can't be good for the life of the stone, but brings it much closer to the advertised grit rating.

What is that - finer diamond stones? But even 4000 is enough for edge being mirror polish.

Thanks, Vassili.

I believe people have used 1200 grit stones to lap the 8000 grit D8EE, but the consensus seemed to be most were happier with high end waterstones to get that 8000 grit finish. But, if you like diamonds and want to go finer than 1200 it seems like a good choice.

I broke mine in with a spyderco in S30V. They break in pretty quick usually a few hours of sharpening. When I got the stone it almost felt like a 4000 grit but after an hour of use it felt like glass.

Thanks to you I got D8EE today - 8000 3 microns, and also D8XX - 120 120 microns! Will try it tomorrow.

Thanks, Vassili.

This is my Endura after I reground it, make edge more then twice thinner:

I used belt sander, but I hope I will be able to do this with 120 Stone.

After I made it thinner I resharpen it to smaller angle and curve out shoulders. It is pretty nice edge now, one which really match this beautiful steel.

Thanks, Vassili.
