ZDP-189, the new super steel?

The burr doesn't make it harder, it makes it more annoying to the end user.

Any annoyance is a difficulty, and any difficulty makes a task harder.

I think nozh2002 was responding to the "harder to sharpen" aspect of Sal's statement - at least that is my interpretation of the reply, since his reply discussed sharpening and not manufacture.

Any difficulty in manufacture is reflected in the cost to the consumer - one of the reasons some of Spyderco's smaller joys cost so much in comparison to their physical size.

They are difficult to work with, hard on wheels, tight tolerances to heat treat, expensive to purchase and process, Harder to sharpen, etc.

Yes they are both premium steel, I agree. But not hard to sharpen, we discussed it already many times - better steel - less burr - more easy to sharpen.

Yes nozh was in fact doing what he has many times. Disagree with ones that know much more than he. Sal got his start in sharpening(IIRC), so when Sal tells us something is harder to sharpen I tend to believe him over others(esp nozh).

I don't know how I kept my knives sharp thru all those years working as a meatcutter, and owning a game processing buisness without the wisdom of ole Nozh:p

I think we're back to the definition of "harder", and then the definition of "definition"?

It's an interesting thread on ZDP and many reading can learn from you guys.

Vassili and I don't always agree. That's ok. we both have our understandings, probably a little different. He whittles hair, I shaved with a straight razor. "All good, just different".

I've been meaning to try that one of these days.

zdp is one of the newer steels, it certainly is not absolutely new. there are thousands of zdp knives

From what I remember steels which came from knife manufacturers not custom - latest was CPM M4 by Benchmade, before it was CPM S110V by Kershaw, CPM 125V by some Italian company, before that Duratech 20CV by SOG and ZDP189 by W&H (and Spyderco makes it available for everyone little bit later). As I remember Microtech come with CPM S90V model first before ZDP189.

It was few not top level steels in between - Sandvic 14c28?, MIM440C, OU31...

So ZDP189 is not newest. I think CPM S110V is newest and most exotic in all terms. I hope to see more models and more established HT for it for knife applications.

Thanks, Vassili.

Actually ZDP189 was introduced by Roakstead first, but in Japan. I hope to see other Roakstead steel here too YXR-7.

Sal, I've shaved with my Caly Jr. ZDP with a .005" high hollow grind several times, does that count like shaving with a straight razor? It leaves a nice, irratation free finish, though you really have to be careful with the point on it.

That's pretty cool Vassili, Thanks! It seems to be the Beretta Harsey as it is sold here, but instead of S30V, it's S125V. Pretty cool knife. There are probably not many of them, considering the problems that steel has given knifemakers, and the small amount made.

Sal has a S125V millie, IIRC.

I recall seeing a thread about a knifemaker in Europe that uses Crucibles MPL-1 ( 46% carbide volume stainless as opposed to S125V 28%).

It gets done. Then there was Farid, who was making knives out of T1, T15 etc. He seems to have stopped doing that, now making Rambo type knives.

I don't know how many S125V knives Phil Wilson has made but he gave up on it due to chipping and other troubles.

I still have my piece of S125V which I plan on finishing someday. I was supposed to have sent it out to be waterjet cut to my specs but I've had other things on my plate that take precedence.

It's interesting seeing them as there can't be all that many around. A mere handful.

Hi Mike,

When I shaved with knives, I usually cut the tip off. I kept stabbing myself, especially when shaving around my nose. :o
