Zdp-189?

Hiroaki Ohta managed to get his hands on some 3mm laminated ZDP-189, now I'm on his list for this pattern in my favorite blade steel :D This will be a long three months but I think the wait will be worth it...

It's great when a plan comes together. Can't wait to see it Chip!

Make sure you post pictures when it comes. I'm officially jealous!

I think you would have to find a Japanese custom maker for that. IIRC, ZDP189 is not sold outside of Japan.

That's close Frank. To date, KAI has been the only company allowed to import ZDP into the USA. Otherwise, ZDP-189 is usually ground, and always heat-treated in Japan.

William Henry is a US company with US production of ZDP blades. IIRC KAI makes knives in the US with ZDP for AGRussell as well.

WH has publicly announced that their ZDP blades are processed in Japan. IIRC it was an interview bit from Blade Show some years ago?

I ordered a Sakai Trekker. I am going to knock the ZDP blade out of it and attach it to a custom SAK with Ti handle slabs. The fact that the SAK is put together with screws should simplify the task. Sadly I can't post pictures any more, because they are declared to be invalid attachments and are promptly deleted.

I don't think I've seen any Slip joint makers using Hitachi's ZDP-189. I know it can be run incredibly hard. I've got a few WH non-traditionals that are marked as HRC 67. They are a san mai construction. I'd like to experience a slip joint with that steel myself.

Are they clad zdp-189 with say veg-10? Have you noticed any pros/cons from the cladding. I'm looking to get a rockstead but the newer shins/tai are clad. There are some using only zdp-189 but smaller models. I'd like some info before dropping $1,000+. Thanks in advance.

Anything I've seen in ZDP-189 has been san mai, which is similar if not equal to laminated or clad. The ZDP-189 core is kept thin to allow some flex. The laminated sides, which are softer, increase the blade width to provide some additional strength and flex. I've never heard of or seen any delamination but I'm sure it's possible. If the knife you're mentioning isn't traditional this is probably not the place to discuss it.

Peregrin... Is Ohta using 3 mm 189 in that traditional pattern? Seems way too thick.

Chip ordered it. See the quote above. I can't wait to see and hear about it.

I actually talked him into doing a whittler pattern (swell center), the main blade will be 3mm ZDP-189 and the secondaries will be ATS-34 (couldn't find zdp thin enough). He said he is starting on it, so hopefully I should be able to get some progress pics up soonish.

Can't wait to see Chip, Ohta-san's work is underrated and a beauty to behold. ZDP 189 will be the cherry on top.

I would love to see the result of this as well. I love Ohta's work and one of his designs in ZDP-189 could be amazing aesthetically and performance wise.

ZDP-189 will develop some funky patina, unsure as to whether or not that may be the reasoning behind using a laminate.

ADP-189 is "stainless". But, there have been some reports of ZDP-189 being prone to rust spots. So the lamination might be to prevent corrosion. However, alloys with very high hardness, such as ZDP-189, are often laminated to improve toughness, so the blades are not prone to chipping.
