I do give the edge to the ZT for hard use though, it's built like a tank and will definitely be a knife I go to as a companion for a fixed blade.
I couldn't agree more. If a folding tank is what you need and the choice is between the 0562 and the Southard, the ZT is the knife for you. If I'm going to carry a fixed blade, however, the last thing I need is a folder that pretends to be one. A decent multi-tool would be a far better companion for a fixed blade than an overbuilt folder in my world.

..Additionally, while the lock face of the Southard has been carbidized/hardened without a replaceable steel insert you have the issue of wear. How practical that is will depend on usage.

While I agree with your statement, I always chuckle a bit at this topic because I bet the average knife nut on Bladeforums doesn't keep a knife long enough to wear out the lock face on a high quality RIL.

Or, like me, have so many knives they rotate through that the odds of wearing any of them out lie somewhere between slim and none. ;)

May we all live long enough to wear out the locking mechanisms on all of our folders. :D

Big fan of both brands. The 0562 wins, for me. I'll even go with the Elmax/G-10 version instead of the CF.

The weight is an absolute non-issue for me. When I'm not carrying my 0566, my next most carried blade is an 0550. Neither one of them is any kind of burden, and the 0562 falls in the same weight range.

With weight aside, ergos and blade grind push me toward the ZT.

Agreed. Practically speaking a carbidized lockbar face is more than good enough. Still, many are hesitant and only want titanium lockbars with the replaceable hardened stainless steel insert.

Surely. We take our hobby serious like may others. The AR15 community can be even worse! People are ridiculed for buying a rifle without a "Mil-spec" buffer tube even though it's just for home defense or range shooting. Talk about a community that can go overboard..

I like flippers, even though I only have a few. Spyderco is my favorite production brand, but I'm gonna give the edge to ZT. They pretty much have the market cornered for production flippers. I owned a Southard for a few days and was unimpressed. I think the Southard is also a little overpriced.

In my case if the 562 flips as well as the 560 then it flips open better than the southard.

I just got the ZT and boy does it flip good, I can't get my southard to flip well anymore for whatever reason.
We will see which one I like more within the next few days, but so far I'm really liking the ZT.
Hopefully the ELMAX performs well, it seems like there was a lot of problems with edge burning when they came out.

Here are some side by side shots for those curious along with a para1 and a military.
Also I forgot to take pictures but the thickness looks to be exactly the same.

The ZT you have in these pictures is the 0560BW with Elmax and G-10! The poll is a comparison with 0562CF with M390 and Carbon Fiber.

That would be the well loved ZT 0560, as opposed to the ZT 0562, which is a very recent release.

My god people your talking like an ounce or two is gonna break you

No...just will make me leave it at home. If my large Sebbie and Zaan come in at five ounces or a bit less, why should I lug that extra ounce? If you've been around a while, you know that it DOES make a difference.
I've had lots of ZT's; lots of CRK's. Both are excellent.
The ONLY ZT that I have right now is my 0770CF in M390...right at three ounces. Now, THAT is a ZT that I will carry. I've sold or traded perhaps ten or more ZT's in the 0350, 0360, 0550, and 0560 series. Very nice folders; very heavy-duty capable, heavier than I will carry as EDC. I'm a casual carry guy...not a heavy-duty necessary guy.
Pretty simple, in my case.

I'd love to participate in this conversation by actually HAVING MY PRE-ORDERED 0562cf...!

Zt 562cf. I'd even prefer the g10 over a southard in my opinion. That Zt is just a tank of a knofe seriously. If you use your knofe everyday I don't see how you can go wrong with Zt. If you just want a cool lil knife to show. Get the southard. Imo

I have 2 562cf's arriving tomorrow so I will see what all the fuss is about and give my two cents on the comparison.

Check your blade when it's closed to make sure no play. At first I didn't realize but after carrying it. It wiggled in my pocket and drive me nuts. I sent it back in. Sadly it came back with a short blade

Check my post on the zero tolerance 562cf problem!!! Don't want to say bad things on Zt but just my real life experience so far. And I'd still go get another Zt right now

I voted for ZT. But... Southard is $200 on Amazon.com, free shipping NOW... 0562CF? Good luck finding one NIB with reasonable price.
