Zero Tolerance Liner Lock Closures?

Zt won't be making any improvements in lock geometry. To them this is all fake news.

Shit. I think my ZTs are all fake. I’ve learned from YouTube that ZT doesn’t make knives to cut things, and that the locks fail.

Guys... all of my ZTs cut things, and none fail spine whack tests.

This is especially alarming for me because I’m actually from Tualatin, Oregon. If the local shops are selling fakes this close to KAI HQ, many of you are probably also carrying fakes!

Here’s a pic of my “0562”, which I bought when they were first released. I don’t know how the fakes got here so fast, but they must have. They even forgot to screw up the ELMAX.

Should anyone have a defective ZT 0392 please ship it to me for proper disposal. ;)

Just finally sold my excellent example since I never carried it and there have been several on the exchange lately. Really bad timing to try and move these however. I was surprised how long mine sat at a discount, even with the bad sentiment about ZT products lately.

What a stellar company. I spend 2.5k a year in knives. Pity they dont care about my concerns. They were my favorite company, but I won't be purchasing anymore.

I have three ZTs. 0450,0566, and 0801. All failed. The 0450 had the worse fail rate. The 0801 had the best fail rate (I know..sounds counter intuitive). But bottom line is, they all failed. Moderately light spine whacks to a roll of duct tape. And I so wanted a 0562cf to be my next folder :(

This statement is so ridiculously false that I'm surprised you even typed it.

Besides, with YouTube's obsession with spine whacks and lock-rock (and the internet in general), I doubt there are many people who are unaware of either term.

We can agree to disagree. Outside of forums and true knife people(which I have yet to encounter one outside of forums) these things just aren’t discussed.

I consider myself a knife guy but up until a month or so ago I didn’t know what lock rock was. I must not watch the same videos as everyone else. Two of the biggest YouTube knife guys apostlep and nick shabazz have not mentioned spine whacks or done them in their videos that I have seen.

The only time I’ve seen spine whacks are on some crazy torture test video which I have no interest in doing.

No one is saying that all ZTs have unsafe locks. It most likely is a small percentage of knives that have bad locks but the fact that so many people in this thread have commented that they tested their knives and they failed is disheartening. ZT claims their knives should not fail via spine whack. By their own qc measures there has been many a knife fail.

To me what’s even more frightening is that they don’t fix the issue when they’re sent into warranty.

I’d love to hear someone else’s warranty experience after sending it in for this failure. Either good or bad because so far the two people that have sent them in have not had their knives fixed.

I say grab one while they’re still around. The 562 is a great knife but it’s been around a while so they could discountinue it anytime. I have a couple versions and they are awesome. When it’s open you’re index finger will be right under the flipper, so unless you’re the type that uses a knife as a hammer, shovel, etc, it won’t let you down.

There aren’t actually a lot of posters reporting issues. It’s a small number of posters reporting failures. Multiple posts from them, as is normal in a discussion thread, create the illusion of a larger issue.

ZT only has 5 fans, Kershaw has about 15. Everyone else hates them—but it doesn’t help that their fans badmouth them/start rumors to lower prices on the exchange. The worst part about the first vid is that he says “he wouldn’t know how to make a lock fail on purpose” which is a red flag for a genetic defect of sorts.

Me neither. At least not until they show something new. The 0470 with just CF on the show side is lame. They can keep their spring runs.

It should be pointed out that 1 of the dudes on the Knifenuts Podcast also sustained a severe injury from a brand new ZT. Everyone seems to be affected by this.

If a Zt is to be discontinued soon, then one should absolutely wait until it is discontinued so that he can buy at a significantly discounted price. It's not like discontinued ZTs will all disappear overnight.

True; I think the 0804cf has been disco’d for 9 months and it’s still available at some sites; also the 0909.

I will probably still buy a ZT once in a while if the design appeals to me, but most likely it will be for light tasks and as a toy in my couch rather than hard use folders.

Yeah, literally ones of knives have shown issues. One single report of injury during use. This isn't a massive, widespread problem, and it isn't something that will cause a safety concern to the overwhelming majority of people with knives it affects (ZT predominantly makes frame locks, which are highly unlikely to fall in this manner during use), so there's mostly talk and bandwagon hating. I've used even my 0630 for heavy duty cutting on nearly inch thick cardboard, not even a suggestion of potential lock failure, and it closed on a moderately light spine whack. The blade has gotten stuck and I've pulled it out by pulling back and up, putting moderate pressure on the lock, and it held just fine. If it isn't a liner lock affected, it's very unlikely an issue, and if it is you can most likely remedy it by bending the lock in a little bit.

Yep. And 0804 can be had for $200 while 0909 a bit over $100.

That’s true, I was very surprised to see the 0804 come back again. Hell even the 0300 series just came back for a short time. So, h never know I guess. Wish they’d bring back the 0600, 0400 or 0200 also

The reason the ZT 0301/3 came back for a short while is because Blue Ridge Knives, a whole sale distributor made the request to ZT.
