I'm ~80% Irish from the Near South Side of Chicago. After learning what I could from a lil man dressed in all green abt the power of the shillelagh, I looked to the Filipinos for the soul of the blade. These two groups never let me down. Even the SEALs look to the Filipinos.
I'm the family outfitter. Tomorrow, I'm outfitting my bro who is a Chicago Cop with a 4 to 5 inch fixed blade and/or karambit. Looking at giving him one of the following:
- Emerson Fixed Karambit
- Gerber LMF II Infantry Fixed 4.84" Combo Blade, Black
- Spyderco Jumpmaster 2 Fixed 4.5" H1 Serrated
- Winkler Knives WK II, Winkler Belt Knife - Exclusive Special Edition CPM 3V - Sculpted Multi Cam G10
If I may make a suggestion I say go for the Winkler. The 3v steel is tough and thus good for the kind of things a non-knife person does to a knife. The edge is less likely to chip. I don’t know if it is coated or not but rust could potentially be an issue.
The karambit is abit too specialized of a knife imho requires more training to take full advantage of. Plus as a cop the karambit or serrated jump master might look a little “aggressive” should he ever need to use the knife infront of civillians or colleagues.
So that leaves the Lmf and winkler and of those two the Winkler is the better knife imho.
I think ZT's are low cost pocket jewelry more so than a working mans EDC so why do you need them to fully lock? If I can pick one up for lower than retail I'm still going to get one to take to the movies or out dinner but it will stay in my draw when it comes to work time like 95 percent of them most likely do. I have seen many knifes on the job sites over the years but I have Never seen anyone break out a Bench made or a ZT to strip cable, cut ropes, or even slice cardboard so the lack of a consistently solid lock up is no problem right? That's why we are not hearing of dozens of people getting injured by them because they are not using the as a working mans EDC, They are just carrying them around work every day. That's the difference in all honesty so a 30 percent lock up 50 percent of the time is no problem at all to them or me for something so Shinny but again when it comes to doing some real work Im grabbing a Kershaw Blur or a spydie and I'll whack that spine all day long without thinking twice.
I think it's time! I was hoping to be the Last. This thread has stripped its threads..
How long before permanent thread locker?
I bet you if it was disclosed those people still wouldn't buy it. That's why it's important zt can fix these. On top of it possibly getting someone hurt. But many here don't consider it a failure.
