Zero Tolerance might be the best thing to ever happen to knives.

I don't disagree that ZT's are great knives, with excellent fit and finish, tough as hell locks, and great customer service. My experience however is limited to the 2 models I own, the standard 0550 and the 0350 in M390. I would consider the Hogue EX01 to be in the same class, and while the EX01 blade is made with a "lesser" steel (154cm), it is a much better slicer than either of the ZT's I own. The difference is entirely due to the blade geometry though, the EX01 is a better blade shape for a slicer when compared to the 0550 anyway. And it seems equally as tough as a ZT (to me) as well.

Who else is doing what they do? They've raised the bar for production knives in a way no other company has ever done. Tolerances that are fantastic, prices that are more than reasonable, materials that are high-end, designs through collaboration with talented and industry-changing makers... Right now, you can buy a titanium framelock bearing flipper made with elmax for at or under $200. You can't get most custom makers to spit on the ground for that much. What does that mean for the custom market? Competition. Better tolerances are needed and better materials are demanded. What does that mean for the production market? The same.

You can use that knife without any fear, because they have a warranty and customer service department that beats almost any you would find in any industry. Slight wiggle if you force it? Fixed for free. No return shipping charge - just get it there. Baton a blade to bits? $30 to replace the blade. You can bet it cost them more than that just in labor to produce the replacement blade, let alone install and ship it.

They make well-priced knives out of good materials at good prices. Always coming out with new, extremely different models. Almost all of their products have become classic standbys. How many times have you seen someone here talking about their 05XX, 03XX, 08xx, or 0777?

I know this is just short of getting on my knees and unzipping ZT's pants, but, really, there's nobody else out there doing what they do. It's strange to see a company offshoot that I initially disregarded as a niche for the overbuilt market turn into a major competitor on it's own, but I'm glad it did. It means good knives at good prices, and it means better workmanship and materials for all of the competitors.

It's a good time to be into knives, I think, to no small degree because of Zero Tolerance.

(Thomas, just PM me and I'll send you my shipping address. I'll take an 0888, please and thank you.)
That sounds great, hopefully they stay that way for ever.
Your description could have been applied to Gerber in the 1980's. Look what has become of them.

Enjoy it while it lasts.

Well put comeup.

They have an awfully impressive starting lineup this year. I mean...I can basically get a Hinderer w/ M390 for half the cost of an actual Hinderer. We're not talking Buck Strider vs. Strider here. ZT builds their stuff for war (not literally but...) so I'm not looking at a Hinderer telling myself 'I gotta dish out the real cash for the real quality'.

My first ZT was a 0200 that had been "waved", and it looks pretty cool, between the handle shape and the wave cut into the top of the blade. The next was a ZT0200KW, and I have a 0550 on the way. So far all the ZT's I've seen have been "lifetime" knives: they'll outlive you, your kids, and probably your grandkids.

Keep it up ZT!

What I really love about ZT is how many awesome collaborations they've made with highly skilled knifemakers. Mick Strider, Rick Hinderer, RJ Martin, Todd Rexford, and now Ernest Emerson.

I'm all up in ZT. Huge fan.

I hope i'm not going to be that guy... but I have to ask, even If i'm not asking anyone. It's great to see all of these new blades coming out, especially a brand new USA made Kershaw.

Now I know the history behind questions like this... but,

The question I have is...

When? Any kind of even half-cheeked ballpark?

Not even for the limited runs - ! When do the production runs start?

I think KAI learned their lesson about making public estimates. Just makes people complain when it winds up being a little late.

Don't worry, bro. You're not that guy. About a million people asked for ETA's since the first looks were put up. I too am foaming at the mouth, but I'll try my best to wait patiently for these bad boys.

I agree with everything the OP said. I can also say that I have carried ZT's and sold ZT's over the past 5 years. While there quality has always been good, lately it has stepped up to unbelievable. The fit and finish on everyone of their knives has just gotten better and better. The past 6 months or so I have seen them making the best knives ever. Even the newer 350's and 301's seem tighter and just a hair bit better in every aspect. I am stoked to see what they do in 2014!

I love my 0350 and can't wait to get my hands on more ZT's. 0560, 0300, and the new fixed blade are on my list.

I agree they're incredible. I just wish they had a few sub 3" blades. I've noticed their shorter blades seem to sell well.

It would be nice if they did a left handed frame lock.

If I may, as I recall from the days of the Kai subforum, designer Jim McNair explained why they don't. Since he himself is a lefty, he would like to have a left-handed lock. However, market forces work against that. Since the percentage of left handed folks is significantly lower than the right handed folks, the cost it takes to retool the machines for left handed parts is unjustifiable. So, it's not for a lack of compassion on lefties, it's just for the unfortunate statistics. They do try to make up for it in the pocket clip placement options, if that's any consolation. Since I'm a righty, maybe I don't understand: is using a frame/liner lock significantly difficult?

STICKTODRUM!!! Hey man, it's an honor! I will trade you that 801 for a Smart Parts Ion, it's pimped I put a clamping feedneck on it too!

Just kidding! That is my ion though, my wife uses one too although, we haven't been to a field in like a year! The problem is the 801 isn't doing it for me, I would just get a small Sebbie or a Sage 2 or the Bradley. There's something about the 566 that really gets me going. But not so different from the hoarding paintball days of '96-'05 that's what's I find really fun about knives, there's just so many different opinions about them and so much variety and ingenuity in different designers coming up with what essential universally does the same thing - cutting things!

The 0801 is ground quite thin down at the edge, and given how high the flat grind is, the whole profile remains pretty thin. It slices more robust material very well, and feels like a fixed blade when deployed. It's quite solid, and cuts very well. Rexford designs a wicked knife, and ZT does a wicked job of putting it together.
