Zero Tolerance S35VN heat treat issues

I haven't had any of the newer s35vn ZTs but the 550 I had performed as expected.

This one was just posted in another thread the other day:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yDxSG6xbl7M

I've also seen one where someone wasn't happy with ZT's Elmax.

If anything, I'm sure isolated incidents can happen with the factory sharpening (too much heat) that you can always "sharpen past" yourself.

I have a hard time giving credibility to any reviewer who starts their review with "kershaw or zt or whatever".

I would think that in the video his sharping techniques would be a factor

This exactly.

I could say the same thing... so maybe the HT is not equal for every blade, and some people just get the softer ones.

So you are professional sharpener too?

And so starts the dissemination... gentlemen you know what the OP is trying to convey. Truth is that in this day and age of modernized manufacturing and production you are more likely to get some variation here and there. With the raw numbers involved, and even with the most stringent quality control, it's going to happen.

In the end nobody's perfect, even the much touted Anne Reeve Knives.

Give ZT a call (good luck getting through) and address your concerns with them (IF you get through). They have a warranty for a reason.

I am not giving my opinion to start a pissing contest about sharping knives i simply have been sharping knivessince i was a kid and i sharpen alot of knives for everyone i know...from fillet and hunting to pocket knives many different brands and alot of cheaper softer metal. For most people a 30-40 dollar knife is all the money they are gonna spend. 85% of everyday people dont carry 150 dollar knives. I remember when i was younger 440c and a good 420 buck was the good stuff.

Well we know what happened to John Davis aka JDavis882 now... He moved to Australia and started a new channel. I know your tricks John!

That is true that Jdavis did start the ZT elmax controversy, and that rumor is Still around today sadly. but this is not the same guy and he is not doing the same thing. people just are not understanding what he has done. iirc Jdavis did what he did to scam a bunch of people to sell him those elmax knives at super low prices, or something like that.

This guy is setting the angle and seeing how well it stands up to his rope cutting tests. the two ZT knives he tested didnt pass where as the kizer s35vn did pass. sure all three have different blade geometry, but the HT surely plays a roll in this too. its not a bad heat treatment, its just soft in comparison, i went over it in my post earlier. keeping the edge stock will ultimately be the better choice for this steel on ZT knives.

Weird, anytime I've called in I've talked to somebody within a short period. I can't ever recall not getting through?

I think the HT is just fine, I've owned multiple 0550's over the years a 0909, 0630, 0620, 0450's etc... I've not had any trouble nor do I think it's too soft. I think it's apparent that the sharpening technique is the deciding factor there.

Cheers,

Justin

Jdavis started all kinds of steel issues with ZT and Spyderco, his credibility is gone.

His true colors sure came through, didn't they?? Nothing but a scam artist with an ego the size of Texas.
I love how he threw a grenade in the room and then went dark. Total joke.

Yep, but the real sad part is his disservice to the knife community is still being felt today.

I've had no issues with s35vn in either my 0909, 0630 or newer CRK large 21...
they all sharpen to a very nice edge and hold it quite well, I really like the steel.
For what it's worth, I've delt with ZT's warranty people a number of times by phone
and email, never had a problem getting through to a customer service rep.

I think ZT is absolutely one of the best knife companies out there.....
But what amazes me is how people come out of the woodwork here defending a knife/company as though there own "Granpappy" founded, smelted or forged it. :barf:

Also very sad is the fact that after starting all that drama about Spydie and CRK, he never sent the knives in to be tested. I recall Sal reached out to him a couple times. He wanted to check the knife out. Never happened.
Egotistical drama queen just looking for views. Seems a couple more YTers are following in his footsteps.
On topic, been carrying, and using, this ZT in s35n for well over a year. I've seen no problems with edge retention at all.
I take what these guys put out with a large grain of salt.

And who is doing that here? I see mostly folks giving their opinion on Zt's s35vn based on their experiences with it.

would be nice if they actually did some testing. opinions dont mean jack. some guy was claiming buck 420HC is better than $500 super steel knives... LMAO all he did was widdle some hard wood with it but no test of the knives he's comparing it too. that in no way is a legit test. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1484048-Buck-tested-and-proven-true-story

I disagree. The opinions of long time, experienced, knowledgeable, and well respected contributing members here means a hell of a lot more than some random youtuber making controversial click bait videos. Testing is just that. At some point, actually using the knife in the real world has to count for something....
