Zero Tolerance vs. Cold Steel

so then, from what cheap steels is san mai II actually made?

I believe it's "San Mai III", and based off of what members here have stated Cold Steel has told them, it is an AUS-8A core and 420 (unknown if it's 420-J, 420-J2, 420HC, or 420 "sub-zero quenched") sides.

Read about it

As you can read from the CS website they don't even say.

Well, according to several members here who have been around since 1998, back when Cold Steel had a forum on this site, Cold Steel stated that San Mai III was composed of an AUS-8A core and 420 sides. Until I hear different from Cold Steel, I'll take the word of those members.

finally i found out what they use on their standard san mai III

THAT SUCKS! Aus8a and it's 500-..i hate them even more now...that's insane

i have a kershaw JYD II limited edition...
cold steel only has titanium frames...the JYD II LE has an ALL titanium handle

cold steel has crappy steels for their San Mai iii...my JYD II le had 410 on the sides and a core steel of SG2...cold steel has micarta, and my JYD II has a CF back spacer, which is awsome...oh and JYD II is less than half of A cold steel san mai III

I think i made a pretty dam good argument

Maybe I'm wrong, but as far I can remeber SM III was 420J+VG1+420J

that's on their VG1 San mai III...then there's just their normal san mai III...either way VG1, really? come one...there VG5, there's VG10
Vg1 is the cheapest in the Vg's

Cold Steal is not a knife maker- they are a marketing machine who farms out production to foreign companies. They will sell any line of BS they can to the gullible hordes of mall ninjas who gobble up their hype. Laminated steel is nothing new or special, just ask the Scandinavians. The idea is to have a hard core of premium steel, with a flexible protective outer layer, not to laminate a middle-low end stainless and call it the greatest thing ever.

Fat conman in bike shorts is full of crap? Now there is a surprise.

That cold steal Black sable is a klunky swap-meet looking knock-off of Brian Tighe's Tighe Stick:

Good! I hope someone from COLD STEEL reads and sees how much they suck. The list just keeps piling up.

Preach it brother, preach it!

You can buy better & you can buy worse than Cold Steel blades. They do have a few decent models..

their cheap knives are absolutely no rip off!

their expensive ones are totally over the top with price vs quality

Zero Tolerance has a silly big list of things going for it, but tops for me is you get Kershaw customer service and a public presence on this forum to ask questions and make complaints.

One of the companies has an excellent reputation for customer service; the other is legendary for its piss poor customer service. Guess which is which.

Yeah, I was surprised when I found out what "san mai 3" is. I mean to someone who doesn't know, "san mai" - sounds great, no? Then I found out it was a laminated mediocre steel.

Why? The only thing I can think of is because the name and the concept sound cool, and they can get away with selling cheap steels.

I think CS knives are of decent quality, though. I think they could do a lot better if they started using better steels. Imagine if the Voyagers used VG-10 or something else. Or the AK-47, or the American Lawman, or the Recon 1 (which would otherwise seem like great knives to me).
