Zing....is Here!!!

Hi Carrot: The Kershaw ZING can definitely be opened as fast as my customs. But, it isn't going to have the same type of action that my customs have. It also doesn't cost $375 !!!!!

The Kershaw ZING can be flipped open with the thumbstud. And I mean FLIPPED!
Can't do that with my customs, because the detent is too strong for that. That's why my customs don't have thumbstuds.

Of course, you can also open the Kershaw ZING using the thumbstud at "normal speed", quitely and discreetly.....Very useful in some situations.

Honestly, there are some people who cannot open my custom ZING. EVERYONE can open the Kershaw ZING. That's a good thing!

So, as the designer of both knives, I can tell you that my original intent was to make the two knives virtually identical in action. And, after a PILE of prototypes, we succeeded. And then we realized that for 95% (or more!) of the factory knife buyers out there, adding the thumbstud and providing multiple opening options made the knife BETTER and MORE USEFUL. And, more fun, IMO.

That's my thinking, anyway. Let us know what you think after you receive the knife from Thomas (nice gesture, BTW).

Best regards,

RJ Martin

Thanks for the info RJ!

Can anyone comment on how the Polymer(I think that' s it) handles feel? How is their texture?

Carrot: My pleasure. The polymer handles have a good looking texture and a nice warm hand-feel. The texture is a very accurate representation of the actual material provided to the moldmaker-Not too severe but not slippery. The pattern chosen assures that the scales won't chew up your pants, and the clip will slide in and out of your pocket smoothly. The edges of the handles are nicely rounded, making the handle easy to hold with no hot spots.

I have a black one and an ornage one to be delivered today!!

I will relate my fun after I open these up and break in!!

Thanks for the info R J. I ordered a Black Zing yesterday and will be here Thursday. The Orange was sold out but I will get one later. The bright colors are a nice change. I always appreciate the input.

Yup, me too, just ordered myself an orange one. Too bad I have to wait atleast a week until it arrives here in Germany:(

I just ordered an Orange Zing as they are now back in stock at the knifecenter. I hope they are as nice as I think they are along with what ever one else has said here. I just could not wait till I get the Black Zing as I wanted the Orange.

I just saw a better picture including the clip and how it looks closed. It looks great. Now, I cannot wait to get both the black and orange Zing! I know patience is a virtue but I don't seem to have that virtue when It comes to knives.

I got my Zing from Newgraham and I am a little disappointed!

The Orange one was stiff but adjusted it and it opens nicely!

The Black one is very stiff and will bust your thumb to open. Is this right?

Will not adjust-must be loctite on it!

Should I send it back?

I think I would give it a special mechanical process that usually helps in these situations: open it a lot. It has a thumbstud, no? I've applied this to good effect on quite a few folders. Note that this is very similar to the CZ-75 DIY trigger job.

And if that doesn't work, then send it back. ;)

By stiff, I'll assume your talking about opening the knife via the thumbstud? Can you flip it?

Thomas-both are very difficult and not even close the the Orange one I got the same day with the black one.

You should be able to open them with a nice flip out of the box!!!

Thomas are there any plans for this to come with a black blade?

I like it a lot but I'd hate to buy one and then have a black blade version come out later.

I'm waiting for a black-bladed version as well--as I stated earlier, I waited for the tanto groove to come out.

and have you broken the knife in yet? (spent a night in front of the tv opening and closing?)

if that doesnt work, you could always take it apart and polish and relube the washers, it usually helps. or send it back to NGK or kershaw, both will take care of you.

No black bladed version slated as of today, but I would imagine there will be variations in the future.

Kershaw sets the detent stout on some. One of my four Blur models was a bit hard to get jump started to open but it worked in in about a week of use. I also found that sanding the grooves down a bit on the stud helped in my case. Not much but just enough to tone them down a notch. A tiny dot of gun grease on the detent can help that along after the break in. Not much though, just a dot on the end of a tooth pick is all you need.

One of the advantages of the flipper design is that the detent ball can be that stout and hold the blade closed like it is supposed to so the folder is not a gravity knife. You can get a much better umpph to get it open using the flipper index finger than you can with the thumb so the tighter ball is not noticed with the flippers so much. I know some folks that bought JYD models and mailed them to me to put thumb studs on so they had both options were still telling me that they found the stud difficult to negotiate and that it was easiest to open the blade using the flipper and the thumb stud both at the same time to get it going and then letting the thumb take over because using the thumb only in the traditional sense was a bit tough to do to get past the detent balls hold.

Some might see this tighter set detent as a drawback from Kershaw but I applaud the effort and feel its the way they are supposed to be. It is a lot harder to flick open one that is set this way and the folder is a lot safer in all modes of carry. New York is famous for confiscating gravity knives and liner locks are a prime target so to me this is a big plus in the industry.
