Zip-ties on knives

Please forgive my blinding ignorance yet again, but what purpose do all the zip-ties on folders serve? Not being facetious. I really want to hear what the benefits are of having the zip-tie on the blade like that. I don't currently own a folder other than SAK's, so I can't experiment and see whether I like the idea or not. I assume it makes opening the blade easier, but it looks like it would be constantly catching on stuff both in the pocket and out. Is the intention to catch the blade on the material while pulling the knife from the pocket so it opens by itself (like an Emerson Wave)?

That is exactly its purpose

Cheap wave

It is as annonying and catchy on things as an Emerson Wave notch is, and you don't hear many Emerson owners complaining about their waves, do you?

It is inexpensive, reliable, and removable.

That's one of its main advantages. Don't like it? Take it off
Too catchy? Shorten it
Not enough grab? Make it bigger

And saves your blade from regrinding or moddifying in an irreversible way

Like Spydercos: it may not look sexy, or it may appear goofy, but it works perfectly and flawlessly for what it was designed

Well argued, Peacent. I still think they're ugly. :p

Definitely a 'to each his own' sort of thing. I, myself, find the Wave (TM) not to my liking, at all. But, for those who find the technique useful, a zip-tie is definitely an easy way to adapt many knives to allow that. As said, it's an easy way to find out if it's for you.

Plus, Emerson doesn't have as many cool designs as Spyderco, and when you can 'wave' it, more power to you!

I too think its ugly, but I have been known to do it myself from time to time. It works pretty well for the most part, but some models are better than others.

Sypdercos look perfectly fine and often quite good, why you dissing the spydiehole? :p

They act like a makeshift thumbstud mostly on spyderco knives which don't need them because that have a hole. I think it's ugly and ghetto looking, and if you don't like the opening hole go buy something else. It's already one hand opening so just take it or leave it.
I tried it out just to see what the big deal was and it sucked.

As for zip-ties, I have owned a few knives where I put zip-ties on so I could use them with a wave-like feature, eventually I took them off because they were bulky and ugly and the speed of opening didn't really increase. The act of pulling a knife out of my pocket and using the spydie-hole or thumbstud was just a fast as pulling it out and having the blade open and then shifting my grip on the open knife to use it.

I find them to have less worth than detraction, but I also don't have any assisted knives and like the slow manual-opening best anyway, so I'm not the one who would get use out of them in the first place.

Sorry, not a thumbstud. It is an improvised Emerson Wave. You are doing it for the wrong reason. [emoji6]

Well that makes it even worse, who needs a ghetto makeshift version of what is already a silly gimmick.
I obviously don't like waves, but that's me. If you like them that's fine , you just won't catch me with a silly pocket snagger on my knives.

Lol...... Silly gimmick...Ok bud.

Now you can tell us no one needs anything more than a Buck 110 or 482.

Enjoy your knife hobby, I'll enjoy mine.[emoji106]

It doesn't just open your knife...it also opens your beer.
Especially the Spyderco version of the wave on the Delica and Endura; best bottle opener out there, pretty much. :)

What people actually need and what people want to carry are two different things.
I prefer not to carry knives with features that I don't need.
Some people may or may not actually need a lightning fast edc cutting tool, it's up to them to decide.

Spyderco made a waved version of the Rescue, because it made for another way to open the knife.
Handy with gloves sometimes; one of my knives that has a wave also has a thumb disk, and with my bulkiest winter gloves, I cannot make that stupid disk work.
But I can open it with the wave when pulling it from my pocket. :)

Of course, I usually just carry a different knife in the winter that opens easily with gloves.

Nice.

You have to stop making me agree with you.

I wear gloves year round on my job that pays the bills.

Also in Fire/EMS as a volunteer. More for community payback than the stipened I get.
