Zip-ties on knives

I put a zip tie through the mini Spyderhole on my Pingo to give it a thumbstud. Works fantastically.

This is really a great thread for new Spyder owners. I kept seeing pics of the zip ties, and figured they were for gloved hand manipulation at first. Then when I got my Endure Wave 4, I figured it out. A light bulb moment if you will. Looks like you get the best of both if you want.

I am going to Black Tie my Pacific now. That way when I am at the pool, and I whip it out, of my swim trunks, I can do the Wave! That is sure to impress the 80's Ladies at the pool.

"whipping it out at the pool to impress the ladies"

I mean, if you want to hit it off with some older ladies, that definitely cuts to the chase.

That's either gonna go all the way one way, or all the way the other way. No middle ground there!

It will for sure

Thanks all. It was helpful to read both clear answers (with photographic examples - like the first response), and the interesting back-and-forth with people's opinions on the zip-ties. Living in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, and working from home, knife concealment is not a big concern. Nor is rapid knife deployment. Reading the responses on this thread made me realize that even though I like to consider myself a function-based knife and tool user, I do have very deep-seated feelings about aesthetics. Before this thread I would have said appearance was low on my list of knife criteria. I can't honestly say that, now.

I like the idea of using zip-ties to try out the "wave" opening method. Seems like a good "test-drive" option to see if one likes this opening method. Beyond the short-term test-drive idea, though, I have to confess that I can't get past the appearance of the zip-ties on the blade. I don't want to offend anyone, but I think they are butt-ugly. If opening the knife as I pulled it from the pocket had real value based on my occupation or lifestlye, the functionality of the idea might out-weigh the negative impact on the appearance, in my view. In all likelihood, I'd probably just get a knife designed to be used in this manner.

I use my knives with my thumb on top of the blade spine quite a bit of the time, and the zip-ties look like they would make this awkward or uncomfortable. For me, the positives simply don't out-wight the negatives, so I guess I'll stick with a fixed blade in a pocket or belt sheath, and ponder the new-found revelation that I'm more vain with regards to the appearance of my knives than I thought I was.

Thanks again. Very educational thread, in more ways than one.

Hi there. I am the guy from the first response, and his so much criticized zip ties.

Thanks to a fellow forumite (there's great people and ideas in this forum), I've found this removable, easy to do method that looks much nicer and works flawlessly.

You can try it out, and see how it works for you. It's awesome.

I am really diggin it so far!

I've never personally tried them, so I can't say I like it but believe they're for ease of deployment. (At least thats what I can imagine I'd ever use it for)

People are pretty crafty

ThePeacent, in the spirit of CM's defunct(?) "Wave Everything" mantra, I propose that we protest the purists by zip-tying our fixed blades.

Zip Tie micarta. Stabilized zip tie burl. Zip tie Damascus. FRZT. The possibilities are endless. More pics please.

The nut on the zip-tie is clever. Still not my cup of tea, but I do see the usefulness of the thing if you like the wave concept.

I'm thinking of putting a zip-tie on my Glock 26 so I can carry it with an empty chamber and rack the slide when I pull it out of my pocket holster.

My teenaged daughter suggested I put a zip-tie on my wallet, so it will open automatically when I pull it out in response to her requests for spending cash. I'm struggling between a black or a white tie, but will probably go with white as a sign of surrender. I always suspected my knife hobby would lead to my eventual financial downfall, but this is an unexpectedly circuitous path to that destination.

I would just zip-wave a can of whupass so it opens out of your pocket when she reaches for your wallet.

(I should mention I don't advocate child abuse unless it's hypothetical)

I carry spydies blade down. I have been cut by tip up knives more than a few times. Most recent was the Para 2.

I feel it is quicker and more natural to open a tip down knife. But I guess I am in the minority on that.

Okay, so, I have actually included zip ties in my fixed blade setup because of nonstandard rivet spacing on this sheath

Personally I don't care what the crap anyone does with their own property. I may not do it, but have done much worse in the past that was not "cosmetically correct", simply to fulfill one of my own needs at the time. So I say, if it works, and you don't mind the "Git-er-Done" look....go for it.

But one thing I really need to know. If I zip tie these, will they open at the speed of sound or more? Will it get me shot because of the small sonic boom making everyone think I fired the first shot, rather than just deploy my pocket knife to assist with my favorite Jimmy John's Sub?

PS: No shit, I (and many others) use zip ties on my OSS' and Hissatsu's sheaths to fit them to the proper angle and secure them. Better than screws IMO.
