Zip-ties on knives

You have to stop making me agree with you.

I wear gloves year round on my job that pays the bills.

Also in Fire/EMS as a volunteer.
More for community payback than the stipened I get.

I'll try to be less agreeable. :D

The bolded part says that an extra way to open your knife is a good idea.
And thanks for volunteering to help your community; people helping out like that is what makes society work. :)

I just tried the zip tie trick on my Police, but the action is so stiff that it would not work.

Thinking of going for the Endura wave.

It doesn't just open your knife...it also opens your beer.
Especially the Spyderco version of the wave on the Delica and Endura; best bottle opener out there, pretty much. :)

And create lock rock after some time, if it's ti liner lock.

Debates like this really show where people land on the "tools vs functional art" spectrum

I think zip ties serve a purpose. If you want to wave a knife buy one with a wave. Im tired of seeing them on the same couple of knives over and over again on Just Pix of Knives thread.

Not all knives have a waved variety - doesn't give you many options. My zip-waved Manix XL was a blast regardless of whether you like the look or not :)

Or use something else.

Spyderco made a waved version of the Rescue, because it made for another way to open the knife.
Handy with gloves sometimes; one of my knives that has a wave also has a thumb disk, and with my bulkiest winter gloves, I cannot make that stupid disk work.
But I can open it with the wave when pulling it from my pocket. :)

Of course, I usually just carry a different knife in the winter that opens easily with gloves.

Nice.

Try using your forefinger and thumb w the disk. I only have a Kershaw Emerson which I'm sure is not the best example of an Emerson but i can't open it w my thumb. When i use two fingers and a bit of wrist flick it opens nicely.

I can open it that way or with just the thumb...except when wearing winter gloves that have 200 grams of Thinsulate insulation.
Unlined leather gloves or ones with Kevlar lining work fine with it, but once winter rolls around, the gloves become too thick to do so.

Never done it prolly never will :)
I don't own any manual openers that dont have a thumstud or flipper.

What people actually need and what people want to carry are two different things.
I prefer not to carry knives with features that I don't need.
Some people may or may not actually need a lightning fast edc cutting tool, it's up to them to decide.

I think you just explained the purpose of using a zip tie. People can decide,.very cheaply, for themselves if a wave opener is for them or not. Hate it - cut it off. Dig it - keep it or get a waved knife.

I'll use zip ties on a motorbike, to replace a missing fastener, or maybe to hold a flat tire on the rim. That's just to get from Point A to Point B, though, not from Jo'burg to Capetown. Never occurred to me to use one on a knife.

I see what you mean. What openers work best w thick gloves? I assume Spyder holes or maybe an auto?

The Spyderco Military works well to open with the large opening hole, and easy to close with the large cut-out.
It's about the best I've used for gloved use so far.

The ZT 0561 opens with its flipper nicely, but is harder to close.

So large opening holes and flippers that protrude a fair bit have worked best for me so far. :)

I used a zip tie on a military once. Since it's tip down, I didn't snag it on the pocket. I took it out and tried to snag it on a seam while pulling the knife toward my back. It opened partially and I stabbeb myself in the side of the butt around a half inch deep.

I know I know, candidate for the Darwin award....
