Zt 0350

Thomas I have a question for you. Is this guy going to have a ball detent so I can take the torsion bar out?

I would almost guarantee that it won't. Kershaw Assisted openers have the bal in place so that the lockbar glides smoothly over the blade, but the detent action is performed by the Speedsafe mechanism.

You could have a competent knifemaker grind a detent hole in the blade with a carbide drill bit..... I asked STR about doing this to a ZT0300 once.

I love it! Is it still looking like a MSRP of $129? Papa 0300 is $295. Less than 1/2 price. What's up? Is Strider not getting a cut or is it Ken out of the money chain?

A huge amount of machining time, cutters, etc are involved in the production of a 3-D contoured titanium handle like the one on the 0300. Just the raw titanium is very costly, and machining it is very hard on cutters. To be blunt, Kershaw is putting the 0300 out there for an extremely fair price. The money is all in the machining and the titanium.

Make the knife with flat G-10, steel liners, and thinner S30V sheet stock, and you cut out a huge amount of the cost - hence the great price on the 0350.

I sincerely hope Kershaw sells a ton of these knives - they are the right size for a more mainstream knife enthusiast, and the price is right.

'Nuff said.

I have to say that I really really miss the 3-D tooling on the G-10. I love how my 301's palm swells fit my hand... so for that, I am disappointed. However, I am still putting this in the 'buy' column. One nice thing will be that since there is no machining it will sit slimmer in your pocket kinda like an Emerson. But I am not saying that if perhaps a run were to be done with 3-D machined handles I would not run out and buy one with a giant smile on my face (Thomas ;);) ).

I am in the exact same boat here, but unfortunately, (unless Kershaw is managing something incredible) high-end pieces like the 0300 series and the Tyrade are not a knife company's bread and butter. Look to the economically priced knives - that's where the money is. And that money is what allows a knife company to make cool stuff for knife nuts like us.

In the end, a business must be able to turn a profit to stay alive, and sadly, high end stuff isn't usually the most profitable.

You will notice that there are some manufacturers (William Henry, Chris Reeve, etc.) that specialize in high-dollar / low volume knives. And if you look closer, those companies are generally quite small - often employing anywhere from 30-50 people total.

I don't know about any of their other models but I know the blur does indeed which is why I asked.

The Blur has a detent hole? Interesting. I know the Tyrade and ZT0300 do not have one.

sure does I prefer non AO knives so when I got my S60V blur blem back from Tom I took it apart and checked when I found it did I took out the torsion bar.

jimmer, have you taken these apart? I think I remember an older thread addressing the detents, and I believe both of these had them...could be wrong, tho...I'm old, and right now I can't remember what I had for breakfast! :D

I haven't personally taken a Tyrade apart, but I remember trying to find out whether or not it had a detent hole for weeks. I know for a fact that the ZT0300 doesn't have the hole for the ball to drop into.

It's important to note that I'm talking about the hole in the blade, not the ball that is pressed into the lockbar. They should all have the ball.

I would much rather be wrong in this situation, as it would be nice to have the option of converting these knives to manual action if I chose to.

Thomas, I don't know how many of these are around to get a picture of, but could you post a picture side-by-side with a Blur? I know the one at the beginning shows it next to the 0300, but it would be great to see it next to a knife of similar blade length to compare thickness, width, etc.

Looks great, two quick questions from a newbie...

Will the A/O mechanism be removable or disabled? This is because alot of overseas customs are very sensitive towards A/O(s)

Are those beefy liners titanium or stainless steel?

Thanks!

Speaking of the ZT 0350, I don't suppose there's a flyer (pdf) available yet, Thomas?

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...recurve...

:D :D :D :D :D

Mrs. Bun: "I don't like spam! recurves!

Mr. Bun: "Sshh, dear, don't cause a fuss. I'll have your spam recurve. I love it."
