What I mean is it would be great to have a non-auto version for the rest of us.

No Pip, that's not what you meant. You said:
I love the new ZT!

It's a pity it's automatic.

That blocks out MOST of the knife buying market.::crying::

I don't see why they have to be autos! The jury is still out with me whether we really need AOs let alone autos. Why do I say this? well the ZT0200 flicks out with such speed that to an observer it looks like an auto. It's also easy to deploy and you don't need to worry about mechanism maintenance (new springs torsion bars etc).

Can someone give me a good reason why these new 'beauties' -HAVE- to be autos?

Cheers,

Let's dissect this comment:

I don't see why they have to be autos!

They are autos because that's what Kershaw wanted to make. There is a market for them, and Kershaw felt this market was worth entering. It's a business decision.

The jury is still out with me whether we really need AOs...

What Jury? If you're concerned about getting caught in the UK with an AO, don't but them. If you do and you're caught, you know the consequences. Personally, I like the idea of having an AO knife...I prefer them. That's one of the many reasons why I buy Kershaws. And apparently, Kershaw has been and will continue to be successful in their production and sales of them.

...let alone autos.

They are 100% legal in parts of the United States. We're fortunate here that we have a Second Amendment Right. You're in the UK. What difference does it make to you?

...the ZT0200 flicks out with such speed that to an observer it looks like an auto. It's also easy to deploy...

Glad you like it. I like mine, too. It is a beast of a knife. Fires very fast and smooth, but it's not an auto. And I would think, given your location, you wouldn't want an observer thinking you have an auto, an AO or even a knife of this size on your person in public.

...you don't need to worry about mechanism maintenance (new springs torsion bars etc).

I wouldn't worry too much. Kershaw builds great knives that are extremely tough and reliable. If you should encounter a problem in the future with any of your AO mechanisms, just contact Kershaw's Customer Service. You will be pleased with your experience.

Can someone give me a good reason why these new 'beauties' -HAVE- to be autos?

Because that's what Kershaw feels is in their best business interests.

I'm glad to see Kershaw enter this market, even tho I won't be able to legally carry one. The laws here in Virginia are pretty specific as to the definition of an auto. I can own one, but I can't carry it in public even with my CCW permit. But we both already have a non-auto version...it's similar in shape and size of the 0200, just not with a tanto blade.

Have a nice day!:D

I do understand market pressure and etc., but making so called "tanto" blade? If you want, better make some real tanto shaped knife, not this Cold Steel "invention". You are after all have Japanese roots...

Thanks, Vassili.

It's meant for law enforcement, we don't need a perfect "Japanese tanto." This thread is not meant for adding opinions of how this is a "cold steel invention." And market pressure? What if ZT doesn't want to have one look that way. To me, the Japanese style tanto looks rather hideous.

Please, enjoy the pictures, and keep comments like this to yourself. :)

To Thomas and Tim Galyean--Looks like this one will be a winner!

I'm just glad Kershaw is making their Auto in house and not
having it made somewhere else like some folks.

Nice pics and plenty of positive comments, but all bullshit aside were DO I BUY ONE AT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Guys, I think everyone is being a little rough on topspeclt.

Admittedly he did project his knife legality situation on all of us, but the key points to get out of his posts are that he is excited about the knife, he likes the design, and would like to get one (if there were a legal way to do it).

(This is not to say that every one else's counterpoints weren't excellent.)

Vassili, Call the blade shape whatever you want, but "Tanto" seems to be the best description. What would you call it?

Matt, in order to buy one from NGK, you have to show active military or police credentials. They are illegal to carry, but not to own in VA. So Mike has to abide by Section 18 rules and regs...we gotta find an out of state source...

Pusher Man made me sad...................

I see you down there, Mike. Come on and give us the skinny!

Just read this and didn't know we had to produce credentials. Bummer. Who else sells the ZT line that would be carrying the auto's for public consumption?

Hey dudes, lets lay off the top man. He's my buddy and even though he lives across the "pond", he was just saying that non auto versions of these two new auto's would be nice. Tops is a good fellow but has to look at things in a different light due to where he lives. We sometimes forget how good we have things in the good ole' U.S. of A.:D:D:D

I quite like the blade shape, it makes a nice counterpoint to the curved parts of the handle, and yet is echoed in the two ends of the handle. Closed it's nice, because it looks nearly symmetrical, but is still asymmetrical enough to stay interesting.

I used to EDC a very similar blade shape, and always found it to be quite useful. It might sound weird, but you get a lot of the benefits of a wharncliffe blade, plus you can use the tip of the blade flush against a surface and still have clearance for your hand.

cutter, only if you order from a dealer in VA. I'm not certain about the laws in other states. I hope someone can shine a little more light on this.

I've ordered from Fla. with no problems, but that dealer is not a ZT dealer as far as I know. I definately want the Hawk 650 auto!

I would call it well suited for it's target buyers. It will pierce, cut, and have great tip strength all at the same time. Overall, a well engineered piece of steel. :D

It looks great to me. It also looks like you could simply stick a flipper on a manual version so as not to mess with the lines and keeping the button lock. I don't know the mechanics well but that's just the impression I got.

Hi, first of all, it doesn't block out the Automatic knife buying market, and I'm sure the run numbers and distribution channels are appropriate.

In the past I wondered the same thing you do about assisteds vs. Autos. My understanding is as follows. If you have such a knife for either defence or emergency situations that require quick reaction while in a state of fear or panic, then an Auto is the best route. This is because it rarely requires more than a tightening of your finger on the button which is already close to an appropriate grip position. Flippers and assisteds are more for convenience of one hand opening. You normally still have to reposition your grip much more than an auto after your finger either engages the flipper or in the case of the Blur, the thumbstud.

I live in Oregon, so I am thrilled with any new auto knife to try out ;) But I also like all the rest.

It's good to see a little fire in these threads every now and then.

Was there a question that needed answering from me?

Thanks, Vassili.

You seem real intent on telling Kershaw what they "better do".

I think they "better do" what they damn well please and it looks
as if they are doing a great job at it.

Have a great day. :)
