So are you now a Firefighter running with the rescue squad too? There are already tools like this out there and they reside on our apparatus like they should. Also the coolest little operator multi tool will not do what you wanted to either. We train for all kinds of different situations with all kinds of different tools. Just because you can buy this cool tool doesn't mean you know how to operate it. A simple Halligan bar would have been sufficient or even a Firemans axe. I would ask where the Fire dept was in this excursion you know for extrication and fire suppression but I expect it probably had something to do with pew pews and helicopters.
To help those who don't know: Mainly used as a forcible entry tool, its also a FF's multi tool for being able to do lots more.

Point being if you don't know what the hell you're doing with a tool you probably shouldn't be using it. Just because you can buy it means nothing in my world, training is key.
I also take offense to you bring up that this person that just perished as a point to help further your nonsense and to make people feel whatever it is you think they will feel for you. A persons life is not supposed to be used to further an agenda. I also can tell you that its not cool in any way shape or form to talk about a victim the way you have. Any self respecting LEO, FF, or FR wouldn't even fathom bringing up something like this that they just seen today in front of their own eyes. It takes a damn long time to process and suppress that kind of stuff.
You should be ashamed of yourself period.
Yeah, I was going to mention a halligan bar but that's why I mentioned something collapsible. But no, I'm not a firefighter and never claimed to be one. I am a first responder who works some of the most remote areas of the country. Firefighters with full rigs and anything more than advanced EMTs are more than an hour away.
And with all due respect, you can go to hell for saying I used a person who I just saw pass away this morning as any kind of fodder other than saying I wish I had a tool that worked better than what I had. I feel bad that I didn't have the right tools that may have allowed me to pull the guy out. Yes, there are tools that work. Yes there are tools that work better than I propose, but no, I cannot carry a full sized or even a mini halligan bar or fireman's axe all the time.
I mentioned the story about this morning simply to show what happened. Not everyone who responds to emergencies has a full array of proper tools at all times. Yes, there are companies that serve some of these purposes and I have no doubt that someone somewhere is making something similar or even better.
And no, I don't feel much emotion right now about what happened this morning. That'll come in a couple of weeks. It's something that happens and if you constantly break down about these things then it's not the job for you. Nothing about this morning was overly crazy. It was part of the job. And thankfully there were no kids involved.
And you, sir, should be ashamed of yourself for coming close to thinking that my lack of immediate emotion is anything other than a simple coping mechanism that we all have. I have some other, choicer words for you but I know that wouldn't be acceptable here so all I can say is #*^! you. I tried to save the guy and was covered in diesel trying to get inside a smoking semi-truck to save the man's life at the risk of my own. It sucks that there could be a compact, portable tool that may have helped and that it was right in line with what I was talking about in this thread. You think that was karma? I hope to God it wasn't.
Don't worry man, tonight I'll drink some whiskey to drown out the thought of what that man went through right before he passed. And have the understanding that it'll probably happen again soon and that'll need to be dealt with as well. And we'll all get together after with the two guys who could return to work, light duty with some broken bones and bruises and drink beers to show comradeship with them and the guy who'll be out for an extended period after they reattach his thumb and he goes through a long period of physical therapy.
When I say guys need some of these types of tools, I mean it. It's terrible that I literally just went through a situation that underlines my statements. I'll be dealing with it for awhile. It's even worse for the man's family and that it happened over the holidays. There's nothing I can do about that but pray they can eventually have some peace and move on.
