I am sorry to say with me it you like boxes and papers you will have to get over it. A nice little compact padded case that I don't mind keeping around will likely go a long way towards insuring the knife wont have scratches or be loaded with crusty dust bunnies. You can always wash the case if the outside has crusty dust bunnies. Try that with cardboard.
So you are saying that:

1. Without the pouch, your knives get loaded with crusty dust bunnies

2. A cardboard box wont protect your knife from the crusty dust bunnies?

I don't understand what/why you guys are protecting your knives, other than resale.
Doesn't bother me, I have always been under the impression to be using them.
knives should be built for tough rugged situations.
There are plain knives, overbuilt knives, art knives, and dressed knives. And as many different kinds of collectors. So no lectures on knife use, please.

Me too. I own a couple of businesses. When there is pressure to lower prices or keep them steady during inflation, it is pretty common to do away with frivolous extras to keep prices down. This would be a superb time for that.

Plus it will keep stuff out of landfills. And junk drawers.
Prices on stuff won't get any lower from here. And any minute savings through the omission of extras won't be passed on to the buyer. They would recoup the savings entirely on their own and excuse the omission as an alternative to a price increase, then increase the price anyway the following year.

I have some knives that I know I'll never get rid of, and are well used, sharpened. I have others more lightly used, that I keep in good enough condition that if SHTF, are in sellable enough condition that having box and pouch helps.

My Biryukov came with an embossed leather belt pouch, which I thought was really cool.

I like the little sock things that came with my Benchmade & Protech. I find those very useful for storage as they take up almost no space and protect from scratches & whatnot.

It doesn’t really add value to a purchase for me though.

I’m not a fan of the zippered clam shell cases, with one exception. My Darn Dao. It’s not a particularly easy knife to store.

One might say it's darn hard to store. You could always store it in a sock you darned.

No lecture here.

However the reasoning still doesn't add up.
A dress knife is not a dress knife in a pouch where you can't see it, sans a leather slip.
Art doesn't make since if it isn't seen.

I stand by my original statement.

I love swag. Any and all stuff that comes with a knife is added value, and just plain fun.
If it's not your thing, then go ahead and throw it away like so many in this thread say they do.
Let the rest of us enjoy.
The knife world is so over-saturated at this point, any little edge a company can get in order to sell, they are going to do.
Swag like pouches, stickers, patches, flight tags, these are the cost of doing business - but it builds a customer/fan base.
I think any company rep reading this thread should be wary interpreting these thread results.
Bladeforums are just a different kind of knife folk 😜

I appreciate the swag and attention to detail, but it never factors in to the purchase of the knife itself. It will make me think better of the way their company does things, provided that attention to detail also carries through to the knife itself. Sometimes the boxes are much too large for the size of the knife, which is less than good when you're storing a lot of them. Boker are major offenders this way, despite the nice presentation. My Benchmade Altitude came with enough extra room in the box to lease it out as a studio apartment. I'll probably never buy a James Brand knife, but I hear that they do a great job with their boxing and extras.

I like that I got a pen and calendar sent with my knife from Kellam in Finland. I liked the Nepalese newspaper my Kukri was wrapped in. I like the wooden box that came with my White River knife. I like the metal card tool that came with my Cudeman knives. I liked the way ESEE puts survival information all over their boxes and include a survival info card. I immediately threw out the plain cardboard box that came with my Condor knife, but I do make use their stickers as book marks. A local knife retailer that I regularly order from, sent me a lanyard with a bead on it with my first order. Another local knife retailer will occasionally throw in free gifts with my purchases. It's just nice when companies do things like that. An outfitter I regularly order from sends me bookmark sized stickers that get used as bookmarks a lot.

I tend to keep packaging, except for what comes with the the Morakniv, Opinel, Condor, and other cheaper knives with cheaper packaging. In the case of Cold Steel folders it also ensures I can keep track of all those left hand pocket clips. The boxes take up a bit of space but it's part of the collecting side of the hobby. It's the same reason I still have all my DVD cases, unlike people I know who throw them out and put them all in space saving storage containers. The case art is part of the experience to me.

I did say that I have no use for the cases, but, I do like the lapel pins that come with GECs - On runs where not everybody gets one, people do feel let down if they miss out on the pin, though that has more to do with collecting and reselling rather than any real use, in my view.

I’m going to have to throw a “Roughing the Knife Knut” flag on this poll. We have votes that like pouches split into two camps with a subjective determiner like “high dollar” separating them. The only choice for those of us who’d prefer to not get them is phrased in the form of an absolute expression. Not the best way to get an illustrative outcome.

The thread is penalized 15 yards and loss of down. Fourth down.;)

I've been using a Cutlery Shoppe key ring for years. It's orange, like a lot of my knives. It will probably wear out in the next year or two, but I've got a couple more to replace it.

A Liong Mah knife came with a really nice zippered, padded case that holds two knives. When I want to show a new knife or two to a friend, that case is a handy, legal way to carry them without a permit.

It’s been a long time since statistics class.

Half-time analysis time - you know, the one with 18 talking heads at a table all yelling over each other about how they’d have coached the game - how would you have laid out the choices?

I know dude. I’m not sure if I ever took Statistics.

If we’re going for a three vote poll I’d make them something like:
1. I want them
2. I want them in certain circumstances.
3. I don’t want them

Personally, I’d make it a two vote poll like:
1. Yes, give me the clamshells
2. No, keep the clamshells …

Since we’re really talking about production knives with generic, nylon clammys, not some custom knife clamshell made of mermaid hair and dreams.

And…you’ve used your challenge flag.

I had to take Sadistics, and to this day I don’t know how I passed it. I still don’t understand conceptually what all those calculations were supposed to represent. Once you get past mean, mode and median, I’m hopelessly lost.

It’s halftime, remember? No challenge flag, just a channel change. :p

I'd have to agree that a lot of the things they send are silly. I will admit that the very nice cardboard boxes that MT, PT, and Heretic send are impressive, but silly. Overall, I wonder if they could replace all that silly stuff with something more useful, or lower the cost of the knife. Packaging in general is annoying nowadays. Some stuff comes in such ridiculous plastic packaging, you practically have to blast to get it open. More than once, I have nearly injured myself opening one of those welded clamshell plastic things.

Knife makers those cases are some of the most well spent pennies. They makes sense.
Not according to the "knife guys" here.

If you are a collector? This stuff might make sense. I mean, you are storing and not using the knife anyway, so the little extras are neat. If you are buying a knife to use, like most people who buy knives, the box, or tube, or padded case are useless for anything but taking up space either in your gear area or in the landfill.

That's more related to research methods than statistics.
