0770 CF production question

Over the last couple days the black gloss paint on the clip is flaking off to reveal a more matte black finish underneath, I'd say about 30% of the exposed flat of the clip. Not a big deal it's a user and does not impact the function but still kind of disappointing to have a clip coating come off that fast.

That said the centering is good, lock up is solid, the handle is comfortable. I really like the smaller (shorter) pocket clip, though I'm not that fond of deep clips, it just makes it more annoying to get out of my pocket with gloves etc.

Overall it's a great knife, and a lot of blade for the size/weight.

I got two in, one had a slightly wonky strip of cf on the presentation side so I'm sending it back. It's #137.
My 0770CF has the same problem yours has. I wasn't going to send it in for repairs at first, but I took it into my local knife dealer and showed it to the guy I usually work with there. He spotted the defect right away. He said if it was his knife, he'd send it in.

The way I see it, the 0770CF is likely to be the only ZT knife I'll ever own. It's also a $225.00 list knife. There's no reason I should accept a defect on a knife that expensive even if it is only cosmetic. So it's heading for Tualatin tomorrow.

Bummer on the wonky cf.. could you let us know when you receive your replacement and if it has a similar issue. Really on the fence about picking up one of these guys especially if the first shipment had some issues with the cf

I have a couple of small issues with my ZT 0770CF. The lock bar is stiff and sticks a bit like excess metal. I have three 0770 and none of them are like that. I'm doubting it will get any better. Also, one of the pivot screws sticks out too far compared to the pivot screw on the other side (not flush against the CF scale). Admittedly, minor issues but since the dealer I got it from wants to deduct 20% for restocking fees I'll probably send it to ZT if it continues to bother me. I've never tried ZT warranty service before so it'd be good to give them a shot. I've asked for and gotten torsion bars in the past just as a proactive measure.

KAI received my ZT 0770CF on May 8th and I received it back today so a very fast turnaround. Both issues with the sticky lock and one pivot screw were fixed as it's my original knife. Additionally, they sharpened it even more.

A word of caution: do not send your knife in its original box as it will not be returned.

"Note: If you wish to keep your original Kershaw or ZT packaging, please do not send it with your warranty or service shipment. All shipping materials will be recycled."

My 0770CF came back quickly and in perfect condition as well. I removed the pocket clip before I sent it in and they installed a new one. So I've got a spare clip now. :)

My second one came in from Canada, #507. Everything on it is perfect, including the cf.

I returned the other one.

If you end up with a defective knife, the only issue is that you'll have to complete a warranty request form and pay to return your knife to ZT for service. And, of course, you'll probably want to insure it as well. So shipping won't be cheap. Having said that, it's obvious to me that ZT is willing to perform the needed repairs and return your knife to you quickly. So was it worth paying MAAP for my 0770CF plus the cost of shipping it back for warranty service? To me it was. The 0770CF isn't just the only ZT knife I'm currently willing to carry, it's the only knife ZT may make that I'll EVER be willing to carry. And if Ankerson's review is any indication, it's worth every penny of its asking price plus a whole lot more.

If you do run into an issue, you may also wish to try exchanging it with the dealer first before going through the manufacturer warranty, especially if it is a new and recently purchased knife. I would expect any reputable dealer would be more than happy to help you get things sorted out. Of course, if they can't, then you can always rely on ZT to take care of you.

That's true . . . assuming they've got a clean one. If they don't, you may end up paying for shipping twice. And then I did a REALLY dumb thing. Somehow I managed to throw away the box and the paperwork that came with the knife. (DUH!!!) The good news is that ZT doesn't want you to send them the paperwork, only the knife. So I took the only option that was available to me. Fortunately, it worked out well. :)

I don't carry 5+ ounces of keys either. ;) And don't be concerned. I've got plenty of great lightweight knives to choose from including an 0770CF. I might even pick up an M390 version when it comes out.

That works for me. :)

In case you're interested, I usually have three knives on me at all times . . . a CRKT Large Eros in the coin compartment of my wallet, a Leatherman Micra clipped to my RFP (the scissors are great and the knife blade is usable), and an unclipped lightweight EDC riding solo at the bottom of my LFP . . . safe, secure, and concealed from prying eyes. Today I'm carrying my Laconico Slim EDC. Tomorrow, who knows? Maybe I'll carry my 0770CF. Their combined weight should satisfy a pocket brick enthusiast like yourself. However, rather than carry a single folder that's larger and heavier than I need other than to impress people, I like the versatility a featherweight blade, a lightweight blade, and a multi-tool provide. Funny thing is, in all the time I've been carrying that combo, I never wished I'd had a pocket brick on me instead. YMMV.
