1000th soddie thread?

Every time I read one of these threads, I'm tempted to go buy one of these. But then I actually go look at one, and they do nothing for me, really. No bolster, thick plastic handle, boring blade shape. But then somebody writes another thread about how neat they are, and then I think, "17 bucks at Lowe's wouldn't be bad for the experiment, to see if I would like it." And then I do the rest of my cycle of looking at them, and saying, I've got a nicer Case in my pocket, thanks. Happened tonight when I went there for some bolts -- had my yellow handle Copperlock CV Wharncliffe in my pocket that I've been carrying and using all week.

So I don't own one. Maybe someday, I'll be thinking I should get one at the same time as I'm at the store, and have cash for spending.

Well, I'd like some info on where to buy one of those Wharncliffe copperlocks as I'm in the proces of trying to locate one. Can't agree about the sodbuster though, just one of those things!

Did you get my email? Was the seller out of stock?

Yes I did thank you! Will be sending you a reply soon...but I fear it may be an e-bay project! Got to get that Wharncliffe, wondering about what the current price would be?

I got mine from Ebay a few months back. Was about 25 bucks.

Talk about coming late to the dance...

I'd always passed up the lowly sodbuster thinking it a bit of an ugly duckling that needn't be added to my group of knives.

But, over the months that I've been listening to you fellas singing its praises I became more and more intrigued by this modest little knife.

When a guy I knew was letting a new one go for $15 shipped I couldn't not take a chance and so I did.

Well, the little sodbuster jr. arrived today and after a little bit of work on a fine ceramic hone to remove the burr and touch it up some, it is absolutely screaming sharp! (Needed to be oiled as well, but heck, that's just standard anyway.)

What a great unassuming little knife. I think I was right in an earlier post when I jokingly called it the poor man's Bose shadow pattern.

Great little knife. Thanks guys for teaching me something new and motivating me to add one to the group.

Here is my "new" Soddie with lemon juice patina:

I was in the same canoe as you on this unassuming knife. Your statement above says it all.

For $15.00 to $25.00 you get a knife that can do ANYTHING a much more expensive knife can do.... and if you loose it you don't "evacuate" a green and yellow cow on the spot;)

Congrats Blues......

Top knife the sodbuster jr!

Small, but a willing and useful worker that won't ruin your pockets either:thumbup:

It's an American work-knife classic like the French Opinel, timeless.

Ok, ok, you guys finally got me!

Several weeks back I got a Sodbuster on Ebay. Was a little too big for my tastes, so I offered to swap it for a Sodbuster Jr. in CV here on the forums. Found a taker and we made the trade.

The yellow Jr. just now arrived here. I LOVE it. Great size and very sturdy (but not too heavy). I'm very very impressed with the factory edge Case put on this sucker, as well. I was going to patina the blade but -- since I don't generally have much problem with rust on my carbon blades -- I think I'll see how long I can hold out, just letting it darken with natural use.

Same here. I clean, hone, and lightly oil my blade after use and that seems to keep them in shape. It'll darken over time, no sense rushing it.

Thanks to our good friend Rob Thomason, I have this little stag beauty from Queen inbound:

Well, might as well throw this one in the thread as well. Eye Brand, black wood handled, small sodbuster.

That's a beauty, Rob! (If only it were carbon or D2 I'd not be able to resist it's siren song.)

I hear ya, Blues. That S&M should have been one of their File & Wire models in ATS-34.
I wonder why you don't see many custom sodbusters? Part time maker Chris Crawford had a couple of sodbuster models on his website but I believe he is no longer taking orders. I just haven't seen many customs. I want one!

Here is a Mooremaker in 1095. I like the color of bone MM uses a lot.

Rob,

Gene Ingram is building a custom sodbuster. The large is what he's doing currently and the small will follow sometime later on.

I believe it's offered with black micarta scales and either D2 or S30V. My understanding from those who own or have handled one is that it's an exceptional knife.

Hey Blues...good to meet you at Blade...

yup...there are Sodbusters and then there is Gene Ingram's Sodbuster...I got on the list early and Gene handed me mine Monday...blade is D2 and scales are black Micarta...it is typical of Gene's flawless craftsmanship...

Wow.

Talk about "eye candy"...
I am always impressed with such craftsmanship. There is beauty just knowing that a real person pured their heart into creating something.
