13C26 Razor Blade Steel -- a Kershaw Junkyard Dog II Review

I just ordred a Leek in 13C26. I'm dying to test this guy out.
Not sure if I'll have time for a full review.... I'm in
grad school and the homework has reduced my knife quality time. :-)

Can you please tell me from where you did order it?

Thanks, Vassili.

I guess I'd like to know about that also because I didn't even know they made a Leek in 13C26.

All of the knves that were offered in 440A (Leek, Blur, Whirlwind, etc...) will be changed to Sandvik 13C26 in future runs. The Scallions and Chives will continue with 420HC.

13C26 Leeks have yet to be produced, soon though.

Huh? Then there are a lot of companies out there that
are selling leeks under the premise that they are 13C26.
I just bought one.

Just do a froogle.google.com search for: Kershaw Leek Sandvik

Maybe its a preorder or are you saying you already have it in hand? If so I guess it isn't the steel you thought it was. Thats one of the issues with many retailers though. Often times information posted is simply incorrect and this really isn't the manufacturers fault. I bought a Spyderco years ago called the Viele II that was sold to me as tip up carry and it was tip down so it happens.

I don't have it in hand yet. They sent me an email yesterday
that said 'processing your order.' So... if they are on backorder
then it will be processing for awhile. Or else I'll be getting 440A.
Not that I'm complaining or anything. So either someone
got confused at that company and entered the info wrong or I'll
be getting a Leek in a few months.

Ok... I emailed the company Buyoffseason.com where I bought the Leek.
I asked him if the 13C26 was backordered or the info was incorrect.

Here's his reply to me:

Hi Mike,

I just got off the phone with my reps from Kershaw Knives and the
specifications for the 1660 are correct.

The blade is*Sandvik 13C26 stainless-steel

Here is the manufacturer page for this product:

Another update:

The dealer just emailed me again saying they bought them
special at "the Nations Best Buying show in Texas."

And the knife just shipped today.

I'm not sure who he spoke with, but I'm telling you fact here, if you receive a Leek this week, it will be made of 440A.

We still have 440A to consume, and once that is gone, the change will be made. I'll keep you up to date of when that happens. Sorry for the confusion.

Ok Thomas. Thanks.

Can I hook you up with the guy I was talking to... so he doesn't
sell more of these? Because from what I've seen a lot of people
think they are selling 13C26 Leeks.

I don't want to cause any trouble, I just don't want dealers
misrepresenting merchandise and neither do you I'm sure.

I also want to say, putting myself in your shoes and seeing what's unfolded here, it concerns me that this could sour you on the forums, and make you think twice before involving anyone from the forums in future testing.
I just hope you don't think less of the BFC forum community because of all this.
Cliff, you should know as well as anyone, this is Netizenship 101: Things said in email between forum members are understood not to be for later posting -- that's the reason why they were emailed and not posted on the forums to begin with.

Not only have you really stepped in it, apparently you've decided it's OK to compromise people who trusted you in doing it. Who knows how wide a net of distrust this could cast, including people who've had nothing to do with this at all?
You know Dog, this situation bothered me greatly, and the more calls I received from industry folks over the weekend about this, only fueled my flames.
Let me see.....Threats of publishing private emails, calling me out as a liar, trying to persuade the members into thinking we put restrictions on our testers based on them being allowed to only post the positive. Questioning incredibly respected forum members as being on the take.
Our products, materials and reputation all are being trashed from a guy who has never handled or used the product.
Personally speaking I have never seen a display quite so sickening.

Soured...yea, think less of the community...not so much. I am trusting there will be some fall out over this, but we will have to see. I am going to take a few days off from posting though.

I just want to ask again questions which were lost by the wind...

Thomas,

What do you think about suggestions I made in my JDII thread (which was most popular thread I ever started):

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=458071

Suggestions are:
1. Additional clips for all four position (I'll be happy with one tip up lock side).
2. Thumb-stud or somethin in addition to flipper to open it gently.
3. Lanyard hole.
4. Choil on flipper not bump.

As you know, I can handle all of this myself, except #1 and this really prevent it to hold it place in my pocket permenantly. I get used to lanyard hang utside pocket to be able to take it of any time easyly, but if clip is near blade - no way I can carry it the way I like

I was always supportive to Sandvic13C26 it is nice to see it well recognized now. Is is time to try Sandvic 19C26?

Thanks, Vassili.

Do you have any date for that test run of 13C26 on 64HRC?

Based on this review, I decided to buy one for myself -and honestly this knife is just that damn good. I can't put it down. Ergonomics are great, fit and finish is superb and it comes very sharp from the factory. Weight is light for the size of the knife. I'm much more impressed with this one than my Spec Bump. (I only wish the clip didn't look so crazy, it looks like it came from space when clipped to my jeans).

I'm also very impressed with the Sandvik 13C26, didn't think much of it at first (looking at the composition), but it cuts very well.

Kershaw's just moved up the ladder IMHO, and if they keep going, they're going to be on par or maybe even surpass the industry leaders. Keep up the excellent work!

I also just got mine in the mail yesterday and I can confirm what flatgrinder says. I am also more impressed with this than the spec bump, this in my opinion is one of those great affordable knives:thumbup: As far as the clip? I like it, it fits good in my hand, I dont mind how big it is. I guess I am crazy. More kershaws will be in my pocket.

Yep. I was impressed early on with my Storm II and still carry that one as I said because I personally have taken to the unique one I personalized with the help of Thom Brogan and Kershaw with the special heat treatment on this particular prototype but in all liklihood more people will love the Groove and the JYD knives over the Storm among others. Still for a $30 knife the Storm II is a great buy in a quality made in the USA folder.

When I first reviewed the JYDII for Thomas my responses were much like yours when I reported back to him Flatgrinder only in my tests side by side with industry competitor knives that run three or more times the cost of these Kershaws it proved to me Kershaw had reached a new level here in quatlity. Its just my opinion but I believe they have set a new standard. This knife along with like 14 or so other models that are all new for them will in in fact set new standards not just for Kershaw but I believe they will effectively raise the bar for all companies. Why spend two or three times the money for another USA made folder that won't even be as nice?

I honestly can say I have knives here that were bought for in excess of $150 each that don't compare to the Groove or the JYD knives in apples to apples testing side by side cutting of hemp, cardboard, carpet and hard woods. I might add that the Kershaw knives all have much smoother actions and in fact rate up there with the best customs I have bought in how nice they are opening and closing. Each one I have recieved or bought was just pure silk when you opened it. All I could say was Wow!

I really can't say enough good things about this knife ... glad you guys are saying them for me! :)
