165OT Woodsman/UH Prospector ramble

OK....I JUST downloaded a pic, but I cannot add an attachment. So, I took the liberty of e-mailing them ( I have one of the Buffalo Bill and also the Kentucky Rifle) to lrv and hopefully he will be a sweetie and post them for me.......My e-mail is CleenToofs@aol.com

Larry, sorry for calling you "Irv"......I'm just a dumb blonde....I was reading the small "l" as a capital "I". I should have figured it out since your name is larry.....duh!

Penny, it is an ongoing joke here with Larry. Blond has nothing to do with it. He has been kidded so much that he answers well to Irving! And by the time his nom deguere fopah became apparant, he was too invested in the forum to change it. Like Lobo. I mean really, do you think he is a wolf?:D

Codger

Penney,
Codger got it right.. Im beyond blonde these days. No worry! These days I'll answer to just about anything.
Here are the 2 pictures you sent of the CM-1 and the Buffalo Bill 127

Looks like redshanks nailed the Buffalo Bill folder.

It looks like that in 1972 there was a Kentucky Rifle issued for both A.G. Russell, and for Belknap Hardware...are there other markings on your knife?

Thanks for posting the pictures Irving. :D

Gotta go now...time to howl at the moon. (OK,OK, so it's a yawn...it could be howling).

Lobo

Thanks Irv, I mean Larry! I appreciate it!
Lobo, On the Kentucky Rifle, one side of the tang has "00754 stainless" and the other side has "Shrade, N.Y., U.S.A., CM-1", the blade says "The Kentucky Rifle, America's Own 1750 - 1880" 1972 would probably be the right time frame for the purchase of this knife in that the owner died in 1977.
Thanks for the info, Redshanks!
Penney

The Kentucky Rifle commemorative was mentioned in some other thread, I think I posted this before, from page 53 of "The Gun Digest Book of KNIVES" by Hughes and Lewis, 1973.

Edited: Do you think your name has been spelled wrong?, this thread reminded me I've seen mine spelled "Lewis".

So then,

Done Lewis' ad shows us they were numbered. Yours looks like 754 (00754) of at least 10,000, with that numbering system. Not sure, just applying desert logic.

We are getting closer here!

Good work Done Lewis... :D

No offense retired amigo.

The tangstamp CM-1 is from 1971 for the Knife Collectors Club, INC. Its 1 of 12,000. BL pg 162. ver 4
3 grades of the knife were done by the serial #.
Issue price was 15.00. As this one is in the 3rd catagory. Not gold and not etched. Highly collectable.

Larry

Thanks for clearing that up Larry...
I see where the CM-1 is plainly listed...sorry.

Bill

Oops....I mis-typed on the serial # for the CM-1 .....it is #07754, not 00754. Probably makes a big difference!

Nope no difference.
1-25 were done in gold,26-300 were etched, 301- and beyond were monogramed or plain.

My son in law reported in this weekend after his hunting trip where he got his doe that his old NJ Fish & Game green handled 152OT carbon blade did him very well.
He used a Marlin 35 Remington to bring her down and the 152OT to dress it out.
Thats snow in the picture for some of you in the warmer climes.

Nice picture Larry! My son's deer was brought down during our youth hunt with a Ruger .243, and the honors were done with...what else but a Schrade duo, 152OT and 165OT. I did manage to get a recently arrived 194OT in on the job as well. I need to get out and get more deer. I have several new knives that need testing!

In my opinion, the now classic 152OT will remain a popular working knife for outdoorsmen for many years to come. My son and daughter, both 14, are going to each get a Sharpfinger 502SC as a pre-Christmas present this year. Both are slightly used (knives, not kids) and I hope to see to it that both see some more use this year.

My 165 Deerhunter is stamped SCHRADE U.S.A. 165 . I bought this knife a couple of years ago and then contacted SCHRADE asking for info as to how old it was . I got a reply saying that the orange handled 165's were made in 1991 and that 2500 were made .
I like the look of the orange handle myself .

I finally got a Deerhunter 165. A friend found it for me and nabbed it with a BIN, and it just arrived today. I am impressed with it's condition, mint, with a mint sheath, paperwork (copyright 1991), cardboard blade sleeve, and plastic bag. Everything but the box. It is not quite the bright neon orange I had expected from Larry and Phil's descriptions (maybe it needs new batteries?), but it would show up if left in the woods! It is one more variant I needed for my 165UH collection. There are a couple of more that have captured my interest though. One of those is the Copenhagen issue. Another is the latest LTD issue with UH handle scales, no shield. I've not yet seen one marked for Hoffritz, L.L. Bean, Wards, Western Auto, J.C. Penney, or a Sears with the Ted Williams mark, but I am looking!

Codger
PS - Thanks Redshanks!

Codger, I think you have the rarest 165 variant of all, the Tangerine 165OT. Mine is the same color, it's closer to Coral than Orange. Must have been some guy named Bruce that mixed the colors when these were made. :D

In a way, I am glad the hunting vests had not arrived for color match when these were made. The color does remind me of '56 T-Bird Dusty Rose, instead of the Dukes of Hazzard Mopar Orange. At least it is not Mauve. Maybe we could ask Martha what background material would display them to best effect. I am thinking Mossy Oak Cammo. Maybe with a few oak leaves and acorns, a pair of antlers attached for contrast. With pellets, or without?

Codger

By the way, I also bought Penny's Schrade-Walden 165OT. I have earlier serial numbers, but not in the box with all the fixins. Thanks, Penny!
