1725SG2 Ti/SG2 JYD II

can somebody post pictures of the junkyard dog titanium with another knife like benchmades or whatever or maybe a pic of the jyd II and the tyrade so i can see how big they really are thanks for the help

Thanks for the great pics and infos guys. Now I know what I want Santa to bring me. :)
Although... I'd rather wait for the smaller brother to come. The way things are going with those JYD's I'm almost sure there will be a Ti JYD I in the not so distant future being made.

ya i would also like to see the smaller junkyard dog with the titanium handle and that new steel blade

This is original JYDII with different knives - JYD II Ti/SG2 has same exact size, so you may have idea how big is it:

Ok, but it's the most awesone stuff I've ever tried... next to ZDP. I think it holds a finer edge than ZDP. Almost like vg10 but a lot harder with longer retention. touches up on a ceramic rod like a dream.

This is after a few weeks of use.. in unscientific, uncontrolled conditions. Also, I can't promise that I was always lucid, or awake* :p

*so, I don't care to debate about which superduper steel is better. ;)

I don't think that SG2 has been in our hands long enough to really be analyzed, but I think it's safe to say that it takes a wicked edge and holds it. I'll wait for someone else to torture test it against ZDP; I'm not that interested in counting rope cuts myself.

The real question is, is it worth whatever Kershaw must be paying for it? I'd say so.

Just got mine. I love the thing. Look in the gallery for my pics.

Nice Shot!

Funny coincidence that you shot it with a Shun, I ran into these comments by Ken Onion regarding SG2 in an older thread about steel for kitchen knives.

Stainless steels for kitchen knives ZDP-189 ,Cowry Y, VG-10,and my personal favorite VG-10 Super gold 2 . I have tested alot of steels for kitchen knives and super gold 2 is the finest I have used by a long shot ...

Anyway just thought I'd share my favs

I Have been fortunate to get some small sampling pieces from Japan to test. It is very hard to find in the USA . Kershaw makes the Shun Elite kitchen knives with it and I managed to twist some arms and sell my body :) to get some and I'll tell ya I am thoroughly impressed . It is a nitrogen steel, stainless and super fine grained. I have been using a sample kitchen knife for over two years in my kitchen and although it isn't as sharp as when I got it .It still gets daily use ,still fairly sharp. And I still havn't had to sharpen it. I am tempted ,but I just wanna see how long it will cut well . It is approx 67Rc similar to ZDP-189 but in my experience it is tougher, more corrosion resistant and much tighter grained . I also carry daily a ZDP-189 folder, and a custom folder in VG-10 supergold 2 .The Super gold 2 always cuts better ,stays sharper longer and needs less touch up. I'm a believer.

I don't know where to get it in the USA .I believe it is a Hitachi steel. I wish someone with Japanese conections would import some so more of us could experience it . I am trying but not getting very far . Any of you guys have any conections?

I'm pretty sure it is a Takefu steel (also mentioned by Larrin later in the thread).

Hey Tim, have you gotten an SG2 JYD II over to Ken to play with?

I wonder if there is any way that Kershaw can get SG2 without the laminate? I know that the laminated steels can be a bit of a pain to deal with in the manufacturing process, so I was thinking if there ever is a Ti JYD I, would it be easier to make an SG2 composite blade?

I feel like Steve Martin in The Jerk with the phone book. "The new Junkyard Dog is here!! The new Junkyard Dog is here!!!!"

I know by now we've all seen plenty of photos, but mine just got here on Monday, and since I just now stopped playing with it for a few minutes I had to post a pic.

What an awesome knife. Worth the wait for sure, and just as sharp as everybody said! My left arm is almost completely bald from showing off it's shaving abilities:D

Cheers,
Jon

Great pics Vassili!

Have you done any more testing with the SG2?

It is waiting for Christmas to be delivered by Santa...

I will finish Lauri PT steel (which turn out to be slightly better then Friction Forged D2 - with price for one 4" blade for $15! Kershaw should send someone in a hurry to Finland to learn this Progressive Tempering technology (tempering process is developed by Juha Perttula, doctor in technology at Tampere University in Finland).

After Lauri PT I think I may try ZDP189 together with SG2.

Thanks, Vassili.

Well got to playing the last few days on John's old knife! ;) My first Kershaw pimp job! :D Blades at a 600 grit satin finish right now. I tried to acid etch it but it came out spoltchy so it will stay just a satin finish. I thought the acid would bring out the differance in the metal. Handle is highly contoured with the inside of the handle being mirror polished blue as well as the traction grooves and the outside rivet pattern too. Changed the pivot around a little bit too. :)

Cheers, Jim

How did you polish handles? I just realized what all Titanium handles are asking for - not only JYD, but Cyclone and Leek also.

Thanks, Vassili.

Normally I will sand Titanium down to about 400 grit and then literally buff it shinny. But if I did that with this handle it would distort all the rivet holes. So the whole outside on the edge was taken down and rounded off also to 400 grit. Then the outside of the handle flats were sanded on a granite block. I use the spray adhesive and stick a sheet of 9X11 sandpaper down to the granite so its perfectly flat. Some people also use glass if they don't have the granite, you just have to have something extremely flat! I started out with 220 grit and worked my way down to 400 grit. I did it with the knife all together which makes it easy to hold onto with the exception of the blade that was out of it and I used a spacer with a hole in it where the blade went. This was only possible when all the screws were countersunk to below the flat level if you will, otherwise you would have to do only one half at a time because the screws stick out above the flats. If you try this on any knife you will most likely find out once the sand blast texture starts to be removed from the Ti there are deeper scratches underneath it that will need to be removed too on the flats. I did allot of hand sanding till all the deeper scratches were gone with the 220 grit and then changed the paper out to 400 grit. I also use WD-40 as a lubricant. You also need to keep all the scratch lines going the same direction. Another little trick is when you get it to where you like it at 400 grit you take some 0000 steel wool with some WD-40 squirted into it and run it the same way you did with the sand paper. Doesn't take much. It will smooth all the lines out and give the Ti a creamy look. FWIW I have about 8 hours into this particular knife so it isn't a real easy/fast thing to do.

That looks fantastic Jim!

The titanium looks so nice with that finish, it really makes me wonder what it would look like engine turned.

8 hours! Do you think I may just try Green Rouge to make it shine or it will only expose diper scratches hidden for now but beat blasting finish?

Thanks, Vassili.

P.S. Do you think polishing will be possible on ZT302 with it grooved handle?
