18" Keffeler Sword (K18), AKA The KOD Piece

Is the fuller a bit too close to the front/leading edge of the blade? Thoughts? Do we know how thick the blade is at the tip of the fuller?

Awesome videos btw.

Those in the videos are Dan Keffeler's prototypes. Dr. Dan will presumably also offer his own custom versions, but I'm just guessing. Anyway, here is Nathan's CAD version in case you had missed it:

The CPK-K18 will be different than those protos.

yeah, I know...I was just hoping beyond hope Nathan would make a last minute design change and swerve back more toward his prototype <in terms of fuller size, at least>:

I definitely agree, I'm a big fan of how the big fuller looks. That being said, I'm good with whatever they decide to go with because I'm sure it will be optimized for performance. I really can't wait to get my hands on one!

copy that  we're of the same mind :) ...

And I also have faith there was a reason why he changed his prototype above...I'm good with it...heck, I'd better be good with it-- I've already ponied up for my KOD piece.;)

And a cpirtle cpirtle custom scabbard to boot!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

I figure the first sign that we're getting close will be when we have BREAKING NEWS of a KOD piece touching down at the Pirtle Made leather manufacturing complex in Ohio.

So, Chad, any bogeys on your radar screen heading your way out of NC?

I'm guessing the narrow vs wide fuller is going to depend on weight distribution/balance, strength as well as aesthetics.

Narrow or wide, i definitely prefer the way it looks in the CG image above, where the end is further from the tip.

yessir, I imagined the same reason for the change, but we'll never know for sure unless Nathan weighs in.

Aesthetically, imho, even better looking if the fuller on the distal end was moved more rearward to kinda balance <visually> with the distance from the quillions in the rear. And no doubt, it'd result in a stronger tip and allay any concerns that anyone would have about ever grinding into the end of the fuller when sharpening.

Although it doesn't LOOK that bad when you have to grind into fullers <pics below*>...

But, hey, what do I know about designing and producing knives?...All I do is spend my kids' college funds on em. :p

*vertical fullers, Busse calls em CBT, on a Busse HG55 without sharpening by me...

*now, here's how fullers look when you grind into them...I knocked the angle back to 15 dps <was close to 20 dps before> on this HG55...as you can see the fullers still <look> great...

Nothing yet. I was meaning to check in with them before all of this Covid stuff broke out but at this point I'm probably the only person who bought one fine with them taking as long as they need :) Go gentle, my flame retardant suit is at the cleaners!

I'm pretty much dead in the water with our (Ohio) schools closed from 3 weeks to indefinitely. My wife is an executive in her company and they are mired down with issues related to the virus and all of the shut downs, so i am the primary on taking care of our six year old while she's home. I've been working at night after they are in bed and in the day as I can but it's limited.

That said, I am very excited to see these too and I fall on the small fuller side of the debate ;)
