2" x 72" Belt Grinder kit $369.99

just tell me where to send the money!!
i'm down for a full kit.
do you have to pick between one of the 2 attachments?
can i purchase both?

Have you thought of doing/offering the rotating platen separately? I guess it will be spec'd out in your plans, but maybe some folks would like buying just that instead of the whole kit?

Honestly, no, I hadn't considered that. I would sell just the multi platen for $20 plus shipping. Shipping would still be $10.20 via flat rate box.

I suppose you could purchase both. One would be with the kit, and the extra would be $20. I have to ask, though, unless you wanted it for another grinder, why get both?

Jamie

well correct me if i'm wrong!
do both of the arms perform the same functions or each attachment performs diferent functions? to me it sounded like you had the option of one or the other, and that is why i figured i would like to have both.

don't worry about it! i'm new to knife making and that may be why i'm confusing you.
all i can tell you is that this set up looks great! and i want one!
if you do take orders put me down for one.

thanks

Nothing wrong with asking.

One of them is designed to have two idler wheels of the same size, say 2" diameter with the platen inbetween. It's fixed in position and traditionally only the platen is used. I have multiple grinders at home, so one is setup with this style of platen, and the next is setup with a dedicated wheel.

The other is designed to have either a 2 or 3" diameter wheel at the top and a 4, 5, 6, or 8" diameter wheel at the bottom with the platen inbetween. This one is designed to rotate so that you can use the small wheel, platen, or large wheel. This is a good option if you'd like all three possibilities, but don't want multiple grinders.

Jamie

I would also like to get mine with both platens. I think it would be handy to have the regular platen with 2" wheels on it and have the multi platen with a 3" wheel on top and a 6" or 8" on bottom. I guess it would cost more to have to buy all those contact wheels but I think it would be very versitile. You could do any thing from flat grinds, hollow grinds on large blades, use the small wheels for folder blades, and plobley have a slack area between the wheels and the platen to do convex grinds. Thats just my thoughts. I think it may come in handy to have both.
The other problem I have with the multi platen I have right now is while grinding on the left side of the grinder the tool arm is so close to the face of the platen it gets in the way while doing flat grinds. So having the standard platen would put the tooling arm farther back and out of the way if that makes sense.

Forgive me guys but I have only just gotten to this thread and it is a long one, so maybe I missed it but are there some pics of this rotating platen? I would be very interested in one for use with a 2" and 8" wheel. And for $20?
That is less than what I was gonna pay to have one cut.
Anyway maybe direct to a post # or if you have a pic could you post it?
Also If you are gonna offer these I would suggest a new post as well.

Sean

Hey Sean, on page 17 and post #337 is a cad drawing of all the parts. Maybe it will help.

The multi platen is the one on the far right. It's just the 1/2 inch steel frame. Additional hardware and wheels aren't included.

Jamie

Thanks guys I just found it. So is it cut and shipped for $30?
BTW to all the guys who have put work into this it is great. I just finished a KMG clone but I will be getting one of these built soon too. Cant have too many grinders right?:)

I found a local water jet guy that will be cutting out two for me.

Decent price and he said he would ship if any one is interested.

Here's his e-mail john@mtck.com

Edit to add: The water jet guy just has the drawings that Blindhog posted, no platens like Polarbearforge is suppling.

Take care

How can I get more information on the 2" x 72" Belt Grinder kit $369.99

The total cost will be $260.20, $250 for the kit and $10.20 shipping via priority mail.
(For more info see this post: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=7745027&postcount=337)

Please everyone, make sure you realize these are plans to cut out the metal parts for a FRAME for a belt grinder (or a kit of the FRAME parts already cut out). This (or the platen option by itself) is not complete. Many parts are still needed to complete it: an electric motor, a drive wheel, idler wheels and/or contact wheels, a spring, nobs, etc. Holes need to be drilled and tapped and/or welding needs to be done to put the whole thing together.

All this being said, this looks to be a well rendered affordable belt grinder solution and should serve its user well. Great work guys!!! I just thought it might be good to restate this stuff in case there was any misunderstanding by folks just joining in the conversation.

I look forward to starting to see photos of some of these built!

All the best, Phil

Thanks I have been following the thread but have been confused at times if anyone is making a Kit it looks very cool and the video helped convince me that this could be a good investment I was looking at the no weld grinder but this look superior to it.

Nice looking grinder and a lot of effort on several parties to push it to completion. Im interested in this but was looking on the KMG site and the bare bones unit with flat platen and toolbar and rest is 750. Figuring the kit, the bar, tool rest and drive wheel, idler and the two wheels for the flat platen, plus various bolts nuts and washers and knobs, conseratively the total would be around 550,and you still have to put it together. There is the shipping on the KMG, and that would vary. The motor would be an expense on either one. You could get three speeds with the KMG but would need a variable motor to get more than one speed with the kit. Lot of things to consider. Ill keep following this thread. Lots of talent expended and good effort on all parties involved.

Farmer Phil.
On the EERF grinder, the motor is mounted directly to the frame with the drive wheel attached to the motor shaft. It doesn't use pulleys. It would be single speed unless you used a variable speed motor. I believe in the original post there was the possiblity of using a bearing sharft but that has been dropped in the final plans and a face mount motor only is being used.
