2010 Forum Knife - Mission Statement

I am with a lot of the other folks who would like to see GEC equal end knife, arched stamp, date stamp on the other side. If we have a distinctive stamping, we could get rid of those nasty shields, and, heaven forbid, serial numbers. Shields, along with being ugly, cost money.

I particularly like an appropriate shield.

Yes on the tang stamp!

Carbon steel, 3.5-4.5 inches closed.

Much neater than mine, Mike! That's the idea!! We have yet to find out if Queen or Canal Street will do a stamp. After the Shot Show.
We could do a straight line stamp, but IMO this one looks like the ones on real old knives.

TR, not everyone likes shields, but most do. I had a batch of HJs made without shields, and couldn't sell them. I think my "informal poll" speaks volumes. We can include it in the final poll if you wish, but let's see what others say first.

Heh. I loathe serial numbers on the bolsters. Your stamp looks nice but I would pass on the ".com" in the center. It looks like an afterthought and out of place.

here are some thoughts on the stamp, utilizing some simpler typefaces.
I used a couple serif fonts and non-serif similiar to some of the older stamps i've seen. Along with playing with the arch... I'm not really keen on the .com having so much prominence, but i'll leave it up to you guys.
I tried out using limited edition adding a unique touch without dating and requiring the stamp be changed each year.
anyway let me know
thanks

Nice work!
Thanks.

I like the middle one the most
Bladeforums as one word
And Limited Edition is secondary, I would even knock it down a point size

Or
The one to the right with .COM knocked down two point sizes

I agree, that middle one is really nice, that'd be my first choice.
Nice work IVANKERLEY.

If we do do a pattern with a shield, what about lasering or etching the date in the shield? Just a thought.

I'd be happy with a GEC as well, although I'd prefer one of the curvier handles as apposed to a cigar. Wouldn't turn down the cigar, heh, but just my preference.

I wouldn't argue with any of those blade stamps. A straight handle with squared ends would be better, for me, than with round ends but the curved shape would be better for either end configuration.

I really like the GEC brand, from what I've seen, and was just about to buy one when I saw this thread... looks like I'll be waiting this one out, just like I did with my Rat Pack RC3... and that turned out awesome.
That being said, my two choices, both color and style are below.
I really like the tractor red bone, but the natural bone look is classy, too.
I like both the #73 scout style and the toothpick, but would prefer a 3in blade.
Here's the red scout (pic is from a vendor site). The color is fantastic.

and the toothpick (from knives ship free)

The dot.com is important.....and it can go in the arch if people don't want to make it on the horizontal....if you look above in the upper left of this page, you will see BladeForums.com...sized about just like that.....

It is the name of this place, and without honoring that, we might as well slap up "a monkey's uncle" on the tang stamp.

My .02.

I like the middle stamp as well, with the smaller "Limited Edition" font.

I have no need for the .com -- to me, Bladeforums signifies the community, .com is just the business address.

FWIW

I like the Upper Right of the above tang markings.
i think ".com" can be omitted. we all know what "Blade Forums" is and i don't care if the uninitiated don't.
Shields should be clean, unmarked, IMO.
"2010" could be on pile side tang.

STephen, I respect your opinion, but I'm going to disagree with you on this one.

I certainly respect that, but my thinking in omitting it wasnt to slight the forums but rather to utilize a more informal usage, like when the wife asks what yer doing on the computer you say "Bladeforums" rather than i'm on "Bladeforums.com"
Besides i think it would look like a traditional mark sans .com
We all know what it is and it'll look mysterious to anybody else.
Emphasis on the .com just bothers me, as i dont think its absolutely necessary, to much info is just that.
Personally i say drop it.

I (like the others before me) disagree. The ".com" part is unneeded. If it really twists Spark's knickers (and he is the only one who matters, really) I suggest we revert to a "BFC" stamp. That would probably look less cluttered anyway.

I also like the middle stamp with Bladeforums and limited edition. To me the ".com" is kind of like the "www" part of the name. Just my preference.

We have a tradition going with the BFC markings on previous knives. By that I mean including the "C". The 2009 Barlow has it right on the bolster. I thought we didn't need it, but bowed to the majority. For me the question is; do we keep, or drop, the tradition??
Labelling the knife "Limited Edition" or something like that brings it too close to being a "Collector knife" versus a real knife! I want a knife that reminds me of my good friends here, but is o.k. to stick in my pocket, or cut something with.
After this point I will refrain from further comment, but let's decide which is best for this coming knife, and for those that follow. Is the reference to the internet important, or not?? I don't see it as a problem for the stamp being traditional in format; it is traditional. It is only about the information.

Quite a rant for an old knife-fart!

Honestly, I am ALLOT more interested in determining (or discovering) the maker, pattern, blade shape, blade steel, handle material and color, than deciding weather .com should be included in the tang stamp.
That seems like a finishing touch to me, not necessarily a foundation to build a knife around.
Just my .02

We are not trying to 'sell' this knife outside of the BF community so '.com' is completely superfluous to the members who might buy this blade.
