2010 Forum Knife - Mission Statement

Funny how such a small difference makes all the difference. Many think a 3-5/8 to 3-3/4 inch knife is pocketable, but not quite "enough," and most think a 4 incher is just a little too big for the pocket. That Queen teardrop is just about perfect at 3-13/16--pocketable and a handful at the same time. With two blades, one straight (wharncliffe or sheepfoot) and one bellied (clip, spear or spey), one of them smaller for precision work and the other full-sized, it would be a great all-around EDC. My .02.

I know it is early for blade shapes....but

+1
Well explained

If blade profiles still need to be discussed, this knife might not be fully agreed to until 2011, and maybe page 2010 !
i think there should be a date and page # cut-off, after which Charlie and the boys use their wisdom and experience and order whatever knife THEY like.
i'll be 'in', as i bet most will be. this amount of nit-pickin' should be reserved for those with the lice, eh.

Huh?

I have complete faith in waynorth, mikeymoto, and ea42, in their cat herding capabilities and slipjoint knowledge, but two of the most important things about these annual forum knife purchases. . . . .the process of elimination and everyone having an input. While our input may not meet the likes of others, those wishing to throw out their two cents have an outlet to be heard. If the selected knife package doesn’t meet your, mine, or anyone else’s vision, we have an option not to participate.

With all respect intended towards waynorth, mikeymoto, and ea42, if the intent was for "Charlie and the boys" to select the knife package, I’ll forgo this entire process and shoot them an email requesting their suggestion on my next slipjoint purchase. I can easily wordsmith “BFC 2010” with a magic marker on one or all the blades. :D

Unless I’m mistaken, based on the past four years, each benchmark doesn’t occur overnight.

Just so there’s no confusion (see the highlights). . . . .

I, with mikeymoto and ea42, have taken on the task of organizing the Forum Knife for 2010. We will share the work as equally as possible, and we hope that we can put together your choices in a satisfactory manner.

There will be some compromise on the parts of all of us, and we should consider some of the things we couldn't or didn't do before. If last year's knife was your dream knife, let some other choices come to the fore!

If you prefer something else, put it forward in a considerate manner. And I hope we will retain the wisdom we have been gaining each year. And remember, there will be more knives to come.

Can you explain why you like the barehead version? I personally prefer the bolster if for no other reason than protecting the handle material.

That teardrop pattern is beautiful.

Er, not really it's just a subjective thing about the aesthetics of a knife.
I'm partial to Barehead knives in general, but I do feel they need the bolster to be a bit bigger than general to compensate for lack of end-cap. Some very old English knives often came Barehead and I just admire them.

But, a Teardrop with 2 bolsters is just right too, beautiful as you say:thumbup:

Dave's post No. 356 showed those Queen English Jacks I was referring to, thank you.In particular the last of the three with Clip as master blade. I have the S&M XVIII series English Jack, giant Sheepfoot might not be to many tastes I admit, but I like this knife a lot. Nothing wrong with wormgroove but the brown colour is dull&dark and doesn't enhance the pattern at all.

The Swell Centre looks another decent choice too, so Swell Centre, Teardrop or English Jack, I'd be pleased with any of them, but, whatever, let's do it big this year:D

I haven't participated in the Trad. forum knife before, but as I understood it, our 'search committee' was using this thread as an announcement and feeler of things. I assumed they would develop additional threads to vet out various decisions among the participants. Polls seem like an ideal venue for this kind of thing and they worked very well for settling on the rat cutlery forum knife.

Anyhow, I'm still keeping an eye on this thread and the forum knife. Just waiting to see what the next steps are. I believe they said they were waiting for the completion of the SHOT show so as to be able to discuss options with the candidate manufacturers and then flip them back to members about viable possibilities.

just to tease! and cause i like this Knife:thumbup: Wearing a slightly revised arched stamp and roman numerals on the bolster, and the original bone scales... Still like the ebony but i think we're out numbered on that:)
cheers

"roll that beautiful knife footage!"

I'm all in for this sweet looking girl!

Thanks, Stroker - nice Empire!

O.K, the discussion leans toward a Teardrop, with a swell center, or an English Jack as second choice. As well there seems to be a general acceptance of a bigger knife.
Has this experiment satisfied you all generally that this is a reasonable direction?
Let's get a little more response from you before I set up a poll. If it is overwhelming, perhaps we can dispense with the poll, and move on to GEC.
Just simply, 3 questions;
1)Is bigger O.K?
2)Is the Teardrop number 1 choice?
3)What's your second choice??

From Queen...

1. Bigger is Good
2. NO - Large Toothpick #1 Choice
3. Sow Belly Stockman #2 Choice

1. How much bigger?
2. Seems like it.
3. Sodbuster.

1)bigger is O.K
2)Is the Teardrop number 1 choice?
3) Tough call. Its very hard to tease out shape names and performing a 20 minute search on the webs isn't coming up with much. I like English Jack and 'half moon pie', but without a strong sense of Trad. lingo I'm not 100% what the above terms mean relative to the shape of the knife or if they refer to the blade configurations....

(need more guidance for #3)

Just simply, 3 questions;
1)Is bigger O.K? 3-3/4" is about my limit. I just don't carry anything bigger
2)Is the Teardrop number 1 choice? No, Center Swell--either "Jack" or "Bulllhead"
3)What's your second choice?? Teardrop jack, with distinctive with distinctive bolsters to set it apart--barehead, candletip, threaded, rattail, etc. I'd also prefer 2 blades, not a punch, since I have one of your wonderful Harness Jacks in this pattern already.

1)Is bigger O.K? Yes
2)Is the Teardrop number 1 choice? Yes
3)What's your second choice?? Equal End Jack
