2010 Forum Knife - Mission Statement

I think the tang stamp idea is great! I'm not a big fan of blade etches, and I'm all kinda thrilled with how the bolster stamp turned out this year. A tang stamp would be a great understated way to show the special knife without the over the top big blade etch.

I like the idea of a big knife, the last ones have been small. Carbon steel is always good, D2, although not a typical carbon steel is a great option.

I still like the idea of the scout from the other thread, but I know we don't always get exactly what we want :D. I'm not a big fan of the muskrat format, but a nice turkish clip and a warncliff does sound kind of cool. The slim turkish clip blade stockman, or even better whittler, sounds pretty darn nice in a bigger size. I still like the idea of a nice single blade pattern too, I'd more go for a simple jack, or some form of serpentine, dogleg, or swayback as apposed to a sodbuster design, but a simple hardy knife does sound good.

I'm pretty darn open on handle scales, bone, stag, micarta, etc. Not a big fan of acrylics, but in a simple color combination I could get into it, just preferably nothing crazy or bright.

I'm probably gonna buy one regardless but those would be my favorites in whatever combination.

How bout a canoe whittler with buffalo horn handles? And of course some kinda nice carbon steel blades.

The '07 BFC knife was a CSC Cannitler with mastodon handles & D2 blades. That's real close to what you described.

I still think a smallish (Peanut maybe) or a med to lg. (Mini or reg. Trapper) would be great choices & there's plenty of makers & patterns to pick from.

Personally, I really like D2, but fully understand if people prefer 1095. Stag's fine with me, too, but I also like bone & even jigged micarta (I think that was suggested last yr) would be nice, too.

If I had to pick something, I'd say a mini Trapper (3.5-4") with D2 blades & jigged micarta (If available) would be sweet.

Plastic has NO place on a special traditional knife like this, imo.

Jigged micarta is not an option, unless someone has an inexpensive source for the material, Queen doesn't have it, and I don't know about the other two.

We were going with jigged bone last year until the stag benefactor stepped up. If another handle material "angel" comes forth, then it will be up to Charlie and his team to incorporate that into the project.

So....:( I guess that means caramel colored waterfall celluloid, even though it is my passion, is out of the question:confused:.
:D:D:D

Hi just a thought. I know alot of people love the sodbuster. How about a high end one from queen. I personally like their pattern a little more than Case, even though they aren't available to do it. Get some good steel, CPM154 or something else, and a nice jigged bone or smooth handle. That would be really sweet if I do say so myself.

I've seen CPM154 and a couple of other steels not normally seen in production spec Slipjoints throughout this discussion...
Wouldnt we have to decide on a steel already being used in the manufacture of knives specific to that manufacturer?

Not necessarily....when we initially spoke with Queen, they were open to just about any steel on the market...but some of the steels added up to $10.00/knife:eek:

If past products are any indication, we will either do D2, 1095 or a stainless of some sort, but I am doubting the stainless part.

Thanks Steve,

$10 or a 10% increase in production cost wouldnt be all that bad though, would it??

I've been kicking myself for not getting in on the 2009 version and would like to remedy that for 2010. Thanks for putting it together.

My preference, such as it is, would be for a larger, rather than smaller knife and for an unusual stag or horn handle and blades from a stainless, rather than carbon steel.

We shoot for no more than $100.00/knife, and really try to keep it under that, including shipping.

When you start talking about stamps, special steel, handle materials and other considerations, it can pile up quickly.....for instance, a special shield or even ANY shield adds $5.00 or more to the cost of the knife, a special stamp adds about $5.00 to the cost of the knife....so far for this imaginary knife, we have added $20.00 to the price. Say the base price is $50.00, and now it is $70.00, and we haven't even talked about handle material, or special nail nicks or changes to blade configurations.....well, you get the idea...., fwiw, stag is extremely expensive, adding at least $20.00 to the cost of the knife, and probably more.

Ahh, I see.

Excellent info though for those starting to delve into it, and those making decisions for this year.

Please keep posting this educational knowladge, so we have a more realistic way of knowing how much stuff will cost.

So what are the extra cost for nail nick, and blade configs ect

I brought up the jigged micarta because it was brought up last yr. 3 of the 4 BFC knives have had stag (The other was mastodon). To keep costs down AND to have a knife different than the previous 4, I'm all for a nice bone (Jigged or whatever's decided).

I don't mind stainless steels, but agree that good carbon blades (1095 or D2) probably should be the steel of choice & probably one of the 2 will be the most popular in a vote.

I think the big issue will be what pattern & blade configuration. Again, looking at the 4 previous, there's been (2) 2-blade knives & (2) 3-blade knives. So, yes, a single blade Trapper or Sod-Buster would be a good choice. I wouldn't mind a Congress, but I'm guessing that'll be pricey (Probably over the $100 goal).

Also, great point about stuff adding up. some of us might not mind, but I think the majority would rather it stay under $100. The added costs of shipping is another good point. I'm guessing that before shipping's added into the equation, the knife probably needs/should be around $80 or so (Does that sound about right?).

How about a cattleman but with a spear as the master, a sheepsfoot and a small clip for the blades?

Thank you gentlemen for taking on this project. For my $.02... How about a Harness Jack from Queen or GEC?

I think both of those are great ideas

I think that just means you can count on not getting his vote. If it ever is an option that is.

Great Idea! The base knife is inexpensive enough we could have a real nice and unique knife for a reasonable price.

I'm all in. Thanks for pulling this together guys!
I would like to see a pattern that differs from past years forum knives.
How about a 3 7/8"-ish teardrop jack with ebony handles and 1095 steel.
Maybe we could get a unique shield put on it to signify this special build.
