I really do enjoy this thread each year, and I really appreciate being a part of it with the nominations.

As far as voting, the short list is a who's who of some of my favorite makers. I had to vote for John White's D-guard--it screams "bowie" to me and the workmanship involved is unbelievable.

I initially picked 38 knives, then broke them down into half that. 5 of the 7 knives here were in the 19. I didn't get a vote for the 7 finalists in.

No matter how I tried to make decisions that qualified the 7 finalists in my mind, I could not. In the end, I realized I had spent way more time looking at the lines and detail of one knife... Don Hanson's. The grace, balance, and delicacy of the lines is just stunning... every aspect, damascus included, in a perfect pose. To me, it's simply art in a form.

I voted for Don Hanson III Ladder Damascus Bowie. Based solely on the photos it is the knife I felt I would most like to own. A subjective rather than a technical vote.

All of the knives are winners in my book. I had to give my vote for John's dogbone. As a maker I can really appreciate the work and skill involved in this knife. Besides it is just gorgeous. Roger thanks again and you are a lucky man to own this knife. Congratulations to all the finalists.

I'm a sucker for most of Dons knives, so I went with his ladder bowie. I love the knife. All are beautiful.

No one can make a knife 'flow' more than Don Hanson. Still, for this contest I had to give the nod to Russ Andrews' sub-hilt and deep colored stag.

This was not a hard decision for me at all.

Best Handle . . . check.

Best Damascus blade pattern . . . check.

Integral design . . . check.

I'm not saying it was my favorite Bowie of all of those shown this year (although it was close), but among these seven it was easily my favorite and if I could have any one of them, I would choose this one ten times out of ten . . .

Adam DesRosiers Damascus Integral Bowie.

Congrats to all who made the cut. I voted for #4 Jason Knight because of its pure fighting design and execution.

I picked the Gerhard Wieland Bowie as I just liked the overall flow of the knife and design

very interesting, I don't recall a knife so out of the box ever rising to the top in this event in past years.
What does it all mean....?

The dawn of a new age :)

Congrats to the lead horse

I just think it means it's a very appealing and well designed knife and a welcome change from the norm, even though I wouldn't say it's all that out of the box. It's not like it looks like a guitar or something.

The knife has excellent flow. The profile image accentuates it and the use of a black reflector extracts every bit of the cloud like temper line.

I have not handled any Wieland's knives and I would love to hear about their balance in the hand.

I noticed the available hunters on his website go for 800-900 Euros, so I expect this Bowie would have a price tag close the $3,000 range.

Anyone know?

I don't know much about this maker but I would like to congradulate the owner and the maker of this knife for rolling like a freight train thru this contest

Wow quite a showing against a stiff field

I wonder if Herr Wieland is aware of his impending victory? :D I have been checking out his stuff for a while and I even have a small full tang knife on the bench that is co-inspired by some of his smaller pieces and a couple that DHIII had done of late.
Joe, I have checked out his website on a number of occasions, and he appears to be another "ringer" like a few guys that we know in that he originally trained as a goldsmith and started smithing other stuff later in life. His website is wieland-der-schmied.de. Apparently, Richard Wagner wrote an opera about him. :D Actually, he just happens to have the same name and trade as a legendary character in German folklore, but it works nicely. He does a lot of hidden tang integrals (or half-integrals as they call them over there) in the hunter size range with carved wood handles.

He posted in the nomination thread and I see him listed as viewing this thread.

There is only one short straight line on this whole knife. It's the bevel at the ricasso. Maybe.

It's got more flow than the Danube, and the addition and combination of textures suggests that it wasn't quite finished. Right..... Like a male movie star with that everpresent two-day growth. Sexy.

I study that guard and spacer handle thing, and just think.... WOW!

I'm impressed he voted for my Hill Pearce knife. Justified! (I'm also glad it isn't a guitar shape, either. Props = Kevin! ;))
