I have to say the Wieland piece really jumped out at me in the nominee thread, as did the Tai Goo piece.

I didn't think it would take off like this, but I'm not surprised either. :)

Congrats to Gerhard Wieland - maker of the 2011 BladeForums Best Bowie! A remarkable accomplishment against quality competition. I haven't seen a runaway winner like this in some time - maybe ever. I find it surprising in the sense that the nomination voting was some of the closest ever, yet when it came to the finals Gerhard's knife jumped out to an immediate lead, which only increased over time. Well done!

Congrats also to the finalists, the nominees and to all who participate to make this an enjoyable way to wrap up the year.

Thanks also to Lorien for his help in tabulating and to Dave Crawford for sponsoring our plaque.

My 2012 bowie file is open and awaiting new entries. :)

Roger

Unfortunately I (we) cannot handle all of them in order to make the choice, so, from the pictures alone my thoughts are that while I would be proud to own any of them I would have to say the John White Bowie stands out to me as the most desirable.

Congrats Gerhard

Thank you Roger , Lorien and Dave

I am just stoked to have something to do with 2 knives that got in the running

Congratulations to Gerhard on a knife that truly deserves the term "Art," without losing anything of what we expect of the term "knife."

Congrats also to a group of makers I really admire, and am honored to be mentioned among.

Happy 2012 to all at Bladeforums,

John

hello together,

a happy new year to you all!

first of all let me say ´sorry´ for my silence until now-
we had a heavy up and down in our family-life here.
three days after a happy xmas together my father in law, healthy and active, died by an apoplectic stroke-
forty minutes, and he was gone.
two days later- at new years eve- was the 60th birthday of my wife and today I come from my father in law´s funeral.

but now to ´BEST BOWIE 2011´:
a big thanks to john w. for posting my knife, at that time I still hesitated to throw it into this ´champions-league-competition´.
... then my name appeared among the finalists,
I needed some second before I realised: six master- or journeysmiths and a newby in this pool.
I felt like in an unreal (but fantastic) dream.

I must confess:
from this moment my family had no more my sole attention... :-(

and then this result-
thank you all for this overwhelming number of votings for my ´FAT HOOK´!
this is a huge honor for a not so wellknown maker like me.
a competition here means more to me than a ´best of show´ in an exhibition!

a big compliment to you gentlemen here, this is a great community- sophisticated but still open-minded, always willing to share knowledge and experience with newcomers, frankly speaking to faults (my foto-skill or ´notskill´...:o...)
it´s a big thing to be a member of BF.

finally a ´thank you` to roger and lorien for their work with this competition, it is always the highlight of the year!

best regards
gerhard

Gerhard - so very sorry to hear of your loss - my condolences to you and to your family. That's a hard thing at any time, but particularly so over the holidays.

Congrats again on a fine piece and keep up the great work.

Roger

Well, if I wasn't convinced that this year's choosing wasn't 100% correct, after reading your post, Gerhard, I know it was now, and came at the absolute best time for you.

Bravo! Thanks for your words. Our warm thoughts go to you, and especially to your wife.

Jim

All the best Gerhard to you and your family! Congratulations on winning the final!

My condolences Gerhard on the loss of your father in law and congratulations on your beautiful Bowie winning "Best Bowie of 2011".

Gerhard, so sorry for your loss of your father-inlaw. On a more positive note Congratulations on the win. You nailed the design and execution of materials and heat treatment to an art form. I voted for the other guy but the majority appreciated your work and rightly so set the bar for what a "Bowie" is for us next year. That said, I humbly hand the torch to you. Congrats Gerhard Wieland

I love this place

Sorry to hear of the loss you and your family endured at what should be a time for celebration Gerhard.

That knife certainly is unique and beautiful.

Congratulations on such an impressive number of votes for your knife and it being the Bladeforums Best Bowie of 2011.

I hope to see more of your knives posted in 2012.

Regards,
Peter

Congratulations again to Gerhard for a convincing win over an accomplished field of makers.
I've contacted our winner via email and I'll work on getting him his plaque asap.
For those of you interested, here is a picture of the award being sent:
